July 2014: fledglings follow Flylady's tuition (don't forget your pamper mission)

ToffeeWhirl · 30/06/2014 09:14

A big thank you to slackcabbage for superb thread leadership throughout June, as well as a great intro which I am going to shamelessly borrow from now.

Struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun)? In that case, you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress – not sure if anyone has reached this pinnacle yet…? I certainly haven’t).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.
  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Babystep Number 17: set a specific bedtime and stick to it.

Your mission is to shine your bathroom sink.

It's Thursday: errand day.

The flight plan is here.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/07/2014 00:30

x-posted. I seem to be mainly sticking to a 12.30 bedtime.

ToffeeWhirl · 17/07/2014 00:31

WhoKnows - thank you. I have one last essay after this and my overall mark from the OU is based on this one essay. May give myself a break after this.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 17/07/2014 04:26

I haven't stuck to a bedtime at all. I have had the luxury of a night out with a friend. Will be dead tomo but it was nice to catch up and and feeling ready for the explosion of stress from ds in what ever form it comes tomo. Delivery of bits has helped calm him.

MercuryRising · 17/07/2014 07:24

Im good at having a regular bedtime but that will all change over the summer when I have to go back to doing night shiftsSad

I am off to Cadburys World with year 4 today Smile

Ta da this morning:
Dcs up, dressed and fed
Uniforms tumbled as they hadn't dried over night
Dw loaded
Toilet cleaned
Beds made
Kitchen sides wiped
Got dc to tidy their room - I have no idea why they cannot close a drawer after going in it!

Enjoy the sunshine everyoneSmile

BlueEyeshadow · 17/07/2014 07:56

Absolutely tearing my hair out with the boys this morning. DS1 woke up early after getting to sleep late and is consequently in a mood, which he's taking out on his little brother. Who naturally retaliates. But they won't play apart from each other because they "get lonely "!

And the dishwasher keeps getting all black and gungy inside. Grr!

Where's the Brew?!

StillWearingOddSocks · 17/07/2014 08:32

Hello flying peeps - my prob is that I get home at 7:30 pm, eat the supper DH has cooked (we all eat together) - get DS to bed too late...should be 8:30 but I miss him at work so it's more like 9:30 or even 10 done nights Hmm

Then I inevitably fall asleep next to him. And that's it. Some nights I get up again around 11pm & try & fly - & watch game of thrones tbh with DH

Consequence is minimal flying. I feel like I'm juggling working with parenting & so I'm not a proper parent. You all sound so amazing.

StillWearingOddSocks · 17/07/2014 08:34

Ps blue - no icon for coffee on the phone app. But if there was i would pour you a large one Smile

ToffeeWhirl · 17/07/2014 09:31

Swan - I have just re-read my round up and realised I wrote 'congratulations on managing to make a decision. It’s not easy'. I meant: congratulations on making THE decision, ie about home educating. I didn't mean you didn't find it easy to make any decisions! Sorry, was very sleepy when posting.

Still - what you describe sounds very familiar and I don't have the excuse that I've been at work all day: I often fall asleep next to DS2, then wake up wide awake around midnight. And I'm sure you're a wonderful parent - don't put yourself down!

Blue - sympathies on the grumpy boys and grungy dishwasher.

Mercury - that sounds great fun. Hope you come back with bagfuls of chocolate.

Bitchy - glad you had a good night out.

Woke up around 5 this morning with bad hayfever, which has persisted all morning. Am really tired. However, we are visiting a prospective school for DS1 so I need to pull myself together. I wish I'd managed another good night's sleep before this visit as I felt so good on eight hours' sleep yesterday.

ta da

B/fast at crack of dawn
Unloaded and reloaded d/w
Mopped up DS2's water (knocked over his glass in his sleep)
Wiped down kitchen counters
Worked through an entire basket load of ironing
Hung ironed clothes up in respective wardrobes
Printed out diagnosis letter to take to the school
Found SATNAV
Mopped up Ds1's water (also knocked over his glass in his sleep!)
Boys' breakfasts

to do
Put washing on to hang out before we go

Planning an excursion to the garden centre on the way home to pick up some plants for my DM to plant in our garden whilst she's here, as she's itching to get our garden shipshape again. No idea what to buy at this time of year Confused.

Hope you all have a good day today.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 17/07/2014 10:18

Swan yes, it was good to get all that dust out of there (especially for ds2's allergies!!). And at least the cables are better organised.

Toffee I wouldn't say I'm wishing I hadn't started the wallpaper. yet. But I am irritated that I have to stop midproject and fix the wall. I shouldn't be surprised - it's happened all over the house doing various projects. Hmm

BitchyVstheUFOs · 17/07/2014 11:44

ta da
trip up to staples
drop off prescription whilst picking up ds'
hand prescription in at Pharmacy

Currently writing the shopping list for tesco. Don't need much but need a few specific bits and bobs. It is going to be a very bitty small jobs that take forever to do kinda day.

toffee could you ask your mum for some advice on the plants?

Trazzletoes · 17/07/2014 13:09

Toffee don't think I didn't notice your Shock. Grin

Heading home from work. I need to clean and tidy kitchen.
Take DS shopping for some pirate costume type stuff for nursery leaving party tomorrow
Call new wraparound care to confirm place
Laundry reboot.

How do you all clean your washing machines? How much bleach do you put in?

DS took his multivits fine yesterday. Much harder today! He is Vitamin D deficient so has Asda kids vitamin D plus asda kids multivit. They are both chewy. Trying to wean him off his naso-gastric tube!

Trazzletoes · 17/07/2014 13:10

I forgot:
Put away Mt Washmore
DS' parents evening tonight.

hyperhops · 17/07/2014 14:46

afternoon all
sorry for not keeping up with you all this week. Has been crazy busy here with umpteen million end of term activities/trips/sports days etc

have done minimal FLYing. House was a pit this morning but cleaner has been whilst I was at work and is now restored to order Smile

I have for some mad reason decided to start painting my horrible olduglyperfectly functional bedroom furniture. Have done 3/4 of it in white which looks OKish but am now having an urge to try the Annie Sloan paint and have ordered tester pot...am begining to think though I should have just saved up for new...

have lots of washing too to catch up on....

now off on school pick up. Will try and catch up properly tonight.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 17/07/2014 16:15

Holy shit. Ds seems to be much calmer today! early interventions of sensory stuff and food would appear to be the way forwards. he still bite me but it was calm and quite and gentle so more mouthing that biting Whoo hoo.

Swanhildapirouetting · 17/07/2014 16:19

resisting the urge to start gardening before we depart tomorrow. I must stick to the tidy house plan.

done
Deregistered ds2, who is blissfully happy atm on a school trip Confused It feels really very odd. But moderately exciting. Now of course I am worrying about what sort of card to give his ex-teachers...(the whole SEN department really Hmm
I had an awful moment when I realised I hadn't put tomorrow's date on the deregistration letter, only today's and he might not be allowed to go to tomorrow's prize giving (he will get a badge for his performance in J) SEN lady said it shouldn't be a problem..but worry worry worry..Officialdom makes worrying natural.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 17/07/2014 17:08

Saw this and thought of you lot...

Cadburys world was great and I received an email saying I had been recommended for qts - fantastic day Grin Grin Grin

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 17/07/2014 19:28

Bitchy Grin I'd say that's fairly accurate.

checked bank
petrol in car
supermarket for fruit
stopped at bank for a few transactions
baked 2 loaves of banana bread
cooked chicken carcass, so now waiting for soup and dumplings to be done

to do
fix the vacuum (it went wonky yesterday so either tonight or tomorrow I need to take the wretched thing apart and fix it - tomorrow is more likely though Grin)
meal plan for week
supermarket list (and decide where to go - have a couple vouchers, so not sure which is better buy yet)

Doodlekitty · 17/07/2014 19:54

hyperhops · 17/07/2014 20:41

evening all
have read thread in attempt to catch up on this weeks happenings but you have all had so much happening!
swannare you off to Ireland tomorrow? Well done on de-registering ds. Im sure you will be glad.
doodle yay for helpful dh
mercury fab day indeed
bitchy glad ds is seeming calmer.re ice skates I cant remember now what she got. It is her first pair. I started off suggesting the cheapest but shop lady talked me into gradually more expensive pairs!

Currenltly at archery with dd1.
Feeling stressed still. Holidays looming and still need to finalise date for Ireland trip but think it will be just dh with various dc this year as getting leave in a chunk is tricky for me for next couple of weeks. As usual it all proves very chaotic and stressful but I'm trying to ignore it all.

Still pondering bedroom furniture dilemma! really want to make my bedroom lovely little haven!

right. WIll bbtomorrow Grin

Swanhildapirouetting · 17/07/2014 22:16

hyper archery, fancy! Sounds so romantic..
No, not Ireland, Spain. Costa Brava. My sister had one fancy holiday too many and I finally cracked.

done
organised catsitter[s]
packed some more
washed some more
picked ds2 from his school trip. He ran off demanding a snack and drink to nearest shop and bought himself Fanta, and it was a dramatic reaction. I really think he is allergic anything orange. He goes hyper, and crazy. Then unfortunately dh gave him a large glass of orange juice at supper. Cue seriously dizzy behaviour. We have agreed to cut out orange liquids.

Ds2 received an enormous envelope full of homework. I kid you not, there was Maths, Geography, History AND several book reviews/reading list. We were so delighted that we DONT HAVE TO DO ANY OF IT, YAY...Possibly the Maths, just for fun Wink Ds2 said he kept very quiet and thought to himself, I'll burn this when I get home..

BlueEyeshadow · 17/07/2014 22:58

Evening all!

Stupidly hot tonight and boys couldn't get to sleep, again, so expecting another grumpy morning tomorrow. Here's hoping for no revving lorries to wake DS1 at 6.15 this time... Grr!

DS2 made cards for 2 nursery assistants (only 2 teachers & 1 nursery nurse to go!)
DS1 decided he needed a present for the teacher he has on Thursdays and Fridays, so we started to make cakes at 5.10, at the same time as I was cooking tea. Must have been mad, but they turned out quite nicely.

So, Ta da!
Laundry
Work
Grocery shopping
Card making
Cooked dinner
Made small batch of choc fairy cakes
Iced them
Rescued kitchen from explosion of cocoa and icing sugar

To do
Work out how to get cakes to school!

Swan - Shock at folder of holiday homework. So glad it doesn't have to be done!

SC - meant to say, your DD sounds very like my boys too. Have you read Raising your Spirited Child? I need to reread it myself!

ToffeeWhirl · 17/07/2014 23:36

Swan - I can sense your excitement over the thread Smile. Deregistering gave me a really elated, liberated feeling both times. Personally, I would have a rummage through the homework in case there's anything useful to home ed in there, then ceremoniously burn/dump the rest of it.

Visited prospective school for DS1 today. It was very impressive, but my gut feeling said it wasn't right for DS1. So, the search for a 'good enough' (have given up on 'perfect') school continues.

Really tired after my early start this morning, so will just post the links and run now:

Tomorrow is Babystep Number 18: read Flylady's 11 Commandments.

It's Friday: declutter your bag and car.

Missions are here.

Flight plan is here.

Am really sleepy, so sorry if I've written anything wrong. Night all.

lostprince · 18/07/2014 07:15

Morning all. Apologies for radio silence I had half a week off after our BBQ then lost the thread. Back on track now. Yesterday floors swept and mopped and a few loads of laundry done as it was such a gorgeous day. Bedtime routine out the window with a new baby, I just sleep when I can. I'm out for most of today so not sure how much will get done but I think I will tackle a few hotspots when I get a chance.
