DH work shirts - who irons them? or do you make him buy non-iron ones?

Non-iron ones here. Can't think of any reason not to but maybe you disagree?

If I haven't done the ironing and they are in a pile, dh does it in the morning as he needs it. If I stand and do a huge pile of ironing then I do it.

Some weeks I do them all and hang them up. Some weeks he ends up doing them every morning! Poor dh!

CountessDracula · 05/10/2006 12:35

DH does his own but my mum often does 20 for him if she is staying

You should see the amout of washing he does just before she comes up

Occasionally I do them if I am feeling kind as it takes me 20 mins to do 5 and him about an hour He NEVER asks me though

gigglinggoblin · 05/10/2006 12:40

i once got told by a guy that he deliberately pulled the wire out of the hoover while using it so his wife would ban him from hoovering again. am v suspicious of blokes being rubbish at simple tasks such as ironing shirts now.

we never iron anything here except tshirt transfers and hemming web, but then dp doesnt wear shirts to work so not a problem

PandaG · 05/10/2006 12:50

I did DH's when we were first married, he had started work and I had another week of being at home before my course started - he complained that I had ironed a crease down the sleeve, so stuff that I thought, and he did his thereon in. 13 years later I do iron the odd one of his if it is in the ironing pile, and do iron his casual clothes if I think they need it (he never does), and he accepts that if I do it it has a crease down the sleeve , and is appreciative of me bothering!

Bozza · 05/10/2006 12:52

I must confess I did all the ironing before DS was born so it is one of DH's concessions to fatherhood that he does maybe a third of it.

oliveoil · 05/10/2006 12:54

I don't iron anything in this house.

Hung up to dry and then put on hangers. Girls stuff is tiny and I worry not if there is the odd crease on a 2 year old's t-shirt.

The odd thing that needs ironing, gets done when it needs wearing.

fennel · 05/10/2006 12:57

DP buys his shirts, washes them and doesn't iron them. I guess they're non-iron ones. I can't imagine a life where I had any interest whatsoever in the state of his work shirts.

FIMBOnABroomstick · 05/10/2006 12:58

I iron dh a shirt every night. I can't iron all in one go as they would get creased in the wardrobe. Dh will iron at the weekend whilst I am in the shower.

beckybraAAARGHstraps · 05/10/2006 13:01

Same as OO. We tend to iron for occasions when dh needs a tie: weddings, funerals, that sort of thing.

Glassofslime · 05/10/2006 13:01

I do most of it, dh works in a casually dressed office so they aren't suit shirts in fact mostly linen so a nightmare to iron - I wish he'd go for non iron ones, but there's no way. If I get behind on the ironing he'll happilly help out, but he does work v long hours so I do have more time.

bossykate · 05/10/2006 13:03

i have a lovely cleaner who does the ironing but before that dh did his own and i did mine and the children's.

foxtrottingtotransylvania · 05/10/2006 13:14

PandaG i thought my Dh was the only man who didn't want a crease in his sleeves. I guess that's one of the reasons he used to take so long to iron, that and the fact that he used to have the thick cotton ones AND wear cufflinks too. He will still trot this style out for a special occasion but for everyday he seems to be quite happy with my non-iron tumble dry approach (with built in sleeve creases .

MB did you do something unforgiveable to achieve such an honour?

OP posts:
Skribble · 05/10/2006 13:19

Dh does his own stuff , but somehow I have to do mine plus the kids, and wash everyones. Never see him thinking Oh I will put on a darks wash . Don't get me started.

lorina · 05/10/2006 13:23

I happily do all Dh's ironing.

Can you reallly get away with non-iron shirts ? I have had non-iron school uniform for M&s and found that still needed a quick once over.

Skribble · 05/10/2006 13:26

"happily", why happily?

lemonaid · 05/10/2006 13:28

DH does all his own ironing and almost all of mine as well (although I tend to have things that don't need ironing, so that's normally only a couple of things). I am very bad at ironing. Occasionally (a couple of times a year) I will do his shirts, but it takes me literally about four times as long as it takes him.

Gobbledispook · 05/10/2006 13:36

lorina - I never iron ds1's school shirts. I tumble dry them and take them out while still hot and they don't need ironing.

Mind you they are small - age 4 ones - so maybe when they are bigger

lorina · 05/10/2006 13:49

because I love him and have more free time than him

Good tip about the tumble dryer, I will try that on the school shirts next week !

Mumpbump · 05/10/2006 14:02

I have never done anything horrible to them because I have never been allowed to iron them... And they have to go in a separate wash from everything else!! Bespoke shirts, so he's very protective

foxinsocks · 05/10/2006 14:05

dh sorts himself out - what that normally means is a huge black sack of shirts carted off to the dry cleaners to be ironed once every 2 weeks. I try to ignore him if he ever moans about not having any shirts ready for work - he knows where the iron is and how to use it!

nolastar · 05/10/2006 14:06

We both work full time...and seeing as I still do the majority of the thinking and doing in the house..I leave the shirts to him to do before he leaves for work in the morning..It sort of redresses the balance a little .I would rather empty the dishwasher,hoover,do maths homework..in fact anything than iron shirts( unless of course he's been a good boy the night before and then I might surprise him with a nice crisp shirt}

merryberry · 05/10/2006 15:04

dry cleaners for us. but he only needs three a week, the way he works. both of us loathe the fiddliness of shirts especially. nanny does rest of ironing, but many things we just hang dry. i love autumn cos all the clothes are woolly or have added lycra, not like cotton summer things.
