July 2014: fledglings follow Flylady's tuition (don't forget your pamper mission)

ToffeeWhirl · 30/06/2014 09:14

A big thank you to slackcabbage for superb thread leadership throughout June, as well as a great intro which I am going to shamelessly borrow from now.

Struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun)? In that case, you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress – not sure if anyone has reached this pinnacle yet…? I certainly haven’t).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.
  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Hi all! Hope everyone ok! Just Flying in and out!

Wrote at least three posts yesterday with personals, but each time lost or interrupted. Leaving in one hour - coming and going around various bits of Europe between now and end of hols - in various combinations of family members!

Haven't left house as I would want it to be left. One cleaner heavily pregnant and back-up (office) cleaner just out of hospital. So focusing on having offices cleaned and pets looked after and house, as usual, lowest priority.

Just wanted to wish you all very happy holidays!

Swan thanks for tips for finding mobile but still proving elusive! And congrats on deregistering etc.

Toffee sorry school wasn't what you were looking for. Hope you can find an alternative.

Mercury glad I'm not the only one with a mucky pup!

Bitchy glad your ds survived end of term madness and is a bit calmer now

Big feathery waves to everyone else I have missed!

Take care everyone! Tallly-hoooooooooooooo!!

[Leaves out trays of croissants, strong coffee, and home made blackcurrant jam on naughty corner bar for everyone to help themselves!]

Only 6 days of school left, not going to be helped by the fact that ds has a follow up meeting about his behaviour with officialdom next week. But seeing has he has spent the last 5 mins running a pumice stone up and down his arm I think it he is seriously under sensory stimulated atm due to the anxiety so hitting the sensory work hard in the hope that it will be the answer to the usual nightmare at this time of the year, an on going solution to the normal hell. fuck you camhs there is a solution and an easy one

Weather has turned and I have had to dig out jumpers for ds. Trousers alas are so half mast they are almost shorts so he will still have cold legs today. And I will need to figure out what size he is likely to end up being in Sept. Hmm

Plan for today is school run and nap, then sorting everything for the usual fri night long drive. Anything else is a bonus.

ta da
lunch for ds
find uniform
put a load of washing on to dry

Swanhildapirouetting · 18/07/2014 09:19

Toffee I don't feel excited so much as nervous. However, summer holidays are an excellent way to start as I mean to go on...This a challenge for me, certainly, but I think it is a small price to pay for ds2 learning some essential skills, (self motivation being the most obvious) which most children would have picked up by now, but he just hasn't.. The homework alone is a reminder to me of how far behind he is. He has benefited a lot from school in other ways though.

Ds2 nearly had a panic attack this morning from the hay fever sensations, he said he felt his nose was going to explode. We had a thunder storm last night so it is very wet and steamy here.

Dh is driving me mad now fiddling around with zips and suitcases and doing a lot of heavy breathing, hiding of Euro notes in gym shoes.

Cleaning lady about to come, hopefully she will leave a nice fresh feeling behind her and disperse that aroma of old shoes and stale gym kits.

Swanhildapirouetting · 18/07/2014 09:35

done
bought four presents for teachers, and made ds2 write his name on two cards (any further writing caused a complete explosion, so I had to write the words Thank You Mrs ..)
three kids to school

todo
more cat food
find elusive black skirt in shop
strip beds
put away dry clothes
ask cleaning lady to hoover cleared bedrooms
spray flash on the baths
soak loo seat
pot up the last cosmos
dig in the penstemon
pack final items
pack some small cars

ToffeeWhirl · 18/07/2014 10:07

Swan - I felt very nervous when I deregistered DS1, as you probably remember. It's a useful emotion because it pushes you into planning what you're going to do, which is a good thing, I think.

Bitchy - glad you can see an end in sight to the school term.

I've just dyed a load of laundry pink. Including DH's and my expensive work shirts.

Fuck fuck fuck.

ToffeeWhirl · 18/07/2014 12:25

Is this link any help, Trazzle?

OP posts:
Trazzletoes · 18/07/2014 12:54

Thank you for the link. A friend who works in theatre has consulted their wardrobe dept who have said Dylon apparently. I will do this somehow!

CarpeJugulum · 18/07/2014 13:44

Dylon is the bees knees for pink washing - and yellow as well; I remember doing my work shirts with a yellow duster - it saved the day.

Well, DH has thrown a spanner into my mind planning by applying for a new job... in Nottingham! About an hour away from DPIL & DBIL, so logistically we could live about 1/2 an hour away from his work and 1/2 an hour away from them; which would make baby sitting and actually seeing them so much easier! But, it would mean moving my whole life 400 miles away. Closing date is today, with interviews next week so it should be a quick turnaround... But... But... But... Erk!!!!

BitchyVstheUFOs · 18/07/2014 13:53

Some real nice places to live around that way carpe

CarpeJugulum · 18/07/2014 14:49

Yes, but it's 400 miles away from where I am now - so a huge culture shock...

BitchyVstheUFOs · 18/07/2014 14:56

They are not that bad.... WinkGrin

Shannaratiger · 18/07/2014 15:07

Hi every one, not been on for ages but am trying to keep up with house. However sorting out Dd's SEN statement for hopefully special school next september. Also getting married this october so my dyspraxic, epileptic brain is completely shutting down and even doing basic housework is a struggle, just want to sit in a corner and close off teh world.

Anyway hopefully my sanity will survive and also cope with summer holidays. Hmm Think I'm just going to give up, say i don't care and focus on the housework that I can do!!
Am going to try and get on here everyday, although might not leave a comment!
Quick question, how many people did you have at your wedding and were they mainly family or friends. I'm having a massive mental problems with having family and friends in the same place, i want a perfect weddign that my family will be proud of ( for once).

Sorry i'm off to get the kids, next time I'll be more sane, less stressed and let you know FLYing stuff. Smile

CarpeJugulum · 18/07/2014 15:09

Not like that Grin. Just the town we live in now isn't that huge (maybe about 10-12,000 people?) and the education system is different, and the way of living would be different and I wouldn't have a job to start with... It's sort of a huge call to go!

BlueEyeshadow · 18/07/2014 19:28

Aagh! I just can't get the dishwasher clean! Would running Milton through it work, do you reckon?

coffeeandcream · 18/07/2014 22:10

Evening everyone,

I haven't done much flying these last two days as they're work days for me, and tonight is my night, so I've been at my archery club.

DH has been working at home this week so thd place is a tip. Will rope him in to help tidy over the weekend, and thank god thd cleaner comes on Monday.

Blue, what's wrong with your dishwasher? Does it need a general clean or is it a but whiffy? I never close my d/w door fully unless it'd bring switched on which helps

BlueEyeshadow · 18/07/2014 22:31

coffee It keeps developing black mould. I've run it hot with vinegar and/or bicarb several times, and one of those dishwasher cleaner things. I don't keep it fully closed, but there isn't room in the kitchen to leave it right open either.

So, ta da!
Scrubbed out DW filter and all internal surfaces etc, again! (bleugh)
sorted 3 loads of laundry
finished proofreading job
read quite a bit of the Spirited Child book
Had BBQ for dinner
Rescued kitchen

Carpe - can understand feeling daunted by such a big move.

Waves to shanara. Um, our wedding was 200 or so people, mostly family, some friends, as I recall. Might be misremembering though, was nearly 13 years ago Shock

Eek at laundry, Trazzles. Hope dylon worked.

Toffee - sorry planned w/e didn't work out, hope you can still get a night out.

Still too hot here, but going to try for bed at a decent hour for once. Night!

ToffeeWhirl · 18/07/2014 23:32

Babystep Number 19: one of Flylady's testimonials, so not really a step at all Confused.

No missions at the weekend.

Saturday is Family Fun day.

Flight plan is here.

Too sleepy to post any more than that. Night all.

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/07/2014 23:42

Evening,

Blue - we keep the DW closed (have to as it is in a corner and you can't reach the cupboards above or next to it otherwise). It doesn't get whig=ffy, but I do do a cycle of the highest temp once in a while. I use the steam cleaner to do all the door trims/black mouldy crevices etc. Before I had the SC I used to use Barkeepers Friend on a toothbrush.

Shannara - welcome back. We had about 50 people at our wedding, it was a compromise, I wanted immediate family and closest friends only (about 20 people), my DM wanted the entire extended families which would have meant about 150+ people. However we could find any venues to cater well for 20, other than registry office/restaurant, so we ended up with a fabulous venue and 50 people, about 12 family members and the rest friends. Now I am older and a bit more confident I would probably cope with a bigger wedding, and with hindsight would have liked more relatives and less friends, but you couldn't invite selected relatives and not others and the thought of 150+ people at that time in my life would have had me running for the hills.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 18/07/2014 23:59

Argh. Not only did I not get to fixing the vacuum today, but I also have discovered something is wrong with the water heater/boiler. The hot water lasts about 5 minutes. and that's it. Impossible to shower 2 dcs and an adult, so I have to space it out throughout the day. What. A. Pain!

I will have to catch up over the weekend.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 19/07/2014 10:55

I have been putting off the fabric shop to the point where I can no longer. So heading off that way. I need behaving thoughts sent in this direction please...

Eyelet · 19/07/2014 12:44

Enjoy bitchy I'd love a swift donerip to the fabric shop but unfortunately our best one is too far to walk with the DC and parking is a blooming nightmare. Plus theres the small issue of a number of unfinished projects which need doing urgently first.

Another awful week of sleep, babylet threw up on the way to childcare yesterday so that caused chaos as I had a lecture I HAD to attend. Luckily a friend stepped up and helped but still it was a bit stressful and I owe her a favour or ten!

Have taken a major step towards improving our morning routine by using one of the £2 Aldi laundry baskets by the front door ans packing it the night before with everything needed for the next day for me and DC, that way when we leave for nursery I grab the tub and if its not in there then tough. In the afternoon all the fandom bags, wellies, sunhats, dirty clothes and lunchboxes are pit into it for unloading. Method validated this morning when DH said he'd unloaded it last night, put the dirties by the wm and repacked it with beakers and snacks for our garden centre trip today.

I've also purchased a hideously expensive moisturiser with high SPA which is now part of my morning routine. I have a pretty tub by the kitchen mirror which hides my makeup and DHs hair stuff so we get ready while DC are eating their breakfast.

to do
Washing up - done
Wm - done
Garden centre for gifts, lunch - done
DC down for naps - done although oldest is being troublesome
60th birthday party to attend
List of meals to write for the month (including stocking the freezer of a friend)
Food shop to be ordered
Bins out -
Greenhouse to sort out URGENT
Veg patch to weed URGENT

Working 8-8 tomorrow so DH needs some time out today else he will be vair grumpy!

coffeeandcream · 19/07/2014 16:45

You've been busy eyelet! I wouldn't fancy being in a greenhouse in this heat though...

Bitchy have fun fabric shopping. I get thoroughly overexcited just looking in haberdashery windows, once I get inside, I'm a lost cause.

Ta da list so far:
D/W
One wash load
Two boxes of random tat taken to the charity shop
DS had his first proper haircut at a hairdressers
Minging kitchen bin and composter emptied,
Bottles sterilised
Random cups and glasses collected from all round the house
Cat trays poo picked

To do
Make bed
Bath DS
More laundry
Kitchen hot spots (window sills and work top dumping ground behind the door
