Can I use something in my steam cleaner for fresher smelling carpets?

Just that, really! I love my steam cleaner on my vinyl kitchen floor so I thought I'd try it on the carpets. They look great but smell yuck! Was thinking maybe a few drops of essential oils or maybe the fancy steam iron water...any suggestions?!

Personally I wouldn't try a steam cleaner on carpets unless the manufacturers instructions recommend it? Def don't use it if the carpets are woollen, it will shrink them.

Why do they smell yuk, do you have dogs?

It is for use on carpets, I've just never got round to doing it before (lazy!). We don't have any animals but the people before us had one. That was 4 years ago though and we had the carpets professionally done when we moved in (hate the smell of dog, so maybe I'm oversensitive to it?).

I put zoflora in my steam cleaner for everything. Lovely disinfectant and clean smelling rooms.

I use Half And half ironing water and tap water which makes the floors smell nicer, for the carpet I use neutradol carpet freshener, it's a powder you sprinkle on and then Hoover up, it's from pound land and smells great, takes all the smells away from the carpet (we're potty training) and makes the Hoover smell nice too.
