DH work shirts - who irons them? or do you make him buy non-iron ones?

Non-iron ones here. Can't think of any reason not to but maybe you disagree?

OP posts:

when we both worked dh did his own. When I had dd I (clearly before actually having her) thought as I'd be at home I'd have time to do them. Fast forward to dd being 20 months and now I do any easy ones when I do dd's stuff (and the few bits I have) and any difficult ones get sent to the ironing shop.

But dh does insist on double cuff thick cotton expensive ones which I assure him I cannot possibly do justice to !

Olihan · 04/10/2006 22:42

Same as kama, but mainly because he never remembers to put them into wash until last thing sunday night so they have to hang up and dry for the morning. I have offered to wash and iron them for him IF and WHEN he puts them in the sodding laundry basket. I spend enough of my day picking up the dc's clothes that are shed around the house without having to do his as well.

Ooh, found a touchy spot there!!!

hairymclary · 04/10/2006 22:49

hello wheelybug

mummydear · 04/10/2006 22:51

Non iron shirts in our house. Sometimes they do need a quick going over so if I am in a good mood I will do it , but as a SAHM I have better things to do than ironing

eidsvold · 04/10/2006 22:54

if I am doing the family ironing - I will iron them - if not - he does.

Rhubarb · 04/10/2006 22:56

The title got me going there - it's as if the OP assumes that his clothes are bought by the little wifey!

I never iron, dh does his own and most of the time he buys his own clothes too. He also loads the washing machine and hangs out the clothes when he's free.

MrsSpoon · 04/10/2006 22:56

I iron them all, even the non-iron ones.

SamhainWitch · 04/10/2006 23:02

For 18 years DH has believed that I am crap at ironing and insists on doing his own.

I am not about to disillusion him.

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 05/10/2006 09:24

DH doesn't believe non-iron or tumbledry&hang is good enough and I disagree so I refuse to iron them. FGS he has an hour's drive to work and wears a jumper in the winter - his shirts must look positively scrumpled when he gets to work!
Very few of my clothes need ironing, I just hang them carefully to dry and sneak the occasional thing into DH's ironing pile.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 05/10/2006 09:26

ironing??? whats that??? Oh yeah, its what DH does one night every 2 weeks!!!

Pruhoohooohoooooni · 05/10/2006 09:27

What edam said, almost word for word, with a little bit of MI thrown in for good measure.

I am a sahm and if I had to do the ironing - any ironing - I think I might just lose the plot somewhat.

moaningpaper · 05/10/2006 09:30

DH does all the ironing

and buys his own clothes

I also INSIST that he dresses himself every morning because it does my back in getting his pants over his ankles etc.

gladbag · 05/10/2006 09:32

Dh irons his own, although I usually do his casual stuff (the small amounts that actually get ironed, that is)

IdrisTheDragon · 05/10/2006 09:33

If DH needs a shirt ironing, he irons it .

Bozza · 05/10/2006 09:38

TBH I find this "does his own" thing weird. I do the ironing while Coronation Street is on - working from the top of the pile down so it will include some of my clothes, some of his and some of the kids. Whatever is left I expect him to do. On Monday when I went out he did the lot. Last night I did the lot. It happened to include one work shirt along with various other items.

Pruhoohooohoooooni · 05/10/2006 09:39

Well we do so little ironing that dh's shirts would make up the bulk of it - hypothetically - so it would be me giving up my relaxing evening whilst he sat around.

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 05/10/2006 10:00

I don't get the whole family ironing thing, why do kids need their clothes ironed? They can definitely be just hung to dry nicely. If you have to keep them in a pile until you're ready to iron them, surely you need absolutely loads of clothes or you're constantly chasing your tail. Our clean clothes are usually in a pile waiting to be put away but they are ready to wear so can be grabbed if needed sooner.
I think people with high ironing standards should not be allowed to complain about the amount of ironing they have to do - they do it to themselves

Loshad · 05/10/2006 10:10

Dh irons his shirts, in the morning before work, unless my mother comes to visit then she irons the entire basket full of them for him
Agree bobd don't iron most of the childrens' clothes at all.

CheesyFeetcomingtoGETyou · 05/10/2006 10:18

I iron dh's shirts, and everything else. I'm better at it and much quicker.

He will clean bathroom or similar whilst I am ironing.

Fair swap, imo

SSSandy · 05/10/2006 10:19

Take them to a laundrette that just irons them, wash them at home.

Bozza · 05/10/2006 10:24

I hardly see how the ironing of 5 shirts is giving up your evening - it would take 1/2 hour max. We iron 2/3 times a week and never run out of clothes - especially now that DS has teflon coated school trousers that I can just sponge down instead of washing every day.

In fact in DD's case it means that all the clothes fit in the wardrobe if she has a few on the ironing pile. She is the recipient of handmedowns from the daughter of a compulsive shopper. What 2yo needs 7 pairs of jeans, 5 pairs of cords, 3 pairs of combats, plus other trousers, skirts and dresses?

i've started sending them to be washed and ironed i hate it so much

they are immaculate now

Pruhoohooohoooooni · 05/10/2006 12:31

THis is how my evening would go Bozza:

8.30 remember I have to iron dh's shirts
9.00 quietly seethe as i get out the ironing board, hoping he'll jump up and say "Don't worry, P, they're my shirts, why don't I do them?"
10.00 still be labouring away, because I am an ironing perfectionist, no sleeve creases here, whilst he sits on his arse

It just wouldn't work but I am happy for those who\ve found a way to do it and not mind.

NOMurDErousPLUME · 05/10/2006 12:33

I iron them.

DH can iron to a fashion but it takes him 20+ minutes to do one shirt and he makes such a bloody fuss that it is less painful for me to whizz the iron over them.

We do buy non-iron or 'easy iron', but they still need a light run over, ime.
