Come fold your loved clothes, and feel the spark of joy in every object you own (or thereabouts).

hmmm it could bring me joy - i don't think it would make me angry or sad. But I am feeling a bit fragile emotionally at the moment and I cannot bring myself to try it on, because it may well not look as nice as when I was supposed to wear it!! This why I am putting it off...

kiwi5 · 09/11/2014 19:52

Curly haired - sell them on eBay! You never know they could bring someone else great joy!! Just remember to work out postage!
Just had a quick look [don't look for rubber collection] Grin
There is one collection of ERASERS selling for a fiver!

ProveMeWrong · 09/11/2014 20:46

stilllearnin, I would say it's 89% likely (highly complex way I got to this stat!) that this beautiful red dress will never bring you joy. I would honestly give it a good stroke, maybe shed a tear and then wave goodbye to it as you ebay it or sell on facebook. Then you can use the money to buy something that brings you joy right now. Remember, Kondo is asking you, in that book at this very moment in time does it bring you joy? Not will it bring you joy if you lost a stone, not did it bring you joy on the day you bought it. I think this is the kind of item her whole book is based on and is probably an important one for you cracking the other categories. Unless you can pluck up the courage to try it on and find it brings you joy right now, then it makes a lot of sense to keep it. obviously just my opinion though and it's your dress!

NoMoreMissusNiceGuy · 09/11/2014 21:30

I did the cupboards in my sideboard yesterday ... 3 bags to charity shop and a pile of paper/card/boxes in the recycling.
I now have a space IN the cupboard for my camera bag and accessories rather than hiding them behing the sofa!

I also did my underwear drawer - big bag to charity shop - how satisfying is folding pants??? Grin

Rummikub · 09/11/2014 21:48

Folding pants is so satisfying! My dc are liking their new organised drawers too.

stilllearnin · 09/11/2014 22:00

Prove - I think you're 99% correct Grin The only way to know whether it gives me joy is to try it on. I will not wait to tone up etc so I'll ebay it if it does not flatter me- I'd actually like the thought of someone else looking gorgeous in it. It's a cracker.

MsBug · 09/11/2014 22:06

Still I think your dress might count as a sentimental item, so you could leave it till the end, if you wanted.

Please can I join? I superficially tidy but I need to properly declutter! Picked up lots of hints here already

stilllearnin · 10/11/2014 07:05

Folded pants are the best bit! It's like opening a box of chocolates and makes me laugh every time! Give it a go!

Ive realised that I need to follow the categories as per the plan. If I try to do the visible crap, the hidden crap will be taking all the storage space! My drawers etc are such a jumble I'll need a electrics, toiletries, photos box to dump future categories as I go! I will decide about the dress this week - thanks for your thoughts!

ProveMeWrong · 10/11/2014 08:31

Her order is good because you are doing the bulky items first, freeing up storage space as you go. Don't think it's a hard or fast rule that you can't switch round or leave the odd category though, I've left paperwork as DH is needed for that one.

WellTidy · 10/11/2014 09:19

I followed someone's link to this thread, and it is a revelation!

I moved into a much larger house several years ago, and since then, I have basically thrown nothing away. We have loads of storage, and I am using every bit of it, so we're now at capacity. I need to take action. Not easy as I work 30 hours a week, have two young children, a DH who works incredibly long hours, and very little free time.

But I am not making excuses! Its just that I am very daunted and thats making me procrastinate and sweep it all udner the carpet Smile

Justgotosleepnow · 10/11/2014 09:47

Welltidy you can do it! It won't be fast but it will be brilliant!

Asheth · 10/11/2014 11:51

Rejoining the thread after a busy half term and a mani time at work meant that I could barely keep on top of the normal housework let alone do any decluttering. But no work today, DC at school and I have spent a happt morning throwing out all sorts of komono from my sewing box! All those scraps of material that I was sure to use one day are now in the recycling bin! Grin

Our table top sale a couple of weeks back was a mixed blessing. Certainly sent lots of komono off to happy new homes and made some money. On the other hand DH got more stuff out of the loft to sell and so I think we probably now have more stuff lying around than we did before the sale... Angry

homeaway · 10/11/2014 12:16

Stillearnin take a picture of the dress if youthink it would help. Curly you could do the same if you decide to get rid of the rubbers.

SomeSortOfDeliciousBiscuit · 10/11/2014 12:27

I'm starting. Our clothes situation is so bad that they are literally everywhere - everywhere except in cupboards and drawers where they need to be.

I've ordered the book on kindle and read the first part where she's talking about how she came up with it. Then I decided to Just Fucking Do It and started on the massive pile of clothes in front of the wardrobe.

Twenty minutes and two bin bags later and I've got a clear path to the wardrobe and only kept things that bring me joy AND I think I'm going to whittle it down further as I saved at least three pairs of black leggings and don't need all of them.

Paddlinglikehell · 10/11/2014 12:29

Looking, reading, but not yet doing. Have been messing about on the IPad, for over an hour now.

How do you actually get motivated? I feel daunted :(

educatingarti · 10/11/2014 12:52

Paddling - I often feel daunted too. One thing that helps me is to break a task down into steps and then set a timer and see how much I can do in 15 minutes. the other is to set a timer for 15 minutes and tell myself, "It really doeasn't matter what I do or in what order, as long as I keep doing something." (Currently procrastinating by mnetting!)

stilllearnin · 10/11/2014 14:42

I was thinking of an eraser photobook - it's be so cool and kooky!

alemci · 10/11/2014 17:32

dumped a load of books in the salvation army book bank in the supermarket car park. great feeling.

OneWaySystemBlues · 10/11/2014 19:10

I'm still going. Pretty much done electrical stuff - got a couple of things I might sell and there is a lot of stuff in the garage for the tip. And also a box for my husband to go through and decide if there's anything that's worth keeping. I've noticed that I'm clearing out a lot of stuff on the way, in the process of clearing out a category. So today I was clearing out a drawer I'd forgotten about with papers in it and then ended up deciding it would be a good place to keep pens and stationery items. So then I decided to find all the pens in the house and now have sorted out all the ones that don't work and binned them and now have a place in the kitchen for all the pens. Then whilst I was doing that, I found some sewing stuff and sorted that out, getting rid of a whole bunch of stuff. So I can sort of see how one category leads onto another. My husband has noticed a difference too, which is good. There are a few piles of stuff that I'm leaving until later - sentimental stuff I find on the way and a couple of piles of things to be passed on - but he's noticed that there's less crap around the place, so that's encouraging!

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 10/11/2014 19:12

Managed a lot of paperwork on Sunday, it feels AMAZING! have loads more to do when I get time, prob not until the weekend now as work is crazy.

I will throw all old credit card statements etc out I think, I have access online which seems to go as far back as I have had the card, so no point in keeping them. I have one box file of old uni notes saved as possibly useful for teaching from a total of over 30 box files but to be honest I may even chuck those too as I'd probably be better re-reading the actual books rather than notes from years ago.

I'm doing the box frame thing with the dolls house people from my childhood dolls house, and donating the empty house with new people I've bought on eBay to a local charity. I think it will look cool and the house is huge so it will save space.
