Mad Fledglings March through the Spring cleaning

BitchytheGreat · 28/02/2014 20:40

So here we are, March already.

So for those who don't know the fledglings is a long running thread. Some of us seem clicky but that is because we have been chatting on these threads for nearly half a decade makes everyone feel old we quite like fresh blood though so feel free to jump in and join us.

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new then trying to spend 15mins decluttering and the babysteps is the most. Some of us Bitchy can have scary looking lists. One word of advice ignore them. Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

Afternoon all (well it is here!) Got a bit discombobulated by clock change yesterday.

Oh no Toffee - sorry to hear the boys are 'hors de combat' again - they have had one cold after another poor things (as have you and dh). Is your house damp at all? Do get your house checked for moulds if so (can be invisible). I know it sounds mad, but used to work as a groom when I was a student and all the horses got very ill with respiratory infections over a five month period. No one could understand it. Vet came to do tests and there was a form of mould growing on the hay and in the stables itself. I remember blokes from lab saying that similar moulds could occur in domestic settings too. Anyway, had to have it all steam blasted and sterilised etc and they all recovered. Sorry - definitely not comparing you all to equines Grin - just stuck in my mind ever since. And your dss do seem to have been in the wars all through the winter.

Whoknow thank you for links. I wonder if Ellie is up to running thread in April as it didn't sound as if convalescence was going too well when she was last on here? I would volunteer but am travelling for Easter hols from 6th to 19th April, then back for Easter weekend when we have visitors until end following week. Can volunteer for May and/or June though - travelling again July/Aug.

Blue Just Whoknows Dizzy like the sound of all your spring/Easter/horticultural activities and your photo Blue!! (Your lawn looks superb - ours is all moss atm!)

Hope your eye is OK Just (mine has recovered thank heavens!)

Yes, your Sunday sounds really lovely Whoknows!

What does MIA stand for Dizzy or shouldn't I ask? Wink

Swan hope your dd survived her school trip, cockroaches and all!

No mothering Sunday celebrations here yesterday - it's celebrated on another date in Europe I think (can never remember when!) and dd usually makes something under guidance from school. Can't say we make a big deal of it generally. Dh did bring me a fried egg on toast in bed on Saturday morning though! Grin

[I know I'm awful but privately I was thinking, I would far prefer it if you carried the laundry paniers up and down the stairs to the basement or vice versa, or carried your shoes in the hall upstairs and put them away, or put the ladders away after you have used them, or occasionally got loo rolls or kitchen roll from basement and replaced them when they have run out.. or occasionally threw your worn socks in the laundry basket, not on the bathroom floor alongside it ... rather than breakfast in bed which you are- cooking for yourself anyway.. but that's just me being really mean isn't itBiscuit]

Rest of weekend was a bit trudge-worthy; apart from half day in countryside which was lovely but bit of a disappointment at same time (for various reasons). And nice roast chicken supper in evening. Majority of time spent on supervising dd's exam revision which is getting more gruelling as times goes on. DD had dreaded dictée this morning - I found it really, really hard (and she's only in year 5 of primary - gulp). I swear it was at what used to be A-level standard in my day back in Blighty (and I only sat O-level!). I've obviously improved a bit since living here, but dd at 10.5 yrs is now at the point of overtaking my formal/grammatical knowledge of written French and she has already started correcting my prononciation arrgghh - had better get back to the books/lessons if I want to keep up!

Big waves to Bitchy Ellie Feetheart Eustacia¨Peanut Castle Honu Goth Dizzy and everyone else I have missed!

Ta da:
up especially early because ran out of time yesterday owing to hour change and forgot to put on dw last night

cleaned out ruddy hamster [grrr]
tidied up downstairs including hideous playroom (must sort during Easter hols)
finished ironing final 2 shirts of dh's
ironed white wash for dd - 4 uniform shirts/vests/gym top/tennis whites

To do:
so much it makes me feel sick to think about it (a good 40 % I have been putting off and had plenty of time to do it before and didn't - so only have myself to blame!!

Must go - dh has just popped in for lunch - and he is travelling rest of week so only opp to see him! Byyyyeeeee!

BlueEyeshadow · 31/03/2014 12:57

Thanks SC - it's a brand new lawn replacing enough gravel to half-fill a skip! Back lawn is all moss too.

Hope your boys are recovering, Toffee.

Swanhildapirouetting · 31/03/2014 13:59

SC re: mould - I'm not sure it is always the reason... In our house there are two cornice areas by the leaking chimney breast where there is now brown mould coming through the plaster, in dd's and ds2's room -despite attempts to repair the flashing - I do need to look into what is going on Blush. However, I think theircurrent colds are just spring colds, I think at this time of year the changes in temp are reponsible for germs multiplying, earlier in year I think immune systems are low anyway. Our house is very well ventilated unfortunately-- due to lack of double glazing and an open chimney stack..

Personally I always get ill over Easter and Christmas not due to mould but stress and wildly fluctuating room temps...

SC I remember loving dictation, so much nicer than spelling tests, at least there was a point to it. No such thing as dictation any more in English schools unless you count copying down what teacher is saying..

done
counted money in church
bought some groceries
first thing drove ds2 to school earlier, finished homework at last minute. He went to school fine. Nice chat with him in the car. I tried out a social story on him, to do with not criticising his Dad's handwriting Confused and he argued over every little element of the story, so maybe my social stories aren't quite obvious enough and a bit too poeticGrin We are finding it hard dealing with him atm. I came home and sat down with dh and we tried to think of some new strategies to tackle his reactions to things.

I don't know whether it is just the clocks going forward but today we feel EXHAUSTED.

Not helped by the way the phone line went dead again..and we had to deal with more engineer phone calls before dh could start his business day.

Garden is looking a bit more frothy and lush now, very heartening. Natural vitamin d levels are beginning to kick in and raise my mood, I hope!

BIL came to lunch yesterday, he had been cycling in Richmond Park all morning and said it was beautiful there.

Swanhildapirouetting · 31/03/2014 14:04

SC speaking of action plans and scariness thereof...hmm, must do something to tackle paperwork chaos here. I discovered to my shame that the local library has closed down, and I still haven't taken the last batch of books back. The debt collectors are now on to me. I think I can return them to central library but still it is symptomatic of just MUDDLE...
I think the fact that you even have an action plan is sign of higher powers.

so tired, feel like I was awake at 5.30 real time, which I was, now I am think I am going back to bed for 20 mins so I can face badtempered kids and ds1's Maths tutor later..

sanschocolat · 31/03/2014 14:26

Swan don't be fooled - I'm a great writer of action plans - it's actually working through them that is the problem!!

Feeling sick at prospect though because of visitors deadline (Easter w/e) and going away beforehand. Wibble.

I'm with you on the fatigue today. Went to bed too late last night and was up too early. Cracked the whip all morning. Ate too much lunch with dh an hour or so ago. Now the call of the duvet is very strong (and I hate sleeping during the day normally as feel so wretched afterwards). DD's tutor here after school in an hour and a half so will have to stick it out.

Swan/Toffee no indeed, sorry, didn't intend to come across as if mould only reason (quite rare I think) but worth considering if coughs and colds recurrent/persistent as can be invisible which is a bit scary I think. Teenage or soon-to-be teenage dc often go through a period where they are outgrowing their strength too so probably more likely to be that, plus, as you say, wierd weather temp fluctuations. Anyway, whatever the reason, hope your boys feel much better soon Toffee!

OUr house extremely well ventilated too owing to large holes in walls Wink

I'm with you on the paperwork chaos as well Swan got so far in big home office clear out but only inasmuch as triaging stacks. Still need to go through stacks in details ifyswim. Hideous job. So much muddle still in evidence!

Must stop rambling now and do something undemanding like pairing socks ...

GoingGoingGoth · 31/03/2014 14:48

Done! Now can get back on with the housework Wink

Mad Fledglings March through the Spring cleaning
sanschocolat · 31/03/2014 14:58

Goth that is so beautiful!!!

GoingGoingGoth · 31/03/2014 16:02

Thanks SC Blush it's not that big, but I really lost momentum at the end.

Don't know how Bitchy managed 2. Think I'll just stick to individual squares for a while.

ToffeeWhirl · 31/03/2014 16:09

Wow, Goth, that's stunning!

SC / Swan - re mould conversation - I don't think it's that. We used to have damp, but it's been sorted out. If it's anything more than a seasonal thing, it's more likely to be the fact that neither of my boys eat enough fruit and vegetables, despite my best efforts. But I will bear the mould theory in mind.

DS2 was on the sofa all morning, but his temperature suddenly shot up and he took himself back to bed. Now dosed up with Calpol and reading 'Tintin in America' to himself.

DS1 doesn't seem as bad, but he's tired and headachey.

ta das

Swished and swiped in bathroom
Emptied bathroom bin
Unloaded and reloaded d/w

elliepac · 31/03/2014 16:25

Afternoon all Smile.

Am finally feeling more like myself after the whole concussion business and recovery from op is going well so i feel the only way is up.

And in turn with that theme goes my flying and. I promised bitchy i would run the april thread so will be back in a mo with the linkies before i go to my niece's birthday party.

elliepac · 31/03/2014 16:28

And here it is.....

April thread.

Swanhildapirouetting · 31/03/2014 21:14

That is stunning Goth looks like a piece of modern art, I would frame it!!!

done
Maths tutor went well - ds1 from a 5b overall is now getting 7's in algebra.
lots of washing up
fryup for supper
Peasant's revolt
dd's ingredients for cooking tomorrow, she organised them, I complained about shedding of sugar and flour everywhere
rugby kit
PE kit
more washing
nap

feeling a bit fed up this evening but I see I have achieved more than I thought. How was school meeting Toffee? any usefulness?
I was looking through ds2's history exercise book and felt a bit fed up with it all...pages and pages of illiteracy, an elaborate picture of a carrier pigeon (beautifully coloured in Shock and then all our carefully scribed homework. What IS the point? He clearly cannot write down what they do in class properly.. Still he seems to show of a Horrible History type interest which is something..Anyway he is still in a good mood generally if a bit manic/loud.

Ds1 has discovered a new television channel called London Live Hmm

ToffeeWhirl · 31/03/2014 22:09

Meeting was very polite and with an undercurrent of unsaid words, Swan. I think we all knew it was pointless. We are all playing the game now whilst we wait for the SA to take its course.

'Carefully scribed homework' sounds familiar, Swan. I have to do that with DS1. Do school know you have to do this?

Popping over to the new thread now...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 31/03/2014 23:28

I know that feeling Toffee - I am being very circumspect with DSs school at the moment, which feels really wrong when we have been working together to help him for so many years. Dreading Parents evening.

ToffeeWhirl · 01/04/2014 00:48

You are doing the right thing though, WhoKnows.

I did a lot of smiling and nodding today.

dizzyday07 · 01/04/2014 01:23

Sans - MIA = Missing in Action. Grin

I used to be a groom and just before DS was born (left when pregnant) I worked on a thoroughbred stud breeding racehorses.

slackcabbage · 01/04/2014 11:21

Dizzy have responded on other thread!

PeanutPatty · 01/04/2014 19:30

Hello!

Popped in to say that I'm doing eff all flying as on my hols. Back soon to join in the scrubbing, hoovering, laundry cycle.

We are all over here!
