So here it is the dreaded January thread. The thread of resolutions and good intentions for the year that you are lucky if you see through to the end. Welcome to the start of 2014!!

A quick note for newbies, this is a long running thread. We do like new blood around here. However, we do ask you to be respectful that for a lot of us just getting off our arses is not going to help and to avoid suggesting this. We all know life is more complicated then this. So here we do things a little differently. A little bit of flying and a lot of chatter and moral support. Feel free to jump on board and join us in flying.

For those who are new to fly lady she recommends a three step program:

  1. Get those babysteps into a habbit
  2. Get rid of the clutter.
  3. Get that deep cleaning done.
Don't worry if you think you not doing it right but not getting up to it. Some of us have been here for years and we are still decluttering. Because clutter has a nasty way of multiplying if you take you eye off it, especailly if you have kids.

Fly lady ethos tells us a few things that I want you to remember:
No perfectism this is harder then you would imagine
You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

So jump on board and lets get started.

Oh and I forgot the proper introductions. "I'm Bitchy and I shall be your guide to the fly lady system for January" better buckle up as things normally get a little crazy when it is my turn to take control. good luck Grin

Oh yes, I forgot that the other one I thought was bollocks was to get up before the rest of your family to get a head start. The fat fairy clearly doesn't have young DC who frequently decide that 5-5.30 is a good time to start the day Wink
So, ta da:
Beds made
S&S
D/w unloaded and reloaded

Currently lying next to DD, waiting for her to fall asleep for her nap.
Once she's asleep, I've got to go and Hoover the kitchen and wipe all the surfaces. ILs are here at 11, eek!

BitchytheGreat · 01/01/2014 10:24

Meh you are all getting ahead of yourselves. Leave yourself something to discuss tomo which is the get dressed day. I don't any excitement about sink shining. The fat fairy would be most disappointed. Shiny sinks apparently make the entire house tidier... yeah i don't get that either

still swearing at laptop

Sorry, meant to say, I definitely agree with ellie, you have to pick and choose the bits that work best for your family Smile

Btw, as part of what works for me, I have the home routines app on my iPod, i find it so useful and motivating. I'm just wondering if anyone with an android has anything similar as I have a friend who would find it useful too but doesn't own any ithingys.

WhispersOfWickedness · 01/01/2014 10:28

Bitchy, I am the same about the sink too Blush For me it is making my bed! No idea why, but if I do that (I have a big quilted bedspread that goes over everything), I'much more motivated to fly in the rest of the house Confused

RueDeWakening · 01/01/2014 10:29

The last few years have been difficult what with one thing and another, but I really need to get back to flying, so will be shining my sink shortly (once dh gets out of the sodding shower so I can go in!).

Three kids and a dh who works from home mean I am positively drowning in stuff and seem to be the only one actually trying to get rid of any, despite dh talking the talk. Dh tends to say things like "we need to clear out this cupboard" then sit back and wait for the clearing fairy to make an appearance. Advice welcome!

BitchytheGreat · 01/01/2014 10:43

Well we all know that Babystep 17 is my nemesis. If I can get that one sorted the world works soooo much better Grin alternatively i need to embrace my vampire tendancies and just find a job which requires me to work nightshifts. Not sure how that would work with ds but something has to work....

Right really am going now. Until friday my favourite mners

I have been fretting about money, I have an extra £400 to find this month, which we have sitting in dps bank (he actually has money in his bank for once) however I also have all the other bills to pay which I can just about scrape together and then food an fuel, which will leave us skint. I also need to find 120 for Avon as one of my customers is finding times hard but owes £90 and can't do the returns owe back thing as its orders from 4 campaigns back. And I also need books for my OU course so I have asked if anyone can lend until march on a certain social network site.

House is still a tip, I will do all the flying bits required for today though, but I do have to do my first pregnancy test of the year today, always do one on the first as its the easiest day to remember. Also need to update my diary and get more brochures sorted.

dizzy sorry your new year didn't go as planned I do hope things start looking up for you.

engels so happy someone else is ttcing on this thread.

Still in bed but got to get up soon as dd is off to the match & we've got a visitor coming after lunch.

However the house is fairly tidy as I've done the missions this week. Dh is currently emptying the dishwasher & tidying the kitchen

Also using this thread to see if my Xmas bane has changed - I couldn't get it to change back last night.

ToffeeWhirl · 01/01/2014 11:34

Happy New Year everyone. Amazingly, we all slept in till 10am! I must say, I am very much enjoying NOT having very young children who wake up at 5am (with apologies to those of you who do - I remember those days only too well).

Have done pancakes with maple syrup for b/fast again. Need to break it to DS2 that he can't expect this on school days.

Good to read the missions, etc. As the house is in a pretty tidy state at the moment Shock, I'm going to attempt to keep up with the missions, starting with the hall declutter (much needed, as littered with muddy boots and umbrellas at present). And have just reordered Magic Eraser for tomorrow's mission of wiping marks of the walls.

Spending another day with best friend here at home, so tomorrow will be the day to get back into my routines. Somehow have to re-educate the children (and myself) to wake up for school hours again.

If I have any new year resolutions, it is to improve the DC's eating habits. I have just read this and am going to put its rules into practice. Started yesterday by making pizza with DS2. I determinedly didn't make any encouraging noises about him trying any of the vegetables, then, to my surprise, he took a tiny bite of a mushroom to see if he would like it. I'm sure if I'd encouraged him to do that, he wouldn't have.

dizzy - sorry you didn't have a good start to the New Year ((hugs)).

MerryBuddha · 01/01/2014 11:36

Did try to wish everyone a Very Happy New Year last night. But it was at the time when it was all kicking off at MNHQ. So I am now instead x

Currently still in bed, my lovely DH has redeemed himself, as he has been up since 7 and cleaned up all the mess from last night, and provided a cooked breakfast for all the dcs.

My New Year Resolution is to eat and drink clean until race day. So no caffeine, refined sugar, crisps, alcohol. Also to drink more water. And to try to stop moaning and complaining so much, therefore try and resolve problems/resentments in a more positive ways. So some big ones this year!! I would ask you to wish me luck but think I will need a small miracle to stick to these.

Whisper I am with you, there is no way I am get up before the dcs, who get up at 6 (not as early as yours) as that would be the middle of the night for me.
But I always make the bed and try to shine my sink as I think this does make me feel I am on top of things, even if the rest is piling up! and look horrendous.

Thank you Goth for last month, and good luck with this month Bitchy. I have to say I am loving this thread, I hate housework but you have all made it bearable the last couple of months x

To do
up and showered (dress but like most without shoes)
make bed
shine sink
S&S x3
breakfast and large glass of water
15 minutes porch
15 minutes my bedroom
w/m

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 01/01/2014 11:40

Morning all! Feeling surprisingly fresh, so marking place to start baby steps today. Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 01/01/2014 11:44

Morning all,

A lazy morning here, DS was up as usual by about 8 despite not going to bed till nearly 1 last night, the DCs were more lively than the adults last night despite being only 9 and 7). The rest of us have gradually got up over the course of the morning. DH is still not feeling well (been under the weather since Boxing Day). Pouring down with rain. Can't see us doing much today. Houseguest is still asleep upstairs too.

Diet related New Year Resolutions here too, DH and I are overweight (DH is also diabetic), the DCs are skinny things but snack too much and fuss around main meals. I keep trying to curb the snacking, but the habits are so hard to break. Toffee - that book looks interesting, just read the blurb. I decided a few years ago to sit back and not be heavyhanded about fussy eating and it is slowly but surely working with DS, however DH gets cross and starts making random threats about eating everything on their plates which pisses me off because it goes against everything I am trying to do, which sounds a bit like that book. Also, they just won't do it and then what? Empty threats, grrr.

NickNacks · 01/01/2014 11:46

Good morning January!

My New Years resolution is to also keep on top of things. All things. Including but not limited to housework, finances, being a better mother, being a better childminder and losing weight. Oh and more sex.

So far I have

I am peeking my head round the door after a long time away... Happy New Year Fledglings. I need to get Flying again and I know this is a place that will motivate me, so I'm to shine my sink and have a look at zone 1.

done
most decorations are down and dumped on dining room table
One load in washing machine

to do
Put decorations into loft
Hang laundry
Dust

MercuryRising · 01/01/2014 15:00

Just about to leave the library after making reasonable progress. I thought I would take the opportunity to post a quick to do list for the rest of the day in relative peace. So:
Reload wm
Take down Christmas cards
Hang out washing
Fold up dry washing
Hoover downstairs (if dp hasn't already done this)
Spend cosy evening with dpSmile

CallingAllEngels · 01/01/2014 15:05

listening to Glen Miller while I take down the Christmas tree and decorations. DS and DH taking a nap.

Am planning major declutter - have been staring at the bookcase and thinking about a donation to school library. It's just stuff, right?

GoingGoingGoth · 01/01/2014 15:52

Engles my head says yes! it's just stuff, but looking at my bookcase I know there are some books I'll never get rid of. There are some I've been hanging on to with the excuse that DD will have them eventually.

Haven't been for a walk (as it started raining quite hard)

But

Done
Windows
Put important dates on this year's calendar
Got DD to start Thank you cards.
Got down cards, & DD turning them into gift tags

Will probably hold on to tree a little longer, as it's in a corner and not too disruptive.

BBL

StuntNun · 01/01/2014 16:02

What is the point of shining your sink? I could shine mine all I want but it's still going to end up covered in bits of egg shell and coffee grounds as soon as DH makes his breakfast.

AliceinWinterWonderland · 01/01/2014 16:24

Can't shine my sink. It's some nasty rubbery coated material that stains very easily.

Castlelough · 01/01/2014 17:07

Happy New Year all! Welcome to all the new fledglings, and happy waves to the old faithfuls! Smile

Am loving all the new year resolutions!

NickNacks I'm especially smiling at one of yours and adding it to my list!

Gossip I'm also ttc (%231) - almost 3 yrs with 3mc to show for it, and apparently nothing wrong with either DH or I. Confused Anyway hopefully 2014 will be our year.

Other new year goals are:

*To lose weight (2 stone) - joining slimming world tomorrow for the first time! Wink

*To learn how to crochet

*To finally get our mortgage and finish building our house. So sad this is taking so long.

*To fly better, and to cheer up! Smile

Castlelough · 01/01/2014 17:08

Sorry my post should read ttc DC1 and we've been trying almost 2 yrs.Blush
