So which way round is the 'nice' way round for loo roll to be hanging. And *why* is it remotely important?

Just wondered after a heated debate (!) with Fil, who was in the army you know, and seemed quite put out that anyone would be so ignorant as to not know the correct way for loo-paper (or as I wanted to say 'convenience stationary') to hang.

So, at the risk of exposing myself as a complete pleb, please dear genteel Good Housekeepers, enlighten me?

fullmoonfiend - nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I live in a house of 4 loos and don't own one single loo roll holder. They sit on the floor or on the radiator or on the cistern.

alexh · 03/08/2006 10:12

competitive loo thread - excellent

3 loos (soon to be 5 - the mother of all basement building projects going on).

No loo roll holders - sit on top of the loo or on the floor beside the loo.

And that's it. Now COLOUR I do have strong views on - its got to be white......

CountessDracula · 03/08/2006 10:24

oh god isn't life too short?

I mean who even looks at the loo roll ffs?

I just lob mine on the back of the loo

CheesyFeet · 03/08/2006 10:26

I would love to say that our loo roll hangs over the roll - but the truth is that an empty tube hangs from the loo roll holder and the roll in use sits on the side of the bath.

Anyone keep their spares in a doilie-dolly thingy?

themoon66 · 03/08/2006 10:46

Oh yes.... white only. DH once brought home a pack of peach coloured stuff, which seemed to last for ages just coz I hated it.

themoon66 · 03/08/2006 10:46

And yes, my MiL keeps her spares under a crinoline lady crocheted thing.

TambaIsBadBadBad · 03/08/2006 10:49

Mine just seems to be whereever it rolled to the last time one of the kids dropped it... its usually within reaching distance of the toilet though!

mawbroon · 03/08/2006 11:10

Mine is on a holder that sits on the floor, so no worries about the hanging issue.

BUT what if you've bought bog roll with little pictures on it or perhaps the new Andrex puppy stuff - if you don't hang it over the top then THE PUPPIES WILL BE INSIDE OUT and someone would have to call the RSPCA and you would never be allowed to keep Andrex puppies ever again.

themoon66 · 03/08/2006 11:18

I wasn't even aware that bog paper was produced with pictures on it!!!! And there was me, thinking coloured was too racy for my house.

southeastastra · 03/08/2006 11:47

my sister has some really nice white with silver stars loo rool, too nice to wipe your bum on

fullmoonfiend · 03/08/2006 11:52

pmsl at you lot with your convenience stationary origami! Oh for a world-class pyschologist...

But still no-one has been able to tell me why it has to hang that way down. And why I should care!

Would the silver not come off on your arse southeastastra?

mawbroon · 03/08/2006 12:05

Isn't the internet great!

But it doesn't really answer the question does it!!

fullmoonfiend · 03/08/2006 12:19

Oh thank you mawbroon!! I love H2g2 but i always forget about its exsistence

''Evidently bourgeois lavatorial etiquette vis-à-vis sanitary stationery demands that a toilet roll is hung 'under', ie with the flap 'wallside', if one does not wish to betray one's lower-class roots.''

Cor, I'm posh and never even knew it LOL!

alibag · 03/08/2006 12:50

It has to hang over the top, imo. I do change it when DH puts it up 'wrong'. It's an aesthetic thing for me (!) However, my mother's reason is that it is unhygienic if you have to touch the wall whilst scrabbling for the end of the roll.....

prettybird · 03/08/2006 13:05

If you get patterned loo paper (although I'm normally in the white camp, I am rather partial to the M&S "fishes" loo paper), then it needs to be hung with the paper "over the top", otherwise you are looking at the unprinted side.

nutcracker · 03/08/2006 13:07

I hate it if it's hanging down the back.

I used to have to fold the end into a point when I worked in a hotel. I thought they were joking when they first said I had to do it.

riab · 15/08/2006 13:48

white, tesco own brand, lives on top of the radiator or on the floor (top of radiator conviently at the right heiaght next to loo)
