Mad Fledglings March through the Spring cleaning

BitchytheGreat · 28/02/2014 20:40

So here we are, March already.

So for those who don't know the fledglings is a long running thread. Some of us seem clicky but that is because we have been chatting on these threads for nearly half a decade makes everyone feel old we quite like fresh blood though so feel free to jump in and join us.

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new then trying to spend 15mins decluttering and the babysteps is the most. Some of us Bitchy can have scary looking lists. One word of advice ignore them. Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

To do
Hang out laundry (it's going outside!)
Ironing
Dust
Washing up
Collect DD from school

Drop dvd at library, due back today (watch dvd first?)

BBL

GoingGoingGoth · 03/03/2014 10:29

Arrgh bold fail

Jdub · 03/03/2014 10:33

Good grief! March! That's bonkers!!!
I have been pretty aloof recently, but have tried to keep afloat!! I really think that subconsciously my efforts, inspired by this thread, have rubbed off on my OH (despite him shrinking my best jumper in his enthusiasm to keep on top of the washing!- He has replaced it though).
Hope everyone's weekends were happy and productive.

CallingAllEngels · 03/03/2014 10:45

When he started doing it we tried to get him back in his own bed but after a few weeks and no sleep we gae up and just let him come in swan . I feel like because I'm at home this week I should have another go (at Christmas everything was so hectic it just didn't happen) but if DS doesn;t play ball before ext week I'm not going to persevere!

thinking smll steps is the key I find, and making it fun. So loud music when hoovering or changing beds, rewarding myself with 15 mins on MN and a coffee and biscuit, breaking the day up into chunks, just focusing on doing 3 things rather than staring at a never ending list.

Ta da
Caught up on MN
Nearly finished unpacking (one more bag to do)
Phoned DMIL
Made a shopping list
1st load of washing in td
Swept kitchen floor
Emptied plastic recycling

To do next
Unpack last bag
Food shopping
Put away dry washing and put next load on
Hotspot - lounge. Set the timer - it's the only way I'll do any of it.

If the house is ship shape this afternoon....finish watching Series 4 of Downton or put on Bambi/Dumbo for DS so I can try and finish reading Life After Life.

I've decided we're having lasagne this evening. Now wondering what other veg packed meals we should have this week. Want to go easy on the meat (we often bulk things out with veg or beans) after steak/italian/DM's chicken casserole this weekend.

Swanhildapirouetting · 03/03/2014 10:55

done Bedroom attack
stripped our bed
changed pillowcases
brought all dirty laundry downstairs from our bedroom
put a wash on
made a pile of rubbish in the corner of the room
put some clean underwear away in the drawer where it is meant to be!

now I've run out of steam, and talked to a friend for a while on the phone...Confused it was nice to hear that my children leave the house much earlier than most people's and that not everyone goes through the children's homework with a fine toothcomb.

Going out to meetup at 11.30 so need to spend 15 more in our bedroom then get changed.

thinking101 · 03/03/2014 10:59

Thank you, thank you for your kind words swan and calling Ive had a few tears, I'm ready to pick myself back up. I dont work outside the home but I do study. I just feel a bit well pathetic that I cant manage a small three bed house and two kids. I feel like i let them down. I think I will go to GP have bloods checked. I dont want medication.

I agree with the co-sleeping thing, my DS(8) always just wanted his own bed. DD(2) wont sleep next to anyone, she thinks it is a game but will gladly be put down in her own bed and sleeps well. I bf them both in the bed when they were tiny. I think my snoring is a factor.

Ok three things:

Laundry x 3 - get things washed as priority needed for the week
Sort laundry into bags in master bedroom
Dust and hoover
Change bedding (must its overdue Blush)

I'm going to give myself an hour.

GoingGoingGoth · 03/03/2014 11:30

Thinking remember the house doesn't get untidy in a day, so it won't be put right in a day. Try to set achievable targets, but definitely stick with the day out as a reward.

Done
Windows (cleared condensation) and opened them
Hung laundry out
Litter tray
Ironing (small pile)

Going to have a quick walk to the library to eat some fresh air, before getting something else done this afternoon.

BitchytheGreat · 03/03/2014 11:39

ta da
lunch fo ds - fuck no drinks
deal with the JWs who came to the door. Interesting conversation but no i am not interested as my soul is doomed by my beliefs.Grin
1 load of washing
5 mins decluttering in my room
empty bucket from porch from car washing friday
deal with dead plants waiting for returning to the ground
speak to ex re ds' summer plans
get into a heated discussion about the olympics
catch up with a friend who has the worst timings for wanting a catch up
5 more mins decluttering in my room not that you can see where i have been yet
find the stuff needed for some phone calls.
try to sort out ds' appointments
sit on hold listening to an automated voice shout at me about everything that can be done with a smart phone which i don't fucking have and won't be getting because i hate having a mobile
change hospital appointments
put a load of towels on to wash
put my clean clothes away
drink more coffee

Right i suppose i should go get ready for work. so much that needs to be done but really can't be arsed.

Thinking i was recommend a B complex suppliment recently as I have been collecting one bug after another. Pharmacist said that it might help with me feeling tired and run down all the time. I take it with a general multivitamin which stops me ending up aneamic as I tend to low enough iron levels to feel rubbish but not low enough for them to want to prescript/recommend iron suppliments. The B complex has made a noticable different. Although be warned apparently it can make your pee illuminous in colour. Bit like beetroot turning it red then Grin

I feel better Ive talked to DM. Im about to start my small list.

goinggoth well the house is in a lot better shape actually than this time last week thanks to ths thread. The downstairs just needs a blessing type clean and is clutter free actually so thats one thing.

Bitchy you have hit the nail on the head. I have been foudn to suffer from low or bodlerine levels of B12. I do not have the intrinsic factor that helps me absorb something...it can be masked by appearing anaemic. Mine is never low enough to treat regulalry with injections of b12 (as supplements are less likely to get through re factor). So I have been wondering if it is this. I have suffered from PND and prone to bouts of mmild depression. I worry a lot and I have no need to really. I have been tod m thyroid is borderline in the past. Maybe but I beat myself up too much, ive eaten terribly this last week and done no exercise.

I must get on.

feetheart · 03/03/2014 14:13

HUGE relief here this morning as DD got her first choice high school although it isn't our catchment school. I know she probably would have been fine at her second choice (again not catchment) but she will now go up with most of her friends and the transition will be SO much easier for her because of that.
The visit to cake shop after school and the macaroni cheese planned for dinner can now be a celebration rather than a commiseration (planning for every eventuality me)

ellie – glad DS got his first choice too. Only 101 ways? Not trying hard enough at all :)
Hope going back to bed helped?

As I haven't been on at all over the w/e I will see if I can manage a round-up with apologies in advance for those I forget.

Buddha – ran a HALF MARATHON. Huge respect and well done, a fantastic achievement (and I saw the time on the running thread – bloody hell, I would kill for that sort of time and probably die trying to get it!)

Just – coped with more than most of us put together and seemed to have chopped up and disposed of a small forest as well.

Cybermam – has a busy month coming up and has been adapting Flylady to fit. Think that's the only way to do it.
I LOVE soda bread

SC – has been glad to see signs of Spring and has played Playmobil schools with DD – top parenting award from me

Blueandwhitelover - has been enjoying her shiny sink

Toffee - did a lot of walking over the w/e whilst trying to prepare for her DH's birthday. Hope he is well enough to enjoy it.
I'm with you on the medals for standing and freezing in the park although DH deserves one for this w/e – he took DS to play tennis on Saturday and to cycle round and round and round the park in the freezing cold yesterday.
I've bookmarked edible cell cake.

Bithcy - had HUGE lists as usual and stayed up far too late trying to kill finish off blanketgate.
Have taken your labelling advice re cell onboard for when we get there.

Alice – IS NOT BAD but has a huge amount of stuff to deal with thanks to twattish STBX. The plans to make your house yours sound perfect and a great way to gain control and move on, what is it about the best revenge is to get on and enjoy your life although I have my fingers crossed for you that karma turns up soon.

Peanut – didn't go for coffee and cake but dealt admirably with minis and pooch

Dizzy - spent a LONG time in the Science Museum and has been dealing with the fall-out from Forest School which sounds brilliant. I know DS would love that sort of thing.

Swan – has been making chicken pie, dealing with thoughts about DS2's needs and reading gardening books :)

Hemlock – rejoined us and brought cake :) She is training her 14mth old (good plan) and is out of the house for at least 12 hrs every week day so was busy sorting the house at the w/e

Engels – had a w/e in the UK, saw The Mousetrap and now feels the need for vegetables. Ratatouille done in the oven is my fast veggie kick. I can eat it straight from the oven tray but if it makes it to a plate then it's usually paired with couscous or rice and haloumi on top. >

Thinking – fully understand the state of the house as a barometer to how you feel and the staying up late to get some 'me time'. Try to be kind to yourself too though, children are hard work and 2 yr olds even more so. I think I only started to feel like I was regaining some form of control once both of mine were at school and it's still quite fleeting at times!

Jdub – has been aloof but afloat!

Now need to post this quickly before anyone gets up to anything else :)
Enjoy the rest of your Mondays people.

to do
Not a clue - will figure it out shortly. Grin

ta da
spoiled myself rotten today. New haircut (and wash and blowdry) that I absolutely love. New makeup. Fancy patisserie cakes for my DD that has been having a bad week (dropped them off as a surprise for her at her work). And sinfully delicious burrito for lunch. Yay!

sanschocolat · 03/03/2014 15:56

Hello everyone! Gosh this thread is moving fast!!

Had a lovely day in the sunshine planting seeds yesterday and then felt brave enough to tackle a new driving route (half the inhabitants of this city depart during school holidays leaving the roads beautifully clear). Then dd had the opportunity to try out a new choir which she loved (hopefully an opportunity for new friendships given recent events). They sang songs in Gaelic, Hungarian and Singhalais (sp?) which reminded me of the benefits of living here!

But I felt really unwell in the evening having suffered another wierd gastric 'attack' of whatever it is is causing attacks and ended up lying on bathroom floor (have to have exploratory op but keep putting it off which is stupid I know but phobic about hospitals/plus ridiculously panicky about leaving dd because dh is always having to jet off somewhere at last minute). Need to get a grip [she says trying to sound confident] [whimper] but still feeling ropey today and doc away for a week's holiday.

Alice (would love to have something bigger to get stuck in to like proper veg patch) but we have a small town garden which is in half shade; so most of the stuff I grow from seed is destined for containers/pots on the (sunnier) terrace. I've had a break from it for a couple of years because garden walls all need attention like everything else in this house and so will have to be pulling all plants up at some stage to do that: which is a bit demotivating.

However, dd (having shown very little interest at all previously) is just at age where she is very excited about growing things so going to plant runner beans and courgettes for her, plus try and grow humungous pumpkin but it will mean a battle with slugs and rabbits first! Planted nicotinia seeds yesterday (love the scent) and lobelia (pendula varieties) for flower pouches high on wall which cannot be "explored" by hungry furries. Also intending to grow miniature carrots, toms and radishes in containers. None of it costs very much. If you are interested look at this site and there are special sections for container gardening.

When you are going through such a difficult time (and your dh sounds incredibly insensitive talking about his "new family" in front of the boys) and you are stressed yourself and worried about your dc, I second what Swan says - gardening can be incredibly therapeutic. If you want a few tips on how to start (no worries if you understandably have other priorities atm) then do pm me! I'm no expert but wd be happy to pass on the basics. There's loads of info available on line too, some examples here and here Good luck with everything x

Hope you are feeling better today blueandwhitelover!

Dizzy Impressed by your 7 hrs in the Science Museum and love the sound of your dd mud-surfing, although not so great doing the washing afterwards!

Sorry you had such a stressful Sunday morning Swan: sensory diet, ABA, music therapy etc all sounds very challenging on top of everything else (when do you fit it all in?) but v. worthwhile. Love the sound of that gardening bk, and the chicken pie! All this school stress is madness isn't it? I'm absolutely dreading having to make dd's secondary school choice. Sounds as if you made a v. good one though.

Happy birthday to your dh Toffee I hope he is well enough to enjoy it. (If it's any consolation, you may remember that my dh chose to celebrate his 50th birthday by deliberately booking a wisdom tooth extraction on the day which made celebrating, er, a little difficult!!). Not nice when it is not your dh's choice to be ill though. Hope you are not going down with it too.

Agree about medals for mothers patiently shivering in playgrounds!!

Peanut did you get out for that well deserved piece of Cake yesterday?

Just congrats on getting rid of tree!! And dealing with irate neighbours (as if you haven't got enough to do already)

Engels arf at Ninja toddler - glad he has recovered! And that you enjoyed your trip to Blighty. Hoping to get there ourselves this week (also half term) and have similar veg cravings upon return!

Waves to Ellie, glad to see you are taking it steady! And great news about your ds and school choice and (I imagine) to have that weight off your mind!

Thinking101 I'm so sorry you were feeling so low today Thanks but glad you are feeling a bit more positive now. I can really identify with what you say about staying up late to get some time alone. Don't be so hard on yourself - I think groundhog day chores are intrinsically depressing. I think (but don't always manage to carry it out) that the only solution is to ring-fence time in which you do something for yourself which gives you fulfillment/satisfaction and DON'T feel guilty about doing that. After all, if you are happier/more fulfilled then everyone else benefits from that too. So keep at the baby steps little and often - accept that it takes time to sort stuff out - but keep consistently doing bit by bit. And in the meantime, studiously ignore the rest of what needs doing and do something for yourself instead! It will give you energy to tackle the other stuff. Bloody hell wish- I could follow my own advice sometimes-- Confused Also, how are your vit D levels? (Although confusingly, med advice keeps flip-flopping about this but I feel better for taking it if that's any help.)

Many congratulations on running the half marathon Merry hat's off to you. Great cause too!

Cybermam Good luck with your busy day and hope PTA goes well!

Hemlock that sounds live a v. heavy schedule you have there - hope you can ring-fence just a bit of time for yourself too

Big waves to Castlelough (how's the horse?)

Hope you can catch up on sleep tonight Bitchy (but know projs such as Blanketgate can get totally addictive). Must remember that line next time JW's come to the door! Grin

Goth arf at pro'craft'inating Grin And thanks for saying "it" Wink

Great to have you back Jdub been wondering how you were getting on! Glad flying rubbing off on your dh too!

Big feathery waves to Whoknows Blue Feetheart Honu PA Pushme Nicknacks and everyone else I've missed!

sanschocolat · 03/03/2014 16:03

x posts!!

Feetheart what a fantastic round-up. How wierd - sorry - posted at exactly same time as you - wanted to catch up before heading off to UK! Brilliant that your dd got her first choice of school, must be such a relief for you!! Like the sound of your 'rat' recipe!

Alice great to hear you have been spoiling yourself a bit - you deserve it!!

BitchytheGreat · 03/03/2014 17:18

I survived worked but discovered that i have fucked up a whole heap of stuff. Asked for some extra training as it is the sort of job where they throw you in at the deep end and then pick up the pieces. Hmm Bosses are lovely though and it is a minor paperwork issue so hopefully easy enough to fix.

OP posts:
Swanhildapirouetting · 03/03/2014 17:58

Feeling like death warmed up again Hmm too much driving, too much walking and too much very strong coffee at meetup! Lying down now for a short spell to recover.

done
met lovely neighbour
drove ds2 to and from school
dd insisted on making more fairy cakes as she ate some of those destined for school mates
ds2 has a high pass for Grade 3 violin (although he failed his scales by I mark Shock[actually not shocked as he didn't practise them once Hmm He is pleased but beginning to realise that not practising his scales has cost him a Merit.
gave ds1 nourishing bowl of lamb stew and brack (separately)
dh has discovered I failed to put a new black bin liner in the bin and dd has thrown some cake mixture in there [eeugh]
bin out
2 loads of washing
2 loads of washing hung out including rugby kit

feetheart well done on dd's place, what a relief it is

SC I planted just one lot of seeds last year that survived, marigolds and they are still going strong. Such a pleasure. I've put my name down for a council allotment as I don't think I can bear the lack of space here any longer. It may be several months before I get one, and probably miles away but it will improve my driving and at least one less thing to say when I'm 60... I wish I'd had an alotment and learned how to plait onions. My neighbour does this, it is amazing to see!

SC I haven't done any of those therapies btw..just beginning to think maybe I should have, oh yes and fish oils Confused

BitchytheGreat · 03/03/2014 19:03

We got a little benefit from the fish oils but it wasn't worth the battle to get ds to take them in the end. Occassionally he will ask to have some more but it does rather prefer him mulitvitamin which really helps him during growth spurts. I probably should look into those therapies too swan

Right now i am working on the last bits of the fucking blanket. I am more then ready for it to be finished now. more then ready.

OP posts:
BitchytheGreat · 03/03/2014 19:30

Right, i am going to try to stick to my turn the computer off early thing so i don't lose hours to the internet balck hole so here goes linkies for the 4th day of march...

babystep 4

Tuesday is planning day what you doing this week, what are you goals, do you have a meal plan?

Missions

I know that the focus for March is supposed to be putting shoes on, but actually I need to just focus on 15mins decluttering to try to get to a point where there is a possibility of getting on top of the chaos.

Don't be fooled. I may have crazy long lists but life overwhelms me a lot with what needs doing. There is so much that needs doing that has been abandoned for too long and it stopping life from working. It just never seems like I can get to a point where i am in control atm no matter how much I do or how hard I work. There is no winning. Not if i look at the bigger picture. If I look at the smaller picture there is progress. I just have to remember to focus on the smaller picture and not the bigger picture. Anyhows, now that i have rambled completely, depressed myself and probably scared the shit out of everyone else. It is most definitely time to shut down. Night night. see you tomo.

OP posts:
ToffeeWhirl · 03/03/2014 20:19

Can't get either of my boys to take fish oils, Swan, and really can't cope with anymore battles. In my experience, even the expensive ones have an underlying fishy taste which both my DC can detect in spite of all the strawberry/lemon/orange flavour added to disguise it.

DH's 50th today. He really appreciated the coffee machine, although he is worried about how we'll fit it into our small kitchen. My suggestion is that I get rid of the pile of papers in the hotspot and put the machine there instead. Am hoping it will stop the hotspot flaring up again Hmm.

He is too ill to go out tonight, so we are staying in with a ready meal and sparkling wine instead Grin.

Ta da

DH's birthday present and cards
School run
DH to dr - given antibiotics and steroids and booked in for blood test
To work for the rest of the morning
Quick shop
Home for late lunch
TA here with work for DS1
Sat with DS1 for his first online lesson
School run
MIL arrived for tea
Made tea and sandwiches
Birthday cake and 'Happy Birthday' - DC helped
DS2 did an impromptu magic show
Caught up with OU work whilst DH and MIL watched old film
Dinner for DC (massive failure for DS2 because I bought different chicken nuggets, which he wouldn't eat)
Washing up
Tidied up kitchen
Opened bottle of sparkling wine

DS2 is on fruit-and-veg strike again. Actually, he is on strike regarding anything that isn't one of his familiar foods, which limits the menu to very few items. I don't know what to do about it. Really don't want to go down the CAMHS route with him too.

Sorry for me, me, me post. Am reading and running tonight.

MercuryRising · 03/03/2014 21:27

I am being rubbish at keeping up with the thread alreadySad Today was the first day of my placement in Foundation and I am exhausted. Dp started a new job today and is staying away so I had to run around after the dcs this evening instead of moaning about how tired I am - very inconsiderateWink

Swanhildapirouetting · 03/03/2014 22:12

ToffeeThat sounds like a lovely contented birthday for dh, despite the illness; I hope you print out that description of ds2's magic show for a memory box or have photos. Ps. dd has never really eaten fruit and veg, except juice and is just starting to show an interest now at 12. She has a particular horror of the wrong texture, say gravy or fatty meat or soups with bits in them. I would say cherry tomatoes, granny smith apples, brocoli, strawberries and carrot sticks are the only things that cross her lips veg wise, and she certainly has no craving for them. And will eat them usually because I've reminded her, or because there is literally nothing else as a snack or when we are eating in front of the telly. She will quite often refuse to eat things when they smell wrong. I think some children just are more fastidious about what they eat. She likes salads but I think that is because she likes mayonnaise and French dressing Blush

mercury how I wish I could get my children to listen to Harry Potter..ds1 has read them all, but hated having them read to him, and the others just point blank refuse because "we've seen the film" Sad

done
wiped worktops
supper was frozen fish
dried rugby kit
put dd to bed, needed some tlc
did a poster on the Crusades with ds2 he is v enthusiastic about posters now for some reason Hmm and loves doing borders and coming up with fancy slogans...but doesn't yet do them entirely by himself

I'm tired, but too bored to go to bed!!!

Here's a thread for you Swan if you are bored Wink Grin

Funny about dc and foods. DD will eat a reasonable (fairly limited) range of veg and fruit but has to be constantly cajoled and encouraged which is wearisome in the extreme. To my bewilderment she doesn't seem to be that keen on potatoes whereas I used to live on them as a child (Irish mother). She also has a horror of soup with unidentified bits in it. But she raves about the "green" soup she is served at school, whereas if I served soup with even a hint of green in it at home, she would run out of the room Confused.

Brack brings back memories Smile!!

V. exciting about allotment!!!

Congrats to your ds2 on his Grade 3 violin exam!!

Arf at you scaring everyone Bitchy. Definitely not depressing but v. pragmatic and wise. I find completing even one tiny seemingly insignificant chore, actually does make a difference the next day. Glad work went well!

Glad you survived your first day of placement Mercury too! I am in awe of all you get done on top of heavy work schedule.

Glad your dh managed to enjoy a relaxing birthday celebration despite being ill Toffee

Having been flopping about in pjs all day recovering, I now don't feel tired although off to bed in a minute so I can hopefully make the most of tomorrow. Felt guilty that dd had to spend a long morning stuck indoors first day of the holidays but in fact she must have been extremely tired because she fell asleep too! Found her flat on her face asleep on the rug amidst a pile of Playmobil!! Dh took her out for a ride this afternon and then we [cruel parents emoticon] insisted that she had an hour of French tutoring. One good side of her school is that they work them hard in term-time but never burden them with hwk during the holidays so she has already finished the bit of reading she had to do! Phew!

G'night all.
