Anybody want to join me in a mega, whole house declutter?

I am desperate to have a clean and tidy home. It's always ruined my life and I always feel very lonely, partly because I can never have anybody over without a week or so notice to clean up! I am fed up of being like this and want to make a change for good. I know that the biggest step is to declutter, as it will make it so much easier to keep tidy.

I have delcuttered lots of times before, and I then end up filling it up again! I don't want to do this again! I want this to be the last time!!

Anybody up for joining me?

I have already done my girls room (They share a small double and it was always so full that they couldn't ever have space to play in it!). It is so much easier now, I finished it about a week ago but have actually kept it tidy!

I am now moving onto my Son's room. It's a TEENY box room with just a cotbed and one chest of drawers in, no spare space and I have an extra baby to fit in their soon as we are expecting again. Baby will sleep in our room for as long as possible but no idea where the baby's clothes etc will go! So iv culled his clothes and now have 2 spare drawers, and got an under bed drawer now which I can use although not really space to pull it out!

Anyway, would anybody like to join me in my mission? We could support each other and keep each other going? I have also strarted looking into flylady and hope to use some bits from there, but not follow it fully as I like to do my own thing a bit.

Have a huge bag to pass on to friend's DS.
Another bag for other friend's DD.

Sorted through all the boys clothes x 2 - have packed away stuff for DS2 for the future.
Don't think I need to buy either of them anything for quite a while.

Need to tackle DD's tomorrow as I know she's got some too small stuff I need to pass on.

Also did some toy repair/supergluing.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 06/06/2014 11:29

er.....JKS

do you think we're the only ones mad enough still decluttering?? Grin

sewed the damned leggings Grin hovered the downstairs Grin done a tonne of washing Grin

need to sort out my clothes AGAIN as loads of stuff doesn't fit properly /looks shite

ChaffinchOfDoom · 06/06/2014 11:30

do you have 2 or 3 dc? I have a dd and 2x ds Grin

JKSLtd · 06/06/2014 11:45

I think we are!Grin

I'm the same, 2 boys and a girl. So ds2 gets all the handmedowns lol.

Dd gets spoilt by family and has far too many clothes. Currently in a passed down dress that will only be worn today as it's too small already. She's a big girl!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 06/06/2014 12:13

today it's all about washing and line drying before the weekend deluge thunder lightening hail and general malaise

JKSLtd · 06/06/2014 21:22

Yep same here.

I've got halfway through dd's clothes, pile to give away already.
I'd like to reach the 'ideal' of just enough clothes to fit in the drawers/wardrobes.

Gave away the huge bag of boys clothes this morning.

So;
finish dd's clothes & pass on
Some gardening if poss
Finish current book

JKSLtd · 08/06/2014 19:50

Did some gardening - not as much as I planned to.
Didn't finish DD's clothes (easier tomorrow when she's at school).
Working on book :)

Tomorrow is my 'doing day' so hope to achieve some useful sorting/clearing out stuff.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 09/06/2014 09:48

what are you writing?

got lots odd stuff done yesterday, hovered the upstairs, pile of ironing, tidied kitchen, wiped down some cupboard doors thoroughly, hovered cobwebs in landing

warmleatherette · 09/06/2014 09:58

Haven't been on this thread for ages. But still decluttering! Am peeling film off the bedroom windows now - I put it there pre-kids in a "I am a minimalist, I do not need curtains!" moment of delusion. Then to clean the windows and tidy the balcony. Then...job-hunting. Sigh.

ROUNDandROUNDINCIRCILESMORETHA · 09/06/2014 10:07

I'll join you a thread like this will be more inspiring & less annoying than a thousand fly lady emails a day. I have started on my hall way today. X

Doingakatereddy · 09/06/2014 10:44

Please for the love of all that's holy let me join. My house just has these.. Areas of crap piling up and I can't seem to get shot of them!

We're moving in 4 weeks and there is NO way I'm moving all this crap with use.

Where do I start??

4littleones · 09/06/2014 11:09

I am also decluttering. but I feel like I have already been doing it for years. In fact. I HAVE been doing it for years because I kept making the mistake of buying more and accepting hand me downs that we realistically don't need.

now I have come to the conclusion that my problem is not hoarding but it is buying too much.

I have been good though and been on a no buying anything we don't need rule for about 2-3 months. I've also been steadily decluttering and giving away/selling a steady flow of stuff.

It is making life easier housework wise and have started paying a cleaner temporary while I deal with some heath problems and end of pregnancy. I have funded this through selling stuff so I feel it's justified. I physically cannot do it all at the moment and it's pretty depressing! I've got 2 more bags of girls clothes to list today and I've already been to the post office to post some cloth nappies I've sold over the weekend. It's time consuming but It's something I can do while sitting and resting so makes me feel less useless when I can't do the other stuff. Smile

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 09/06/2014 11:40

I did a car boot sale about 3 weeks ago and now need to do another, the first was brill, made about 70!

I tend to duplicate things I use a lot - I have 5 pairs of kitchen scissors hanging from the hooks over my counter

So I need to a) chuck b) charity c) car boot (again).

Bins are collected tomorrow so I will do a big clear out when I get home from work.

Towels - another area of duplication. It's only me and DD - I do need 3 shelves of towels - in fact, as laundry is the one area we tend to keep well up to date, we could cope perfectly well with about 2 sets each, about 3 hand towels, and about 2 guest sets. Right, that's my aim tonight, to pare down the towels.

Does anyone else have a problem with keeping the boxes things came in "just in case"? DD has about 15 shoeboxes, I have a lawnmower box and one from my sewing machine. I even have a free recycling bin they could go into but they are still cluttering up my hall...

JKSLtd · 09/06/2014 11:46

Welcome/morning all.

Chaffinch - I'm flattered but no, I'm just reading books! But I've had piles of to read for ages and I'm working my way through them to pass on/get rid.
Then I aim to stick with the library as they don't take up permanent space.
(Or maybe one day a kindle but I'm too old fashioned for it I think!)

Have tackled dd's clothes - big bag ready to give away.
I do need to buy her a few bits though as she's just growing like a weed!!

Also sorted through sailing stuff as the boys are on the beach with beavers tonight. And added some too small bits to the bag to give away.

Am now sat in surrounded by toys. Bit stalling. Much. Grin

JKSLtd · 09/06/2014 12:46

Meant to be 'not stalling'.!

Anyway have done lots of tidying, some stuff to give away/bin. But hungry so paused for lunch.

ROUNDandROUNDINCIRCILESMORETHA · 09/06/2014 14:11

Well did the hall feels much better was hoping to to lounge and conservatory but feel asleep. Shit. Will try again tomorrow.

Dreamingoutloud · 09/06/2014 14:48

Hi Smile
I need to join this thread, we're hoping to have a baby next year, only problem is there is nowhere to put it!
We've lived in our house four years and have accumulated so much junk it's unreal.

I only work part time and have no kids yet so it's really embarrassing that our home is in this state Blush I need to get on top of it before we bring a baby home and our world gets crazy!

I will go through and read past posts looking for hints and tips but just wanted to introduce myself.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 09/06/2014 16:56

from upthread.... the inspirational messages for me ::

'' look at a thing... if you don't need or use it, let it go... feel happy that you had your money's worth from it... pass it on for someone else to enjoy and use ''

I get so emotionally tied up to things, plus I am saving stuff for years ahead - is this realistic?!? will dd Really want my old handbags?? WILL SHE??

ChaffinchOfDoom · 09/06/2014 16:58

write one big master list of everything that needs doing. this has helped me remember while Im in the hall for example to quickly do XYZ

plus it's fun highlighting it when it gets done

4littleones · 09/06/2014 17:34

I've managed a fair bit of tidying today which is quite an achievement with a 8.5 month pregnant bump!

I've also sold lots and have a few more bits by the front door waiting to be collected.

does anybody else have laundry overload? I am always on top of washing and drying it. but it often then builds up into loads of piles of clean washing. and it escalates into a huge job that takes hours to sort out. I know I should just put it away every day but I just don't! This I need to sort out!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 09/06/2014 21:21

when you say parcel s awaiting collection - which co? is it cheaper than royal mail? have stuff to flog but need cost effective way to shift it

ChaffinchOfDoom · 09/06/2014 21:23

Im a bad washing hoarder too...its the folding/putting away I cant bear. yeurgggh.
so what's your due date? don't put your back out!! Ive got a 10 week old, the other dc are at school so I can only tidy when he naps...

JKSLtd · 09/06/2014 22:16

Mon night is my time to tackle the clean washing pile. Dh is away, I watch junk tv and iron/sort.

JKSLtd · 09/06/2014 22:17

I did lots more with toys - halved our play food & utensils. - bought a tonne years ago and we are not running a playgroup here lolGrin

4littleones · 09/06/2014 22:37

Chaffinch - I wasn't meaning a couier. I sell on local facebook selling groups (closed groups only though as open ones let all your facebook friends see what your selling and I don't like that). It's fab. Doesn't cost anything and people pick up from you.
I can't get my head around the paying to sell something thing - It just takes the whole point away for me.
You do get the odd timewaster which is annoying. But I don't wait in specially, I just tell them when I know I will def be home. Which is most of the time at the moment! I don't tend to bother in the holidays as we are out a lot of the time and don't want to wait in. It's pretty effortless and it sells fast if you price it right. I do now have stuff that doesn't seem to be selling though - trouble with local selling is that you need the right person to see the right item at the right time. But it is all shifting in the end.
