I mean the stuff looks creased to me. Has been blowing on the line all day and so I've either folded it and put it away or hung it up but am not convinced I will be able to stop myself from ironing it before it's worn.

Jeans went in the ironing basket, you can't not iron jeans can you ?

I would be concious that someone had seriously wasted their time and energy for no good reason every time I got into bed.

For me it's like when the cleaners come in and fold a shape in the end of the lavatory paper in a hotel. Ridiculous, superficial waste of resources.

Life's too short. This is not a rehearsal.

spidermama · 09/07/2006 20:03

Line dried I love because it smells fresh.

NotAnOtter · 09/07/2006 20:04

if you line dry then stick in tumbly for 5 mins and straight onto hangers you dont need to iron jeans.
When you have as many clothes and sheets as me you HAVE to iron things to fit them in the house. I dont iron but i do pay to get them ironed!

moondog · 09/07/2006 20:04

You wouldn't say that after a night chez Moondog SM.
I do agree re ll paper in shape of a rhododendron however...

Why DO they fold toilet paper over???

I iron as little as possible. DH wears uniform shirts which he usually irons himself, and my 11 year old son irons his own shirts for school too - most days, although I have noticed him sneaking an unironed one on occasionally, lol.

NotAnOtter · 09/07/2006 20:16

sally - i got some off my nan too- why dont you get them like that now?

I'm a non ironer too apart from dh's shirts which he usually does himself now! When we stay with mil however, she irons everything except socks. My clothes almost shrink with shock at the sight of the iron! I do line dry everything I can though, didn't quite manage nappies today as weather forecast was ssoooooo wrong

1Baby1Bump · 09/07/2006 20:38

i dont understand those that iron!!
why make more work for yourself?

  1. get it out the washing machine asap after it has finished.
  2. take it to line and put the garment back in the right way. give it a good shake to make it as flat as poss (most creases come out here)
  3. hang trews by waistband, tops upside down.
  4. when dry, most items will be creaseless. fold as you take them off the line and put in washing basket.

at this point, washing basket usually gets left in bedroom, waiting for contents to be put away for approx. 2 days in which time the clothes press themselves.

the only things i iron are going out/evening top if its a bit creased still.
dh will iron a shirt if he needs one to go out in.

sil irons everything but she leaves things in the machine wet and doesnt fold off the line.
you MUST fold off the line.

moondog · 09/07/2006 20:40

i HAVE GORGEOUS SECOND HAND (ALTHOUGH ONE WOULD say 'vintage' these days) linen monogrammed ones that i bought for about £3 each in France.
Lovely for outdoor tablecloths too.

FrannyandZooey · 09/07/2006 20:45

I used to have to iron as part of my job. I did teatowels, bedding, vests, the lot

It put me off for life, I haven't ironed anything for over 3 years

I have one skirt that has to be ironed, a beautiful beautiful skirt. It is languishing at the bottom of the wardrobe

mrsnoah · 09/07/2006 20:56

ooh there's nothing more wonderful than getting into a freshly ironed bed with cool linen sheets. Smells and feels like heaven. Worth the drudgery of ironing it. I change the beds and iron every monday just for this! ( I have a very quiet life )!

brimfull · 09/07/2006 21:01

please don't iron jeans it looks seriously naff!

body heat irons out all the creases

DarrellRivers · 09/07/2006 21:03

definately a non-ironer myself, saves time

never use tumble dryer, hang properly to dry and fold from clothes horse.
DH irons his shirts himself hurrah

expatinscotland · 09/07/2006 21:04

spitz the clothes w/water before you get in the shower. pull them straight when you get out.

the clothes will be a bit less crinkled.

irons are for doorstops.

laundrylover · 09/07/2006 21:09

Complete non ironer here but as obsessive at hanging out or radiator drying as 1baby1bump hence my MN name!
Anyone else get jittery watching other (ironing) people hang things out badly?? Or will not let anyone else hang out their laundry even the day after giving birth?? Hmmmmm maybe I'd quite like ironing eh?

DarrellRivers · 09/07/2006 21:13

yes , my mum never hangs my washing out right and then complains about me never ironing.
don't care

wordgirl · 09/07/2006 21:19

Okay, so if you're not going to iron you need to:-

  1. Sprint to the washing machine the minute it's finished (what happens if you're out by the way?)
  2. Have a tumble drier.
  3. Spend ages pegging clothes out in a very particular manner.
  4. Ditto folding. Surely it's easier just to do a bit of ironing while you watch TV on an evening?
laundrylover · 09/07/2006 22:18

You don't need a tumble drier but you do have to enjoy pegging and hanging!! OK for me as it means I get out in the garden and can spot kingfishers and do a spot of deadheading in peace.

crunchie · 09/07/2006 22:28

I have never ironed, except as someone down there said 'For weddings'

Dh wears shorts sometimes, they are not ironed - they are the non-iron ones though, but when you are wearing them with shorts it doesn't matter. He usually wears T-shirts. School uniform is all non-iron these days too. I do have the odd thing that I know looks better if it is ironed, but I cannot be bothered.

So do I getthings out the minute the wash has finished, do I fuck, Do I dive into the tumble dryer at teh instant its stopeed, hell no. Do I peg things out, ummm never. DO I care Do I hell. I do nothing special and do you know, no one has ever come up to me and siad ooooh Crunchie, you look a bit creased, are you a lazy slattern or what?? and no I cannot hear the whispers behind my back either. ANd to those that iron, GET A F**KING LIFE

poisson · 09/07/2006 22:29

i rinon a lot
when iw as a teacher i lIKED ironed kids

poisson · 09/07/2006 22:29

nitty were you ireond ats hcool?

FrayedKnot · 09/07/2006 22:29

No I agree.

I don;t iron in teh winter because tumble dried stuff doesn;t need it but how can you NOT iron line dried stuff?

It stands up on it's own when I get it off the line.

Please can you explain the mystical pegging out methods you are all using?

laundrylover · 09/07/2006 22:39

When it's hot and sunny turn down the spin speed on your machine or use a different prog so that stuff is a bit wetter when you hand it out.
I'm not claiming that my clothes look starched and pressed but they're def not crumpled. As has been said trousers hang from the waist and tops hang from the bottom hem and you must NEVER, EVER hang clothes OVER the line but this is OK for bedding and towels!
By the way I don't use softener but surely if you do this is meant to stop creasing??
