do you have your shampoo etc 'out'?

As in on display in the bathroom?

We're in a 'do up' house and the 'doing up' is taking a lot longer than planned! After living in a total mess for 4+ years the bathroom is nearly done and I'm sick to the back teeth of living in crap and I'm craving clutter free.

Our bathroom is quite big but there's no obvious place for a cupboard.

Eventually there'll be one on the landing right outside the bathroom door so everything will go in there.

Sorry - I'm waffling but I'm lying in the bath looking at the shower gel / soaps etc and they're getting on my nerves. they don't match my bathroom

No 2nd toilet until the year after next at least when downstairs gets
started.

Do you have your Head and Shoulders out on 'display' or do you put your toiletries away? ?

I understand wanting the bathroom clutter free for easy cleaning. I achieve that by everyone using the same products. "Out" in our bathroom, there is one toothpaste, one shampoo, one shower gel and the hand soap. I couldn't stand a windowsill full of hundreds of half used (dusty) bottles, but I can't see them ever being put away if they were allowed in either.

Things like make-up, deodorant and moisturiser are dealt with in bedrooms.

FollowTheStarship · 08/12/2014 10:43

We actually have a tiny bathroom with very little storage space, so it is all out – though I try to keep on top of clutter and dust and make sure old stuff gets thrown out.

I do like it to look nice and I'm influenced by packaging when I buy shampoo etc. It's shallow but I'll choose colours that "go" and reject designs I don't like. Not to show off, just because it makes me happy.

I also LOVE other people's bathrooms when they have everything on display and you can check it out when you go to the toilet. I wouldn't rummage through a cupboard, so I appreciate being able to nose freely. "Oooh, she uses Aveda, schmancy! Hmm, I wouldn't have thought he was a Chanel Egoiste type" Blush

So you're doing nosy people a fine service by having it all "out" :)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 08/12/2014 10:48

Our stuff is all out on the window sill above the sink, which also runs along the bottom of the bath - so no danger of anything being spat on!

I get around the cleaning/dust issue by

  1. having a cleaner
  1. whenever I use a bottle it gets a quick dunk under the shower before it goes back on the window sill, keeps the dust to a minimum.

Vivacia don't be upset, we all have our 'things' that we do differently to the majority of the world :)

Alwaysinahurrynow · 08/12/2014 10:52

I bought a painted Apple crate to fit on top of the boxed in cistern which contains all shampoo etc. Rest is hidden in a cupboard.

TranquilityofSolitude · 08/12/2014 10:56

We have 3 bottles out in the shower and hand wash on the basin but everything else is out of sight.

I remember a thread like this before and someone linked to these wall-mounted dispensers They look great but they're rather expensive.

TranquilityofSolitude · 08/12/2014 10:58

I should say, my DDs' bathroom is the opposite - shampoo/conditioner bottles everywhere, usually with only a tiny amount in each because they were impatient to start the new one before they finished the first one... I try not to go in there because it makes me angry. Last time I ventured in I picked up 7 empty toilet roll tubes.

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 11:39

aw Vivacia - I am sorry.

NoelleHawthorne · 08/12/2014 11:40

i hide my pile cream

samesizetoes · 08/12/2014 12:37

Last time I used to keep it all hidden away I kept buying more and more stuff because I couldn't remember what I did or didn't have. 15 bottles of conditioner and 29 tubes of toothpaste later I got sick of it.

1 bar of soap on the sink. 1 tube of toothpaste on the shelf by the mirror. 1 bottle of shampoo and conditioner on the corner of the bath and 1 bottle of shower gel in the shower. Everyone's own deodorant and toiletries live on their dresser in their rooms.

Mitchymatchy · 08/12/2014 16:41

I think this is something that's changed a lot over the years. Our first 2 houses had no cupboards at all and we didn't think anything of it.

We have shampoo etc out in a wire basket thing over the bath. Toothbrushes etc are out too - the only time I've ever put them in a cupboard was when we were selling the house, and DH took them out again because he thought it looked weird without!

Vivacia I do get the tug of a sparkly clean white bathroom, but to me a toothbrush or perfectly clean bottle of shampoo is in keeping with that. Plus don't your damp toothbrushes, bath puffs etc fester horribly in a cupboard?

hissingcat · 08/12/2014 21:03

Another one here who doesn't keep anything out except a hand soap next to the sink.
everything else is either in washbags outside bathroom or cupboards in bathroom and is taken our when needed then dried and put away afterwards. so much easier to keep the bathroom clean.

PoinsettiaGordino · 08/12/2014 21:08

stuff we use daily (toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, shampoo, conditioner) are out. everything else away. i would hate to have a bathroom any more cluttered than that

but we don't have children and dp and i use the same shampoo so it's relatively easy to keep that to a minimum

Bakeoffcakes · 08/12/2014 21:11

We have this cupboard in our bathroom, I have baskets on the shelves and keep "things" in there.

www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-st-ives-towel-cupboard/p230750244

I do keep out shower gel, toothbrushes and hand soap.

Mintyy · 08/12/2014 21:15

Yes, we have loads of bathroom stuff "on display" because we use it every day and it would be a total and utter pita to get it out of a cupboard and put it away every time it gets used.

Also, we don't live in a magazine shoot/show home/film set.

And I'm fine with that.

mausmaus · 08/12/2014 21:15

well we have the windowsill for the various bottles but only take what we need for shower/bath. we are still looking for a naice telescope shelf for an akward corner where we want to hide the bottles.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 08/12/2014 21:18

We do at the moment because I stupidly bought gigantic shampoo and conditioner that doesnt fit in the cupboard. When I pour it down the drain use it all up everything will be in the cupboard again.

Our bathroom growing up was vile Sad it's very important to me to have a clean and tidy bathroom now.

mydaftlass · 08/12/2014 21:31

Everything that is used at least once a week is out, yes. I don't mind.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2014 21:38

I put everything in my dressing table. I like things tidy.

I also put my toaster in a cupboard because it is old, tatty & doesn't go with my kitchen. I can't afford to replace it so I hide it.

The fucker won't die either. It'll outlive me.

HupTwoThreeFour · 08/12/2014 23:22

Our dispensers are something like this: m.ebay.co.uk/itm/190552906064?_mwBanner=1

TheNumberfaker · 08/12/2014 23:37

One shampoo/ conditioner/ shower gel out in each bathroom. Drives me potty when I go to the inlaws and they have about 20 half used bottles of this and that out.

minipie · 08/12/2014 23:46

we only have stuff we use daily "out", but somehow that still ends up being quite a lot even though we're both pretty minimalist on the product front.

shower has:
shampoo
conditioner
soap
face wash

basin has:
face wipes
toothbrushes x3, toothpaste x2 (adult and toddler)
soap
contact lens fluid and case
shaving foam

everything else is in cupboards or in the bedroom. Can't imagine doing the daily washbag thing but each to their own!

JapaneseMargaret · 09/12/2014 04:10

Vivacia, you're not in the wrong at all, in the context of your childhood, that makes perfect sense.

Vivacia · 09/12/2014 06:53

Thanks Margaret, it sometimes means I'm missing that baseline of what is normal.

Yes, Mitchy, obviously we are raising our family in one mouldy, festering mess.

Bunbaker · 09/12/2014 06:58

"No WAY! You use wash bags at home?
That's quite weird!"

Does this poster live in a hotel?

EthelCardew · 09/12/2014 11:28

I'd really like to streamline my bathroom stuffs. It's going to be my first project of 2015.

The cluttered look of it drives me mad and the dust, oh the dust! It seems to land after every shower and I just can't keep up with it. We all have sensitive skin so we don't even use very much and I don't wear much make up because of it either but there's still stuff EVERYWHERE!

We live in a large flat but there's not much storage or room for freestanding units, especially in the bathroom. DH likes all this daily stuff out, I'd rather hide it but I'm not forcing him to put his stuff away. We also have a basket of bath toys and a large inflatable bath for DD as she hates the shower.

A wash bag taken in every time is something I'd definitely do if everyone else in the family would too!
