Come fold your loved clothes, and feel the spark of joy in every object you own (or thereabouts).

zing! I can't get my mum to sleep in a bag, she's ancient!
plus I don't sleep well in a bag and it feels inhospitable.

I think each child should have three changes (remember if they're sick and you have no changes of sheets and we don't have a clothes drier.....)
and three sets for guests.. hmmmm that's why I have no room isn't it!?

Also I have 'beach' towels for camping and swimming etc, not as good quality.

ZingOfSeven · 22/10/2014 13:38

btw I refuse to call people coming /staying guests. that word suggests I'm running a hotel and I have to provide everything & cater for every need.

no way!
Instead we have friends, we have family.
they can bring their own towels and take them home to wash. they can bring their own pilllows and sleeping bags and save me storing heaps of extra stuff.

they can also make their on cup of tea, you know when I say "feel home" I mean it! Grin

queenceleste · 22/10/2014 13:40

fierce and excellent approach!
I think I should at least go and count what I have!

ZingOfSeven · 22/10/2014 13:43

well just one extra duvet will not make that much difference, but we have a large family and I can not store grand multiples of everything.

DH has 3 brothers, between us we have 26 kids. lots of friends with up to 7 children as well.
not all stay at once, but including baby and toddler stuff as well I would need a room just for storage of extra bedding. umm noWink

ZingOfSeven · 22/10/2014 13:46

DH does this "but we don't have enough chairs & space for everyone to sit around the table"

my reply: "can't kids sit on the floor on a blanket? like a picnic.they will love it"

him: "yeah I suppose. good thinking Batwoman!"

I didn't even know you could hire bed linen... I've found that by using the folding method my spare bed linen doesn't take up that much space so I've only got rid of the things i didn't like.

Hello again, dropped off thread for a bit but still slogging away through paperwork. Discovered I have kept pretty much every payslip ever. Was hard to throw out as there is something very appealing to me about collections like that. Compromised and kept one from each job. Think I will set up a kind of 'history' box for random things like that - just make sure it all fits in one box.

I am actually finding my house too minimalist at the moment. We recently moved from a little terrace house to a BIG semi (cashing in on the crazy London house market), and all our old stuff looks little and weird here. In the living room there is just sofa, chair, tv unit, small table with my massively culled book collection on, one painting, one mirror, one rug. It feels totally soulless.

One nice thing to come from this is that since organising the kids art materials I find them much easier to get out and put away - plus they look more inviting - so I put them out whilst I make dinner and kids draw/stick at table. Previously they were totally out of control and rarely used.

MsBug · 22/10/2014 14:02

re. bedding for children's beds, I have used a double bed sized flat sheet on dd's cot bed after a midnight poosplosion in an emergency

Nataliejane88 · 22/10/2014 14:19

Hiya,

Have been reading this thread with interest and have just ordered the book as my clutter is really bad since having ds who is now 16 months (I had a problem before but the clutter could be shut away whereas now it is really bad)

I'm always looking for inspiration online as I find it really difficult to let go of things I "may need" or with sentimental value, or things people have given me as presents. So I thought this book looked quite interesting.

I would love more room to do messy play etc with ds indoors and am of the mindset now that the space is more important for quality time etc than the things that are taking up the space. But when it comes to it, I find it really difficult to get rid of stuff!

I went through a stage of making sure I threw or donated one thing away each day but then missed days so it hasn't really worked. I seem to keep buying clothes for ds as he gets through several changes a day sometimes (leaking nappy problem has suddenly started, seem to be loose round the legs). We are doing a second hand baby sale at the weekend and have lots of stuff to sell so hopefully that will help!

ZingOfSeven · 22/10/2014 15:03

Eureka, MIL wants king sized duvet & covers and all single duvet covers! !! just spoke to her and about to chuck everything in bag ready for her to take home when she drops of kids after school.

I keep wrapping paper in one if those cheap IKEA plastic bag holders.

I did my DS's toys and books today. I obviously had to wing it as MK hasn't quite got her head around children either, but I think I found quite a good system.

I used this approach thelittlestories.com/how-to-rotate-toys/ which I think is in the spirit of KonMarie. I really liked the idea of having a 'busy bag' for all the little bits that he likes but don't fit in the categories she suggests. This means I have a bag of boredom toys for journeys etc rather than clutter now.

The room looks really tidy, almost Spartan in comparison. I just put the current rotation toys in two ikea bins so he can access it all himself. Nothing else out, all tucked under the bed, even ride one etc. Thinning the books also means he can get his own out without the rest falling on top of him! I culled lots of baby toys but have kept them as I want another soonish all being well.

Only thing I'm not sure of is his ikea play tent. It takes a lot of room, and because it's there all the time, he kind of forgets to play in it. I guess I need to dismantle and rotate that too? Pain in the bum though!

Justgotosleepnow · 22/10/2014 17:16

I've chucked stuff! And tidied up the bags in the kitchen. I've finally got the shoe storage hanging thingy that fits perfectly to the right of our kitchen dresser. No more hunting for dusty bags for me!

With christmas coming up & I know what I've bought my 18mo dd, we really need to get with the program or we won't be able to move!

A bit of eBay, charity shop & a nearly new sale & the tip is on the cards I think.

Struggling to chuck stuff like maps we don't use much. Don't know what do do with them.

CiderwithBuda · 22/10/2014 17:18

QueenCeleste - thank you! I found it on an American organising blog - IHeartOrganizing. Loved it and promptly orderd what I needed and did it. Not exactly KonMari but it is a great use of a dead space.

The only decluttering done here today was the drains! I spent the morning turning various taps on and off and flushing Various toilets under instructions from DH - drain pipe from kitchen sink was blocked and it turned out downstairs loo was blocked too. Fun morning!

ChaffinchOfMegalolz · 22/10/2014 19:06

today have been washing rugs with dsis vax.
took 5 picture frames to charity shop though Grin

Hubb · 22/10/2014 21:32

Evening all, still not finished clothes. Think the very last thing will be to cull my nice undies. Emptied a bag of about 20 bra and knickers sets and have put the bag in the charity pile. Now have to have a try on session to see what fits and then go from there. Doubt any of it fits tbh Blush haven't worn this stuff for years.

Not to throw a spanner in the works with the whole sparks joy thing..but has anyone found themself chucking stuff that still sparks joy. Like I got rid of a gorgeous silk vest that reminded me of my young thin partying days Grin but I decided it would be a good find in the charity shop for someone else. Actually, I guess when I tried it on and it wasn't flattering anymore it didn't spark joy!

Still dropping it into convo with every single person I talk to, no one has taken interest though. Their loss Wink

MsBug · 22/10/2014 22:14

I love the idea of toy rotation. Dd is still young enough for me to decide which toys to chuck so I am going to throw away any rubbish then do the rotation thing.

I just went through her books. There were loads of great ones I'd forgotten about as they were buried under piles of rubbish ones. I've therefore chucked* the rubbish ones.

*by chucked i mean given to charity

I've noticed a funny habit I have of getting several of an item which aren't quite right and keeping them all because I can't decide which is least bad. For example I had two pairs of grey thick tights because one pair falls down and the other has a hole. I think this exercise hasgiven given me the clarity to realise that I need to buy one fully functional pair and throw the others away!

ProveMeWrong · 22/10/2014 22:53

I have that habit MsBug! I have the same problem with my pans now. One is a good size but not very non stick, another is a bit too small but very good at non stick. What to do? Keep them both of course! Wink.

MsBug · 22/10/2014 23:18

Is this a case where we are justified in buying new stuff, because it will allow us to throw two away?

Woodenheart · 23/10/2014 07:22

Hi everyone,
Im still here, DD & I had norovirus, so nothing done for a week or 2

My sis is coming to collect 2 large laundry bags of clothes that she wants & I took 4 black bags to charity.

So no more tears for me & feeling a bit more in control. I still need to do the loft, & garden equipment, which I believe I may be able to sell to a market trader & my printer.

Woodenheart · 23/10/2014 07:25

Justgotosleepnow - would the library like the maps?

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 23/10/2014 07:27

prove I'd get rid of both and buy one that is a good size and non stick! or at least only keep them until you can replace them with a perfect one.

I'm doing this with clothes, I hate all my jumpers - threw most out keeping a couple until I have money and time to replace them.

ChaffinchOfMegalolz · 23/10/2014 09:07

meant to say - donate any nice books to library. ours are thrilled whaen I take stuff in

need to declutter my hair with a dye today, just haven't had 20 clear babyfree minutes to do the damn thing
