Heartfelt and huuuumungous thanks to Goth for being such a superlative, consistent and professional thread leader throughout May (and wow to all those fantastic round-ups every night).

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new then trying to spend 15mins decluttering and the babysteps is the most. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers very very welcome!

Waves and slumps in naughty corner. Done some stuff today, but blowed if I can remember what!

Try again tomorrow.

MercuryRising · 03/06/2014 22:15

Wow eyelet I agree you have had an impressively productive day! I didn't do everything on my list but did get a lot of work done. I also managed to:
Get two loads of washing done and dried.
Do some weeding.
Pay the deposit for ds birthday party
A small amount of weeding
Met dc from school with their bikes
Tidied the dining table
Put laundry away

Im off for a reasonably early night as tomorrow is my last teacher training lecture so I would like to be full of beans! I can't believe in 6 weeks they will be unleashing me!!

ToffeeWhirl · 03/06/2014 22:35

Sorry to have been away for a couple of days. Had the best sales ever at our business yesterday, but the downside of that was that DH and I had to work flat out for most of the day to pack up the orders (not that I'm complaining) and DS2's home ed work had to be pushed back till late afternoon.

Am just about keeping up with home ed and OU stuff. Not doing so well at the Flying, although I have been doing some ironing when DS2 has been working on his own (thank you, ConquerMaths). And DS2 is still earning 20p per chore for his savings, which means he has been unloading and reloading the dishwasher, keeping his room clean and making his bed.

We may be getting a new kitten in a couple of months' time. Have been on the phone to the owner this evening. We are so excited. DH even bought us a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate Grin.

Apologies for lack of personals. Am reading, though. Welcome to the newbies (Eyelet - I remember not sitting down at all when I had a baby. You are doing brilliantly, but please remember to rest too or you'll burn out).

Eyelet · 03/06/2014 22:39

Impressive but now suffering on sofa. Dc2 was a section and I can't lift any sort of weight but dc1 (3) had an epic tantrum in town after playgroup and I had to carry them back to the car.

Tomorrow, Thursday and Friday lists;
Work.

Eyelet · 03/06/2014 22:41

I should confess baby 1 is almost four and baby two is one so I have no excuse to still be wearing my maternity jeans and slobbing of an evening.

Off to raid the drugs - I have some codeine left over from surgery. Happy days.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/06/2014 23:35

Evening all,

Sorry, I've been AWOL too. Just busy.

Swan - I planted potatoes in a raised bed about three years ago, every year I think I've got them all out and every year they sprout into magnificent plants again, they are huge this year and we had a mini harvest on Sunday too, by rummaging around in the soil. I've left them in place to keep producing, hopefully.

Toffee - well done on getting the essay in. I got the result of my most recent module yesterday, the autism one, I passed Smile. Exciting news about the kitten.

Welcome to Eyelet and Veryseriousgirl.

Ta-da!

School run
Phone meeting re DS and statement
Assemble some new goals in the garden for DS
Pilates class
Food shopping
Unpack shopping
Clear out and reorganise fridge
Steam cleaning - cleaned fridge interior, door seals etc, microwave, then upstairs for round the edges of DD's bedroom windows etc.

Feet - how are you getting on with yours? I'm so impressed with mine, it gets places clean that nothing else seemed to touch, like the fridge door seals.

Swapped curtains from spare room to DD's room (DS moved in with DD a couple of years ago but is now feeling a little embarrassed about sleeping in a girls room so I agreed to change the curtains for his old stripy ones)
School run
Ballet/tap for DD
Dinner
Cubs for DS
Cooked big batch of pasta sauce to freeze.

Been having fun tonight, DD has been on my case to set her Ipod up to be able to text (Imessage) people, so I've spent a couple of hours setting up both DCs so they can text each other and us (but no one else). DCs are enjoying being able to send each other messages containing rude words!

ToffeeWhirl · 03/06/2014 23:50

Well done on passing your autism course, WhoKnows. Are you glad you did it? Do you think you learnt things about autism you didn't know before?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/06/2014 23:53

Thanks Toffee. I did learn quite a bit, it has helped me with understanding the assessments that DS has been having, but the structure of the course was quite frustrating compared to the other modules I've done. I'm going to start back up again in October, but not sure which module yet. How near to the end of yours are you?

BitchyVstheUFOs · 04/06/2014 00:17

Late night thinking is not a good thing! ah well at least the 1st load of washing for tomo is already on. Hmm wet bedding.

Right definitely going to sleep now. honest!

ToffeeWhirl · 04/06/2014 00:34

Who Mine finishes in September, so quite a way to go. Glad the content of your course was useful, even if the structure wasn't.

Bitchy - night.

Battery running out on this computer. That's a good thing. Bed.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 04/06/2014 07:48

No list for me today. I've tons to do, and have a list, but I know I won't get through all of it. I have tomorrow for the list to spill over into, as I have an appointment and some errands today too. Busy busy. Grin

But taking time out of all the chaos to meet a friend for coffee today, so that's something to look forward to. Smile

I will refrain from mentioning my kitchen, which I am not going to tidy before leaving the house today, which is not my usual tactic. The food bin needs to be emptied and I'm not up to it at the moment. Hmm

slackcabbage · 04/06/2014 08:27

Good morning everyone!

Rather humid steamy drizzly weather here atm and the G7 is on so the traffic/diversions were horrible this morning and everyone seemed v. stressed/aggressive on the roads. Our road is closed because of construction work yet again so no doubt we will be assailed by drilling noises all day again. Plus planes flying overhead. It's at this point in the year when I long for a country retreat! Grin

Was good for nothing last night (apart from making kedgeree - been looking for smoked haddock here for nearly a decade - and found it yesterday!) so must get myself in gear today.

Ta da:
ironed school shirt
2 loads washing on
dd's gym kit
rabbits
scary school run
bank for ironing lady/vet money
bought flowers for thank you present
prep for ironing lady

To do:
s & s
sort kitchen sink/dw
write thank you card
ring nanny of dd's friends re: summer art 'stage'
book art 'stage'
sweep rabbits room
brush rabbits
quick tidy through downstairs (still roughly OK from Mon)
school run at lunch time
lunch
hwk supervision/help dd with exam revision
corall rabbits
prep for vet
find memory stick
party photos on memory stick
take photos to get processed
sort boudoir
home office desk
girls' night with dd as dh working late tonight
more laundry

Hope you enjoy your coffee with a friend Alice it's good to take time out once in a while!

Good to hear the business going great guns Toffee

Good luck with scary list today Bitchy!

Go steady Eyelet [stern looks] Smile

Go steady too Engels [even sterner looks] Smile

Swan/Whoknows thanks for potato harvesting tips!

Congrats on passing module Whoknows and forgive me, you've already told me this, but is it the Karcher steam cleaner you have? It sounds wonderful!

Mercury enjoy your last teaching training lecture! I can't quite believe your course is nearly at an end already! I remember you starting it!! YOu have done brilliantly well to battle through to completion with everything else you have on your plate. I really admire you for it.

Swan > "bought myself some new shoes which fit and don't give me blisters and aren't trainers shock" this has to be the holy grail!! Envy My feet are permanently bound in Micropore at this time of year.

Big encouraging waves to everyone else!

Have a productive anti-procrastination day everyone!

Grin

MIL is coming round to look after the boys shortly whilst I go to the dentist (which reminds me - what did you decide, dizzy?). As a result, I have a 'ta da' list:

All washing up done and dried and put away
Washing on
Sink shined
Counters and cooker top wiped
Cupboard doors wiped
Rubbish put out
Recycling put out
Kitchen floor swept and mopped
Dusty cobweb discovered and dusted away Blush
Hall floor swept and mopped
Stairs swept and mopped
Room rescue in sitting room
Breakfasts all round
DS2 - handwriting and Maths done

Phew. Thank goodness for visitors.

feetheart · 04/06/2014 11:07

Lots of busy people today :)
I have:

  • Printed out some tenant-related stuff
  • All up and out
  • Washing on
  • Work meeting with DH to catch up and try to sort out a few things

To do:

  • WORK - invoicing and bank rec (now things are sorted!)
  • Hang washing (before bedtime unlike yesterday Blush)
  • Make choc and banana cake
  • Make ratatouille
  • Make bread
  • Easy dinner for DC as DH in London so back late

SC - I always freeze ratatouille as I make as much as I can fit in the oven - make Delia's oven one where you just shove it all in and roast it. It seems to come out of the freezer fine, maybe a bit sloppier but then I often use it as a pasta sauce or in bolognese to make it more vegetabley and reduce the fat content.
I've been wondering about Just too as she seemed to disappear very quickly. If you are lurking I hope you are OK
Also Buddha - if you are lurking there will be at least 5 MNetters and a collection of DC doing the Zoo Stampede on Sunday. Think we are meeting near the wolefs at some point :)

Right...work

CarpeJugulum · 04/06/2014 11:09

Morning folks.

Well, yesterday was... interesting. DMIL departed, but DS was solaced by his playdate. I may have done a crisis grab'n'dump (washing basket with anything out of place thrown into it and then stuffed in a cupboard) Blush but it was fine, and I did sort out the basket after it.

I also sorted out shoes (as I bought pretty new storage from under the bed), and hoovered the bottom of the wardrobe. I then collapsed coughing. Must add "hoover wardrobe" to my flying list! Blush

And I also started a cross stitch (this one if anyone is interested). I haven't done one since before DS was born, so it's slow going at the moment, but it's amazing how much more restful it feels, rather than watching TV and surfing on my phone.

Sadly today is work. I did empty the DW and S&S though so all is not lost.

Waves to everyone! Better actually do what they pay me for! Wink

Toffee 3 cats in this house and I still fancy a new kitten!
congratulations on the business doing so well atm.

We had a potential visitor this morning and I achieved an awful lot as a result, swept front path, dealt with recycling, laundry etc etc, dw. And she didn't come after all!!! Dh ate the homemade shortbread instead and enjoyed the nice clean kitchen and pot of teaSmile

done

three kids to school, although my organisation is now wearing thin after three days of having to get up first thing. When ds1 asked for breakfast I told him he could make it himself Blush

Bookclub this evening. Dunno even what I'm meant to have read Confused Must try harder.

CarpeJugulum · 04/06/2014 13:17

Just a random question that's been bumping around in my brain!

When you're doing the inevitable crisis clean because a visitor is due, do you find yourself doing weird things just in case? I found myself wiping out my cutlery drawer in case they needed a teaspoon the other day...

ToffeeWhirl · 04/06/2014 13:17

Swan - kittens are irresistible. Am so excited! Can't get too excited about the business - had an awful day the next day! Very bumpy ride.

Nothing wrong with encouraging DS1 to get his own breakfast - you are teaching him about self care Grin.

Dentist was fine. Just a filling, so am a bit numb now.

Tea break! [Snaffles some of Swan's delicious shortbread]

I am very happy Smile Smile Smile

Lovely vet came to the house today and declared the rabbits in tip-top shape, no teeth, stomach, or claw issues Smile. It's so lovely to have a peripetetic vet - much less stressful from rabbits p.o.v. than travelling in a car and then having to sit among scary cats and dogs in a scary cardboard box in a scary waiting room!! Second good thing: she will neuter them too (hadn't found a vet who I trusted to do this until now!) which will hopefully prevent them from dying early from uterine cancer as most un-neutered rabbits do.

Yes, very exciting about kittens Toffee

Carpe I think the only time our cutlery drawer get's sorted is prior to guests descending!! Ooh and I do love a bit of cross stitch but I can never get the back of mine to look as neat as it should.

Keep going bitchy! Brew

Thanks Feetheart I'll try the roasted rat version and freeze thereafter; as you say, really good for sauces too when whizzed up a bit

Big feathery waves to one and all!
