Come fold your loved clothes, and feel the spark of joy in every object you own (or thereabouts).

I'm not making much progress either everywhere a mess still but the clothes have stayed folded....I never thought that would happen but I guess it would be too much hassle to start jamming stuff in the small gaps without folding properly, as long as the drawer is pretty full.

Have started to use up random bars of soap instead of buying more shower gel which I'm pleased with. All toiletries are in the right place and it makes it soooo much easier to use up all the random crap and not buy pointless multiples. The category thing really is the KEY. So simple but really effective I can't believe I never did it before, seems so obvious. Am excited about making a designated stationary box soon Grin

ProveMeWrong · 12/11/2014 23:05

My clothes are staying nice and I'm enjoying picking them more in the morning, and even washing and folding them I feel they are happier now I have more pride for them Blush but I do think I need to be a little more ruthless on my definition of joy and clothes. I think my problem is for so long I have let my mum buy me things and accepted them that I have lost my sense of my own style and so I end up keeping things. I'm going to get a bit tougher I think so I have the ability to buy something that really brings me a lot of joy now and again.

Mum4Fergus · 13/11/2014 10:06

Morning all Smile I can't afford to buy the book at the moment ... can anyone help me out with an idea of where to start with this?!

bookwormbeagle · 13/11/2014 10:39

Hi mum4 I've got the kindle version and have just tried to find the official order (damn it's so much easier to flick thru a book!).

Start with clothes:
Tops
Bottoms
Clothes for hanging
Socks
Underwear
Handbags
Scarves, belts etc
Swimwear type stuff
Shoes

Then books, paperwork and bills etc.

Then Komono (miscellaneous items)
CD, DVD collections
Skin care
Makeup
Accessories
Valuables (passports etc)
Electrical equipment, wires, leads, phones etc
Household equipment
Household supplies

Then you move onto sentimental stuff like photos, old keepsakes etc.

Helpful hints - sort by category not room/area, so gather all your tops together then you can easily see if you've got too many white shirts etc. any that don't bring you joy thank them and charity shop bin or whatever.

Hope that helps to get you started. Smile

Book that was nicely listedSmile. Mum4 Idon't have the book either and I cant download it where I live ,but it has not stopped me from sorting out and getting rid of lots ( I thought I was quite ruthless before but loads more has left the house. My top tip would be to get rid of the things that you have decided that you don't love as soon as you can. I put the bags if clothes in the car as soon as they were done. You might decide to go back and visit different categories again along the way. It does take time to go through every category but it is worth it.

Mum4Fergus · 13/11/2014 12:11

Thanks Bookworm Smile I get the idea now. Ok, was due to deep clean DS room today so will do his clothes at same time...let see how that goes for starters!!

bookwormbeagle · 13/11/2014 12:33

Good luck!

I forgot to mention the folding part of KonMarie! It's supposed to take up less room in your drawers and you can see easily what you've got (I haven't got round to doing this part yet).

There are youtube videos on the proper method of folding.

Mum4Fergus · 13/11/2014 13:37

Eeek! Made a start on nighttime clothing of DS and I...gathered everything into the one spot, then sat in disbelief!! I have 4 pairs of PJs, 2 dressing gowns and 3 nightshirts!! DS has 2 dressing gowns and 9, yes 9, pairs of PJs!!!

I've trimmed and bagged for either charity or bin. I now have 1 dressing gown each,2 pairs PJs for me and 3 for DS...

This might be a long haul for me Confused

Ikea expedit box shelves are now kallax for a previous poster.

homeaway · 13/11/2014 17:22

So I've been sorting out the drawers at work (new temporary job). Previous employee had put stuff all over the space and they were just sliding around in the drawers. In the end, I found 6 cellotapes, 15 post it notes, dozens of highlighters etc. Anyway, I have put like with like in plastic fruit punnets from home (plums mostly). It's given me a sense of control in an otherwise chaotic environment. I'm also pleased that I have found containers that feel minimal. Smile

Hubb · 14/11/2014 08:47

Oh Cool the plastic fruit punnets ....what a great idea! I'm always throwing them away but not anymore :)

Jamfilter · 14/11/2014 09:57

My extendable ikea boxes arrived today. I am far too happy as I fold my clothes into them!

LornaGoon · 14/11/2014 10:27

De-lurking to join please! I followed a link from Chat that someone started. I felt the same way about state of the house - completely overwhelmed and bit miserable about it.

Won't be able to read the book for a while as I'm a bit broke right now and the library aren't ordering too many new books in at the moment (Shock) but this thread has inspired me to get my backside in gear and sort my clothes out. I was a bit disdainful about folding everything in such a meticulous fashion but I am now an origami master at folding knickers. Grin
Thanks all, this is the push I needed to get going.

Paddlinglikehell · 14/11/2014 11:46

Well Kindled the book - part way through it., but yesterday actually pulled all the stuff in the wardrobe out and the stuff on the floor (it is a walk in one and very was messy.

Despite throwing several pairs of shoes and sandals for recycling, I feel I have failed, in that only about four items made it in the charity bag :( However, I feel happier about what I have achieved and will revisit it.

Today I have made a conscious effort to put stuff away as I go and the joy of going to my wardrobe today and pulling out something to wear easily, by being able to see everything is amazing.

All those scarves (I always wear one), hanging on the hooks or lying on the floor, are neatly folded in the drawers - which also got a sort out.

Little steps.

BeCool · 14/11/2014 11:50

LornaGoon welcome.
You can do step one without the book - read the thread and you will get the gist of it.

Gather every item of clothing (I would do this person by person) onto your bed. Go through pile item by item, keeping only those items that you LOVE (OK I kept a few more items that i actually needed until they can be replaced by something I LOVE, but largely I love 80% of my items now). Everything else goes to charity shop.

Then group your clothes - tops, cardigans, trousers etc and fold (you know how :)) and put away into drawers and hang up those that need hanging.

Done.

Next is BOOKS - you use the same method. Gather all books together and just keep those you LOVE.

MsBug · 15/11/2014 12:03

Ooh are they the IKEA ones jam? They're going on my Xmas list

What type are they?

DillyDallyDaydreamer · 15/11/2014 13:03

Right haven't read book but have streamlined mine and 4 dds wardrobes . But have a question how many clothes do you think they need? they have school uniform but out of school stuff still seems to much any ideas?

leeloo1 · 15/11/2014 14:14

DillyDilly Can you try to monitor how much they use each? Or remove all but 3 x t-shirts, trousers, jumpers 5 x socks & pants etc and see if they run out of anything?

I think the annoying thing is that after school they won't be wearing much, but will need more for the holidays - but possibly not that much more, depending on how quickly you can recycle washing etc.

leeloo1 · 15/11/2014 14:14

Jam those boxes & your clothes look amazing - so tidy! You must be very proud. Grin
