Brick fire place with an oak mantle. Picture above.
Floor to ceiling bookcase in the alcove
Tv in the other alcove (not a huge Tv)
Oak 3 drawer cupboard with a beautiful lamp
2 x 3 seater sofas
oak side tables
Ornaments that mean something
Full length curtains
cushions.
Plants or orchid

Colours..
Almond white walls
Duck egg blue/grey/natural soft furnishings

I love my sitting room

White walls , wooden floors, indian wood dakota furniture. Teak wood bowls, natural accessories from my favourite shop in the world puji.

White plantation wooden blinds, shaggy cushions and leather corner sofa.

Very nice until the dcs and cats are let loose in it.

A real fire, comfy sofa, lots of cushions, muted lighting, thick velvet curtains, carpet, lots of books on shelving, tv that dos not dominate.

My living room is cosy. Its a living/diner. Black leather sofa with cream and purple cushions, large purple rug, purple curtains, huge original inglenook with a stove, candles, fairy lights on the wooden beam, solid oak furniture and table lamps.

Wooden floor, lots of books, comfy sofa, real fire, art on the walls, lots of natural light in the daytime and soft lighting at night, with a good reading light. Lots of different natural textures, so leather, sheepskin, wool, cotton, silk, wood, stone all around somewhere. A rug. Cushions or a sheepskin rug that you can use for sitting on the floor. A musical instrument lurking somewhere. Signs of each occupant of the house. Candles. Plants or flowers.

Sadly, my sitting room is not like the one I have described in the slightest.

Big fat shabby sofa with sleeping cat. Woodburner in a big brick fireplace. Lots of mismatched art on the walls. Stuff hanging from the beams. Indian and turkish rugs over a (dusty) dark wood floor. Taxidermy. Junk shop finds, piles of books and a big lamp. Add to that the floor dotted with odd toys and books and that's our cosy living room. The light in there is terrible, my DF calls it "the opium den".

RubbishMantra · 07/08/2014 12:04

The only new pieces of furniture in mine are my big, squashy purple velvet sofa covered in mis-matched cushions and a chair and ottoman from Made. Everything else is antique or found in junk shops. White shutters, oak floor covered with a faded midnight blue rug. Walls painted a warm, dusty white. At least one of our two resident cats snoozing.

We've just swapped our lounge and dining rooms over to make a smaller cosier lounge. It feels lovely.
