As in on display in the bathroom?

We're in a 'do up' house and the 'doing up' is taking a lot longer than planned! After living in a total mess for 4+ years the bathroom is nearly done and I'm sick to the back teeth of living in crap and I'm craving clutter free.

Our bathroom is quite big but there's no obvious place for a cupboard.

Eventually there'll be one on the landing right outside the bathroom door so everything will go in there.

Sorry - I'm waffling but I'm lying in the bath looking at the shower gel / soaps etc and they're getting on my nerves. they don't match my bathroom

No 2nd toilet until the year after next at least when downstairs gets
started.

Do you have your Head and Shoulders out on 'display' or do you put your toiletries away? ?

Vivacia I am the opposite, I lived in a spotless "show home" sort of house growing up and I am so untidy! I would love a sparkling white clean bathroom now (after I rebelled by being messy in my student days) but I just can't seem to train myself to be neat and tidy. I think the wash bag system you have at home sounds great! Nothing is weird it's just different!

Vivacia · 09/12/2014 12:09

I think the wash bag or caddy thing started when every bath time involved a crate of toys. Hot bubble baths with the lights turned off were one of my treats when the children were little and I couldn't relax surrounded by plastic bottles, jugs and plastic marine life.

Vivacia · 09/12/2014 12:10

I wasn't in the mood yesterday, but if we had a toaster it would be kept in a cupboard. We don't, we use the grill instead because it means I don't have to own a toaster, but the kettle and microwave live in cupboards.

FollowTheStarship · 09/12/2014 12:13

So true. I hate it when you're drifting off in your dreamy candle/bubble bath paradise then think "wtf is that" and there's a plastic dolphin jabbing into your arse.

We have one of those posho claw-footed freestanding baths (ooh get me, though actually it wasn't me but the previous owner, who seemingly failed to notice the bathroom is minuscule!) so I have a plastic tray thing for all the toys that I shove under/behind the bath.

chipsandpeas · 09/12/2014 12:36

regular stuff gets left out on a day to day basis and only put away into the set of drawers i have when people are visiting - the drawers also have the stuff i use once a week etc

chipsandpeas · 09/12/2014 12:36

oh i should add i only put stuff away when people visiting so they dont see the amount of shite i use ie face packs etc not cos i like the miminal look

MorrisZapp · 09/12/2014 12:43

I've got a wire 'shopping basket' thingy with all shampoos etc in it. Easy to lift the whole lot for cleaning under. Also discourages bathroom clutter as it's strictly one in, one out. I keep all my 'waiting in the wings' products in the kitchen cupboard.

VenusRising · 09/12/2014 12:51

We have a huge family bathroom, and the people using it have various skins.
Psoriasis, excema, dry skin, acne, sensitive, and one DC with normal skin.

We all have multiple bottles as we all have to chop and change our products each day.
The bathroom is stuffed to the rafters with various unguents, lotions, potions, masks, cremes, ointments, gels, soaps, scrubs, muds, salts, shampoos, conditioners.
We all have colour coded towels hanging also. It's a jungle in there!

Bunbaker · 09/12/2014 16:06

"but the kettle and microwave live in cupboards."

Surely not.

I keep the toaster in a cupboard because it doesn't get used all the time, but the kettle does. My microwave is too big to go in a cupboard.

Artandco · 09/12/2014 16:42

Bunbaker - our microwave is built in so not on the side, and we don't own a kettle. Toaster lives in cupboard as rarely used ( should just use grill really if needed and get rid of toaster tbh)

NoelleHawthorne · 09/12/2014 17:17

The kettle in a cupboard.
What is out at yours V?

Vivacia · 09/12/2014 18:03

We don't really use the kettle or microwave.

Er, there's the chopping board and that's it.

NoelleHawthorne · 09/12/2014 18:23

In other rooms though? Plants? Ornaments?

TwiggyHeart · 09/12/2014 18:50

We have a hole in wall type shelf so daily use stuff is out but tucked away. Everything else in a cupboard under the sink (from ikea and it's great). The only other out stuff is bath toys in a net and even this drives me a bit mental

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 09/12/2014 18:58

I'm always a bit astonished at kitchen appliances living in cupboards, surely it is then the most massive hassle to get them out and use them?

My kitchen surfaces have toaster, coffee machine, chopping boards, bread bin, microwave with fruit bowl on top, kettle, huge spice rack, big pot of utensils, letter holder stuffed with post and other paperwork.

LumionaMoonsplash · 09/12/2014 19:07

We only have shower gel & shampoo/ conditioner out in the shower. Hand wash at sink, everything else in cupboards. Trying to get this house a bit more clutter free.

JapaneseMargaret · 09/12/2014 19:12

Only the kettle and a bowl of fruit is out at ours, all the other things are on shelves in a walk-in pantry.

Bunbaker · 09/12/2014 19:12

If I had all that lot out in my kitchen Alibaba I wouldn't have any work surface left. I keep the microwave, food processor, food mixer and kettle out, but I don't have a big kitchen. Oh, and I have a TV as well.

Artandco · 09/12/2014 19:16

Alibaba - ''My kitchen surfaces have toaster, ( in cupboard use rarely)
coffee machine, ( don't own as don't drink coffee)
chopping boards, ( in drawer)
bread bin, ( don't own, not big bread eaters, little bit in freezer)
microwave with fruit bowl on top, (microwave built in, fruit in bowl on dining table)
kettle, ( don't own one)
huge spice rack, ( screwed inside cupboard door)
big pot of utensils, (in drawer)
letter holder stuffed with post and other paperwork.( don't get bills etc in post as digital. All school stuff digital also)

On my kitchen side right now is a Christmas poinsettia plant, and bottle of hand wash near sink. That's all. Whole house is similar

wordgirl · 09/12/2014 19:24

How can anyone not have a kettle? Do you have one of those fancy hot water taps?

Bunbaker · 09/12/2014 19:34

They don't drink hot drinks and never offer them to guests?

Artandco · 09/12/2014 20:14

We rarely drink hot drinks. For hot milk/ hot chocolate we would just use microwave or milk pan on stove.

We boil water in milk pan should someone want mint tea or guests regular. But this is once every 6 weeks or so, so wouldn't warrant a kettle taking up space and no used majority of the time.

Most of our guests are in the evening. Hence we have a wine fridge!

Vivacia · 09/12/2014 20:20

They don't drink hot drinks and never offer them to guests?

They don't drink hot drinks and yet they still manage the cumbersome task of lifting the kettle out of the cupboard in order to boil up some water for their guests.

Trills · 09/12/2014 20:29

Things in use - yes.

Spares or things for special occasions - in a cupboard.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 09/12/2014 20:34

Out here. Anything needed regularly in the shower or bath is out, I'd rather move it once a week to clean the shelves than have to put it all away and get it all out again every day. Toothbrush (electric) and toothpaste all kept on the counter too, as well as soap by the basin.

I'm not really into minimalist home style, cosy clutter is a better description of our house - it's small and somewhat lacking in cupboard space. We have lots of stuff on the kitchen counters too, all used daily.
