As in on display in the bathroom?

We're in a 'do up' house and the 'doing up' is taking a lot longer than planned! After living in a total mess for 4+ years the bathroom is nearly done and I'm sick to the back teeth of living in crap and I'm craving clutter free.

Our bathroom is quite big but there's no obvious place for a cupboard.

Eventually there'll be one on the landing right outside the bathroom door so everything will go in there.

Sorry - I'm waffling but I'm lying in the bath looking at the shower gel / soaps etc and they're getting on my nerves. they don't match my bathroom

No 2nd toilet until the year after next at least when downstairs gets
started.

Do you have your Head and Shoulders out on 'display' or do you put your toiletries away? ?

This is the nice thing about having your own home. You can set it up to suit yourself. I grew up at boarding school so being able to leave bottles in the bathroom, not a washbag, is my idea of luxury! It's all about how it makes YOU feel Vivacia - our associations are so different!

I am surprised at the number of people keeping toasters in cupboards though. It would neverocvur to me to put away a kettle, toaster or microwave.

OP if you are till reading, do you have space for a mirror above the sink? If so could you put up a mirrored cabinet instead? We had an ikea one for years, discontinued now but similar to this www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/30270769/ or you can get ones with lights. They are designed to take the place of a mirror but they hold an amazing amount. I'd really recommend.

In my defence, I'm not the one telling people they are Doing Bathrooms Wrong or that they are weird or mocking them.

TheHappinessTrap · 11/12/2014 13:27

When my bathroom was also the only bathroom I kept it clutter free. One of the nicest things about moving was to be able to have a messy bathroom!

Vivacia · 11/12/2014 13:29

But I certainly appreciate the kind words.

I'm still here - amazed at the different views on this totally minor but takes over my head when I'm meant to be relaxing in the bath thing!

I'm not keen on over the sink cupboards or units under the sink.

Dp finally put the shelves up in th ebathroom - so they now each have towels stacked on one end and a wicker box (ds' bath toys in one, new unopened shampoo etc in the other)

Still nowhere to put the bleach etc - I want a basket tall enough for bleach and cleaning stuff but with a lid. We have space on the floor and it's a fairly big bathroom - just weirdly no where for a proper cupboard.

I think if I can get a basket I'm happy enough with for the bleach etc and maybe some pump dispensers (not clear - that'd defeat the purpose as my shampoo etc is the 'wrong' colour) I'd be happy enough until we can get the landing done and a cupboard in the alcove for long term.

I have 'a rule' about not opening a new bottle of shampoo/conditioner until the old one is used. I grew up in a house with dozens of half used bottles of this that and the other sitting about and hence I am borderline obsessive about it.

That doesn't sound obsessive, that sounds like normal good sense. Why would you open a new bottle of anything if you already have a bottle of that exact same stuff open?

ClaudiaNaughton · 11/12/2014 21:22

Probably not exact same stuff but a new "miracle" shampoo which could not be resisted (until next time.)

treaclesoda · 12/12/2014 17:28

Trills you would think it is normal good sense wouldn't you? Grin But my dear mum is the queen of opening about five bottles of shampoo that are fairly similar, all at the same time. It drives me demented!

Lelivre · 12/12/2014 22:42

I can't bear loads of products out, it's messy and makes cleaning properly a right pain. We had a massive cabinet at out last place so nothing needed to be out

In our new one the bathroom has limited storage, so I've pared down on the products to the absolute essentials. I've used up or binned products that are not the favourites and I don't buy multiples anymore unless it's Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner as dd and I love that. And yes we put away shampoo and conditioner and toys after every use. But I like this idea of 3 smart dispensers, maybe when the kids are older as they would decant it at bath time.

In any case...Apart from personal preference my toddler would paint the walls and eat anything left out so the stuff has to be out of sight and reach.

skinoncustard · 12/12/2014 23:04

Only things on show are toilet roll, towel and soap. Can't stand 'stuff' all over the place. Cupboard in the bathroom so no big deal to get t/brush, paste etc as required. Much easier to keep clean , just a wipe over, nothing to move or get damp and grotty.
