Those plastic trays that you get fruit and veg in from the supermarket are great for storing stuff in cupboards like spices and sauce.

This thread is keeping me inspired even though I haven't done much for days!

I think at first I had so much to get rid of and now it's the more organising and renaming of stuff which I find more difficult. Food cupboards are looking pretty good but really need to do other kitchen cupboards. Got one of those annoying cupboards in the corner which you have to reach all the way into to reach things. I might try and re jig stuff so that nothing it actually in those stupid corners.

ItIsntJustAPhase · 12/01/2015 13:11

I have put picnic things in the back of one corner cupboard, and roasting tins and baking stuff in the back of the other. Both quite rarely used, but not so rare as to go on top of cupboards or elsewhere.

JKSLtd · 12/01/2015 13:17

ItIsnt - it's annoying isn't it? And yet he was such a good eater when young. All BLW. Yet somehow he's turned fussy.

Also - if you go out and leave it cooking aren't you ever worried? Esp if you've got a hob on? I'm no cook so simple ready on time stuff would be good. If the house hasn't burnt down in the meantime! Grin

Loula117 · 12/01/2015 13:23

Having been sorting the loft for a few days, I was dubious that we'd ever get rid of a box of my husband's (carried from house to house) containing 3 different Nintendo gameboys and about 40 games in total (still with boxes), plus their relevant chargers and accessories. He now has a tablet and a DSi, but even though I've got back into eBaying again recently, I think it would have been too daunting to photo and list everything that was up there, let alone pack and send it. ANYWAY, I was on a Facebook local group about to add some more toys, when I saw a 'wanted' post from a bloke who was after retro games consoles etc. I listed everything we had, including an old N64 a friend had given us years ago, and he came round that evening and gave us £110 cash for the lot! Box gone, money made, goddess KONMARIE moves in mysterious ways!

Now for the vintage clothes I have up there which no longer fit me since I lost a bit of weight. Keeping them is pointless as I don't want to put the weight back on and that's the only way they'd look good!

themummyonthebus · 12/01/2015 13:35

I actually had a pretty ruthless clear out of kitchen stuff when we moved a few months ago the only bit of the house that did but the pantry and some of the freezer are starting to get messy which implies to me that a) there's probably still too much stuff in there and b) I probably don't have the optimum way of storing stuff in there either.

Violetta and others, my spices are stored lying down in ikea spice trays in one of those wide, thin drawers that are in fashion at the moment. The main problem is that they don't all fit in there though, so I also have some in my corner cupboard (but have a rotary thing in there so easy to get at) AND in the pantry. Mostly those are bulky spices rather than powders like in my drawer. I think might try to group those two lots together in a plastic tray and put them all in my corner cupboard so at least they're all in one place.

For the pantry I bought some stackable plastic drawer units which I've mostly used for keeping my baking supplies in. They work quite well as they just pull out so you can get to what's at the back of them, or for those on a slightly higher shelf I just pull them out completely to have a root around. But again, i think there's too much in them generally.

Totally agree IQueen about your take on the minimalist blogs. No way I'm getting rid of my wok. I do have a range with a special wok ring on it though, and my wok isn't taking up too much space, AND it makes me smile so much when I do actually use it. But it's good to think about things in that way. I got rid of my bad machine years ago when I realised that because the loaf always got stuck to the inside as it baked I ended up just using it for the mixing and proving and then I put the loaf in the oven anyway. What an idiot! Started doing the kneading in the KitchenAid and sold my bad machine to my colleague (who by all accounts was over the moon with it).

Sorted the baby clothes I was thinking of keeping this morning and ended up sorting them, photographing then and I'll be posting them on my local fb selling pages later when I get on the computer Shock I have a box of mementos for the boys (that also needs going through) but apart from their coming home outfits it's not really the clothes that I really feel the most attachment too. I also threw away my breast pump that's been sitting on the side for a week to be washed up, after sitting under my desk for the last 6 months or so at work. I think I can accept now that I don't need to do any more pumping, and the poor thing was pretty knackered anyway. I gave it a long eulogy and a hug Blush then into the bin it went (I may have apologised for that as well). That inspired me though to go and get all the avent pots and bottles that were still hanging around and put them in the charity box but I've just thought the pots would make good paint pots for dc so I'm going to fish 5 or so out for that and put them with the art supplies.

I've also somehow managed to lose 0.3kg this week (so on track-ish for my 15 in 15 challenge - 15 kg in 2015) ShockGrin If anyone wants to join me I'm on mfp as Fenouille.

Violettatrump · 12/01/2015 13:37

Mango what's the 40 meals in 4 hours? Sounds interesting!

JKL we do tons of stews in our slow cooker but it's good for spag bol type dishes too.

Violettatrump · 12/01/2015 13:38

Could you borrow a slow cooker for a week?

Violettatrump · 12/01/2015 13:45

Mummyonthebus I need to loose about a stone. Don't know where to start with that really as I am a foodie!

Iqueen · 12/01/2015 14:00

Love my slow cooker (crock pot). Brilliant if you're out for the day, to get home to the smell of a delicious meal! And all for the cost of running a lightbulb for a few hours!

A bit of Googling will amaze you with what it can do. It's not just stews and casseroles: bread, cakes, puddings, roasts, porridge, baked potates/apples, almost anything!

Iqueen · 12/01/2015 14:05

Violettatrump Lose weight by cutting right down on cabohydrates - unless you are a manual road-builder, very few people need a lot these days. Maximum between 40-60g per day.

MangoBiscuit · 12/01/2015 14:10

Violetta I have a google and found this. There's also links on that page for 20 in 2 hours, or 7 in 1 hour. Sounds fab, but I need to clear out our chest freezer first. It's on the list of things to be kondo'd!

ItIsntJustAPhase · 12/01/2015 14:19

Wow, I am impressed with the 40 meals in 4 hours post. Amazing.

TimeGoesBy · 12/01/2015 14:23

Starface I use my slow cooker with a plug timer like this www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-438242-Plug-In-Mechanical-Timer/dp/B007OUQB48/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1421072004&sr=8-11&keywords=plug+timer (never linked before, hope worked) that I got from hardware shop. Works perfect and set to come on during day while in work. Amazing to come home to lovely home made dinner (must be how dh feels everyday Grin)
But... JKS I wouldn't bother getting one if you don't think you'll use it.... Know loads of people who use them exclusively to collect dust! Every family different....
All those minimalist lists are brilliant for inspiration but definitely think we should adapt them to suit ourselves.
Who suggested unfrugal? Love it and have a total girl crush on the blogger. Her wardrobe is amazing. Really brings home quality over quantity principle.
Kondoed electrically and got rid of loads. Have 8 Blush old mobile phones in a bag to send off to a charity that recycle them for a children's hospice. .. Happy, happy!

Pointlessfan · 12/01/2015 14:31

All this talk of slow cookers is interesting, I've been thinking about getting one too. That 40 meals in 4 hours link is amazing and really appeals to me as I'm going back to work soon.
My concern is that I am veggie, won't vegetables just be cooked to death in it?

Iqueen · 12/01/2015 14:32

MangoBiscuit kondo the stuff in the freezer, into the slow-cooker and freeze it in portions? Grin Waste not: want not!

Pointlessfan · 12/01/2015 14:47

www.buzzfeed.com/peggy/ways-to-organize-your-entire-life-with-ikea#.siG9Xv4G7X

Apologies if this link has been posted before but I just found it and thought I'd share. At last I have seen a way to store foil, cling film etc!!

didireallysaythat · 12/01/2015 15:00

There are a lot of blogs like 40 in 40. Some a little less ambitious !

lockie1983 · 12/01/2015 15:28

Kondoed my slow cooker before I knew what Kondoing was. Literally the only thing I've ever regretted getting rid of except that purple cape I once had. Sigh

40 in 4 hours has blown my mind. And I've now wasted an hour looking for a new slow cooker. There are some fairly reasonable ones out there - the one I used to have was big and heavy and a nightmare to get in and out of the cupboard. Think something smaller and easier to get out of the cupboard might bring me some joy ...

As would all of that food in my freezer. Wow.

Loving the Ikea hacks pointless we already have spice racks and bookcases here (just going to polish my halo a minute). Though we live in the tiniest of flats and have no under dresser / bed, hallway or bathroom wall space, which sort of defys everything that is Ikea !

MangoBiscuit · 12/01/2015 15:32

Iqueen I'm going to have to do something like that! It's full, it's huge, and it's full to the brim. Blush I wonder if I can split some of it into meals, bag it up a bit like 40 in 4, and keep it frozen, but easier to use. I reckon if the zombie apocalypse hit we'll be fed for at least 2 months, if I can just figure out what to make with everything!

PointlessI've seen that before, but I love it. Added 33 to my life last week, but with the bright yellow thick card ones.

lockie1983 · 12/01/2015 15:39

mango just let us know where you are incase that apocalypse hits. I'll pop round for dinner in an emergency.

Pointlessfan · 12/01/2015 15:41

I've just gone through a load of old folders that were in the loft. They were full of lesson plans etc from about 12 years ago so they are going in the recycling.
Does this mean I have finally started paperwork??
I've also been looking at pretty house things/storage ideas etc on Pinterest (like the Ikea link) which has motivated me to do more so we can then do some decorating and prettify the house. DD just waking up so I expect that's it for this afternoon!

lockie1983 · 12/01/2015 15:43

pointless I managed to do some paperwork sorting with the baby around (he's 18 months so might have to stop calling him that soon); I just chucked loads of paper (that I was going to recycle) on the floor and he happily rolled around in it / ripped it / put crayon all over it.

Bought me about half an hour. That should be it all done then, shouldn't it??? Wink

Starface · 12/01/2015 16:27

JKS I would put the slow cooker pot on the hob just to do the beginning bit if it is a suitable pot, then stick it on the slow cooker which is run from a plug (not v dangerous when leaving house). Atm I brown meat in another pan then put it in the slow cooker. This creates extra washing up Shock.

Great tip about wall plug. 40 in 4 has also blown my mind. Not enough freezer space here I suspect, but still, once kondoing is done it is worth a good think...

The mandolin was good so it stays. Pressure cooker also had its first trial. It needs more experimentation. I suspect kondoing the kitchen will be hard for me...

Still, things are out to advert on gumtree and ebay. Two bin bags and a sports bag of DH stuff to chazzer. Joy bringing tops to fill gaps identified whilst MKing purchased. Plus a jumper not purchased, as wanted to consider, but may return to purchase fri. Whoop whoop. Happy days.

Violettatrump · 12/01/2015 17:24

Wow just looked at the 4 hours recipe website. It's just turned my idea of cooking on its head!! I think I might do a mid way thing initially - so when preparing a meal, prepare enough for 2 meals and store the second meal raw and frozen. I'd like to do the whole shebang but I'm not quite ready yet.

Good point about the carbs iqueen. I'll start looking at what carbs I have thanks.

Really enjoying all the links and suggestions.

Today I've kondoed the fridge freezer. Chucked out one tesco bag of odds and ends from the fridge and two from the freezer!! Blush

I also went through the kitchen cupboards and charity shopped the steamer pans, two well used pans, one wok, two unjoyful wine glasses and two unjoyful tumblers. I also binned three chipped mugs. Very pleased with this!

HermioneGrangerHair · 12/01/2015 17:36

iqueen thanks for the moral support. Been feeling a bit demotivated the last couple of days... Mainly because there are piles of books all over the study, I've no solid plan for moving them, and still have 2/3 of the bookcases to do.

If I find any time/energy after work this week, I might start on a much smaller kondo project... Probably cleaning supplies. We've got two big storage boxes under the kitchen sink full of manky scrubbing brushes, rusty Brillo pads and shoe polish. I don't know when any of us last polished shoes! Confused
