July 2014: fledglings follow Flylady's tuition (don't forget your pamper mission)

ToffeeWhirl · 30/06/2014 09:14

A big thank you to slackcabbage for superb thread leadership throughout June, as well as a great intro which I am going to shamelessly borrow from now.

Struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun)? In that case, you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress – not sure if anyone has reached this pinnacle yet…? I certainly haven’t).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.
  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Did you specifically tell her to wash her face SC? I have to be very very specific with ds re washing instructions.

Our new postie is rather young and lovely. on the plus note he has delivered the parcel for ds of sensory bits. Pity that one of the bits is not working though.

Swanhildapirouetting · 16/07/2014 11:34

SC arf at M & S suppers. I foolishly have prepared lunch from scratch today, why oh why? I am soo crap at entertaining, it puts me in a tremendous tizzy. Luckily one of the guests has been here many times when it was a tip. Why do other people seem to have houses you can walk into and they are fresh and lovely?

done
asparagus salad
tomato salad
cake (from yesterday)
roasted peppers

will serve with baked potatoes and ham. was going to make quiche then gave up.

put two lots of garden rubbish in sacks
loads of washing drying
spirits of salts in loft loo

rang school x 2 re: ds1 and D of E - I am tearing my hair out trying to organise that boy, he has now lost sponsorship form Hmm

Toffee that sounds quite scary, yes. Hope essay is going alright.

now need to pot up the last lot of plants
sweep path
fetch dd's bikini

BitchyVstheUFOs · 16/07/2014 11:37

Do other people have kids with special needs? Division of available energy. Parents of kids who have needs that require more energy to look after them do not have the energy to be anal about tidy houses. People whose kids are run of the mill might do.

slackcabbage · 16/07/2014 11:57

Swan your lunch sounds absolutely lovely! Your guests will really enjoy it and I hope you will too. (You have my sympathies though because I am in a constant state of anxiety when we have guests - would love to have a guest-ready house but not possible here - added to the fact that I am afraid they will be assailed by leaks, floods, teetering furniture or falling lump of plaster).

Bitchy no didn't give specific instructions and that, combined with parental neglect owing to Mumsnet use Grin results in bits not being washed properly!!

I must say though, having read the thread back, there are enormous similarities with dd (supposedly nt) and others with sn issues on this thread:

-wrapping herself up far too warm at night (not liking starchy cold sheets)
-refusing to wear anything "spiky'" or "itchy" or in any way slightly uncomfortable
-bad reaction to certain foods (green apples in particular)

  • very poor re: transitions
  • tantrums over getting wet/washing
  • overly anxious in unfamiliar situations
  • butterfly mind/very easily distracted/lack of focus

Ed psych didn't really have time to go in to above, except the latter, but it is something we will definitely pursue next term.

ToffeeWhirl · 16/07/2014 12:22

Well, that's my excuse anyway, Bitchy Wink. (Did someone ask? Can't see the question). When my DM is incredulous about my inability to worry about direct debit costs and the state of our garden, I do remind her that I have plenty of other worries to focus on before I have the luxury of getting to those things. (To be fair, she is always sympathetic and did say, when we last stayed with her, that she had no idea how we coped).

Swan - your lunch sounds delicious - you are obviously a wonderful cook. I'm sure your friends will appreciate all the effort you've put into it. Yes, residential school is the last thing I ever thought of and I don't know whether I'm hoping to find the answer to all DS1's problems (wonderful atmosphere, lovely children, fabulous and understanding teachers) or another school to cross off the list Confused.

SC - I agree with your DH: M&S meals much more exciting than roof repairs! Grin Hope you get all your jobs done.

Peach - re home ed: when I home educated DS1 for a year, we always stopped in the holidays because his little brother (at school) was on holiday then too. This time around (now home educating little brother), I'm hoping that DS2 doesn't notice that all his school friends are on holiday and we can carry on doing stuff (it's fun). Hopefully, he'll then be on track to re-enter school next term if he gets his place (still waiting to hear).

Welcome, Lairy. I see you are struggling with an essay too. What are you studying? I'm trying to finish an OU essay today .

Carpe - sorry you're suffering after your mammoth gardening efforts yesterday.

DS2 is having a really happy time with his friend (lots of laughter), so I'm now free to finish the essay. Phew.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 16/07/2014 12:29

Carpe sorry you're sore. But it was for a worthy cause, right? I'll bet you smile every time you see that drive.

LairyP welcome! Congrats! Don't over do it! We all do right away, in an effort to make a new start...then we pull back and realise chocolate and feet up isn't always bad. Grin One more day until maternity leave? Bet you're excited today!!!

Coffee welcome! Sounds like you're keeping pretty busy there! I was reminded when reading your list that I haven't done a freezer inventory in awhile, so I'll be adding that to my list for this week. The dangers of reading everyone's lists - finding something else I need to do! Grin

Peach I could never get stbx on board, DD was on board when she lived here as she was older. Ds1 and ds2 are learning to be on board with it - not keen though. But they're only 7 and 4, so still young.

SC Hooray for full holiday mode! Had to laugh over the mobile though. I swear mine has legs and walks off sometimes. Hmm

WhoKnows I notice you have an allotment. May I ask how much time you spend on it generally? I have mulled over getting one (well, putting my name on the list for one). I would love to have a veg garden, although I don't know how good I'd be at it. I worry about the time needed though. And good luck on your appeal. Statementing stuff is so exhausting and frustrating.

Doodle Hope you're feeling a bit better today. Seriously, just ignore MIL.

Eyelet If you have another mammoth list today, I will have to rest before reading it. Grin

Trazzletoes good luck on your run! What vitamins does your ds take? We tried quite a few before we finally got the chewable squishy ones (that we trialed on a MN product test). It's the only ones the dcs will eat.

Mercury Brave you hanging your washing out. Every single time I hung my washing out before leaving the house, it rained. Hmm That's why I bought a condensor dryer. Grin

Swan Glad your ds had a good time in Belgium. Grin at the chocolate factory verdict. I imagine you're right - expecting Willy Wonka. Hope you are having a nice lunch today. I also worry when others come to my house - I have a few friends whose houses are immaculate and I always feel a bit embarrassed when they come over - they never EVER say anything bad about my house. It's just my paranoia, I suppose.

Toffee congrats on the 8 hours of sleep!! I understand how you feel about the weekly boarding. I would really struggle with that as well.

Bitchy did you solve your lunch box drinks problem? And yes, I have one child with disabilities and one child with SNs. I have noticed there are a number of us on this board with children with SNs.

Waving and hello to Blue hyperhops and everyone I have missed.

I've been breathing in very thick dust. I'm pretty sure it was about an inch thick behind my television stand. Blush So I spent about almost two hours moving furniture around, disconnecting all the cables (one by one, I'm not insane, you know!! had to be able to put it back together!) and rearranging the cables neatly.

Then it was vacuuming all the dust and then just before I was ready to start wiping down the wall one last time before I took down the shelf and started the wallpaper.... I bumped a cable protector strip (whatever they're called) that was attached to the wall, and the blasted thing came off the wall. Taking a number of huge chunks of plaster with it!! Angry

So now I have to fix THAT before I can do the wallpaper. And of course, I don't have anything to fix it with right now, and no spare money to pick it up until Friday. grrrrrrrr

Wallpaper will have to be postponed until Monday now, provided the stuff I buy on Friday to fix the holes is dry and solid by Monday.

Isn't that just like DIY? Fix one thing, find another to fix. And now I need to put the tv back in place again and take it all out again Friday to fix wall, and back. And again on Monday to put up the wallpaper and back. Well, better go start putting it all back in place for today.

coffeeandcream · 16/07/2014 12:32

Hello again and thanks for the welcome.

So far today I have:
Made beds,
Done dishwasher
Washing machine on
Put away yesterday's dry laundry
Baked some savoury muffins
Made Doctors appt
I intended to get dinner in the slow cooker but realised we're lacking vital ingredients. DS had probably put my tinned tomatoes in the laundry basket or similar...

Still to do:
Declutter dining room to make up a bag for the charity shop
Take bag to charity shop
Buy tinned tomatoes
Package up old phone to post for recycling (then wait impatiently for £110 cheque!)
Menu plan for the week
Book pet sitter for next weekend
Write up some eBay listings.

But first, sit, read book, enjoy silence whilst DS naps...

CarpeJugulum · 16/07/2014 12:36

Damn... just burst a blister on my finger, right beside my wedding ring. I've swapped the ring onto my other hand, but it just feels weird...

Work is... not going, and I now have chocolate!

Fragglewump · 16/07/2014 12:48

Thanks all for boot up the backside yesterday! Today I'm back in full flight mode and have got loads done. Interestingly my overstuffed with junk craft room has been niggling me for weeks but it's just felt too enormous to tackle. Today I took the bull by the hints and after a couple hours it is done! Now I can get back to my craft projects - hurrah! Go me. Have also got yet more bags for charity loaded up and next to my car ready to drop later when I take kids to the dentist. Now a quick bit of gardening......

GoingGoingGoth · 16/07/2014 13:33

Afternoon all, not sure where yesterday went (apart from a 2 hour ironing session)

Can't believe we're almost half way through DD's holiday, can believe we're at the library every other day.

DH back at jury duty today, he did have a case which ended yesterday but he still has to turn up for the rest of the week in case he's needed for another case.

Dd & I are heading into the city today! I've got blood donors and she's going to check out a different library for a change of books (our local one is good but she fancied a change)

Nothing else exciting happening today unless you include we've made a huge bowl of jelly for dinner tonight -2 layers! Grin

GoingGoingGoth · 16/07/2014 13:34

Argh, why does my iPad insist on changing my , and . to !

I'm not that excited.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 16/07/2014 13:46

Grin goth. Has dd been using it and got it too the point where that is the default auto correct for punctuation?

Done some stuff. Not a lot but some. Need to make a list later but meh is pretty much key today. i think it is something to do with all the coffee I have been drinking. Am pretty certain the dream about the 94yo monster killing grannie is something to do with the coffee Hmm Meh to it all

BitchyVstheUFOs · 16/07/2014 13:47

And yes I am procrastinating on anti procrastination day so nerh

ToffeeWhirl · 16/07/2014 14:53

I have finished and submitted my OU essay! Grin

So relieved that's done. I had to submit it quick before I started tinkering with it again. Now I can switch off.

Just off into town to buy new shoes for DS2 and visit MIL, who is on the mend at last.

BBL.

Hi all

Thanks so much for the support, it really helped. DH was also amazing last night and is very much of the team mentality. Ive had a really successful day at work too which always perks me up.

To do for this evening: Get the child to bed, tidy toys, do dishes, pack for weekend away (child free!), Actually do evening routine

Eyelet · 16/07/2014 20:14

Whoop whoop toffee I am v pleased for you - now you can chill a bit Grin

Work day today, it was SO hot in the office I achieved pretty much nothing. Feel hugely guilty because childcare for both DC costs a small fortune. I'm working now and will be all evening as its cooler.

so no flying as such except two lots of laundry, DH is going to water the garden and pack the children's bags.

Read a brilliant article today at work about the evils of smartphones and the impact on socialisation - the ease with which people can be constantly in touch via a multitude of apps, the way those who paint the perfect lives are the most unhappy etc etc. Really struck a chord with me as DH and I both work in IT and we are glued to smartphones in the evenings.

Swanhildapirouetting · 16/07/2014 20:21

lunch went well
ds2 picked up
made him have a shower
watched Mr Selfridge
and between went on...
dd bikini errand which was pointless as they had sold out of that style = but at least she was very polite about it

Beavers helping
handed in a form
avoided all the emails I need to fill in re: passports

sitting in a big pile of clothes which need ironing now

ds2 off to a west end musical tomorrow, one but last day of school. We got the email about all the homework they are sending us to do in the holidays, I must say it concentrates the mind wonderfully..Deregisteration letter goes in tomorrow..[quake] Ds2 still in excellent form when I pick him up, it all feels a bit like a phoney war.

Swanhildapirouetting · 16/07/2014 20:24

SC hope Mobile has turned up. Mine is often in the car side pocket. Or under a pile of papers. When the battery runs out will you hear it squeaking perhaps?

Toffee enjoy your drink, well deserved after OU essay.

Swanhildapirouetting · 16/07/2014 20:27

alice thick dust is the most satisfying to clean though isn't it. I live in fear of disconnecting my telly wires as I have absolutely no idea how to put it all together again - it is spaghetti junction, not to speak of wires hanging from extension leads.

MercuryRising · 16/07/2014 21:27

Grin Well done toffee Grin

Sc I have to send dd back upstairs to wash her face every morning after she has supposedly had a wash!

Ta da this evening:
Popped to my dsis for tea and a chat.
Washed pots
Unloaded and reloaded dw
Hung out ironing
Small pile of ironong
Kitchen cleaned
Dc bathed

BlueEyeshadow · 16/07/2014 21:46

Well done on the essay, Toffee. Wine

I've mostly been proofreading today, apart from the 2 hours (!) at DS1's sports day. He did really well and won 2 races [proud] and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves which made it nice to watch.

Did manage to deal with a hotspot or two as well.

Big waves to everyone, esp. Peach, Coffee and Lairy.

Glad you're feeling better today Doodle and hope you've eased up a bit Carpe.

ToffeeWhirl · 17/07/2014 00:23

Had a happy, chatty drink with my friend and was back in time to watch 'The Sopranos' with DH Smile.

Thanks for all the congratulations on finishing my essay. Had a nice email from my tutor too, telling me to relax now!

Doodle - good to see your DH is very much on your side Smile. And I see you are having a child-free weekend - me too! Our first in 14 years!

Roundup time

Eyelet is trying to keep an allotment with the help Hmm of two toddlers. She is another fledgling having to fight for a statement for her DC Sad.

Trazzle has decluttered enough to hoover Shock. She was aiming for a 10K run this evening and to get her DS to take his vitamins orally (I bet I know which of those two was harder Wink).

Mercury is an early bird and was Flying before 7.30am!

Swan prepared a delicious lunch for three friends and stressed about the state of her house. Of course, the lunch went really well. Her deregistration letter for DS2 goes in tomorrow (congratulations on managing to make a decision. It’s not easy).

Bitchy’s DS went without his lunchtime drink today. Maybe she was distracted by her new ‘young and lovely’ postie.

Lairy joined us – welcome to the thread Smile. She is 37 weeks pregnant with twin boys and looking forward to maternity leave.

Carpe struggled through a day at work on coffee and painkillers (and maybe some chocolate), but it was worth it because she has a beautiful driveway now.

Peach brought us copious amounts of cake, tea and wine Smile. She has established some good Flying habits and her house is tidier than it used to be. As for getting the rest of the family on board: Flylady thinks that the rest of the family join in because they see you doing all the work and want to help. I’m still waiting for that…

SC is briefly back home and existing on M&S readymeals. She has plenty to do in her two days back . And she has lost her mobile (I’m always doing that – it drives DH crazy).

Alice is wishing she’d never started wallpapering…

Coffee is making money out of her old mobile. She’s on a roll with her ‘ta da’ lists.

Fraggle decluttered her craft room and will now be able to use it again.

Goth gave blood and made a huge bowl of jelly for pudding tonight.

Doodle has a lovely DH and has decided to ignore MIL’s comments.

Blue has been mostly proofreading, but she did manage to fit in going to her DS’s sports day.

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/07/2014 00:29

Well done on the essay Toffee - was that the end of the module? I've got to choose my next one soon and am completely undecided.

I'm not doing very well on early nights. Tried ironing earlier, just too warm. Have put out a few hotspots today at least. DCs keep coming home from school with big piles of paper. Oh and I just decluttered my handbag, relieved it of loads of sweets, pens, receipts etc.
