What will happen if I turn new fridge freezer on quicker than the manufacturer's booklet says?

Hi

MIL (with dementia) doesn't live with us and her fridge freezer now only has the fridge bit working.

I have ordered a new one and will be there for the delivery and an hour or so but then have to go.

If I turn it on after the hour will it be really bad and I'll have ruined it or is it OK to do that?

I can't rely on her to do it as she eithe won't remember or understand what I am asking and anyway I would like to check that it works properly before I go.

Anyone know the answer? I have read that you should wait 24 hours, 4 hours and 1 hour (last one if it has been transported upright).

You have to let the gas settle (but I'm not sure why.....)

Littleredsquirrel · 30/10/2013 17:57

ok just googled and apparently you have to let the oil return to the compressor otherwise it will damage the fridge.

Thanks Littleredsquirrel, I have something about that in the back of my mind about gas too. I'd just like to know what damage I'd be doing if I did the deed.

BTW, MIL wanted us to get the old one repaired (it's over 20 years old). Makes you think about how attitudes have changed now. That idea didn't enter my head!

Damm. I'll have to fill the fridge and go back later in the evening I guess. Thanks.

you have to leave it to settle for longer, I think. ours saud 12 hours...

PigletJohn · 30/10/2013 18:52

best to have a look at the makers instructions.

Assuming you have not got them yet, you can look on the manufacturer's website, or email them with the model number.

Ii think it is 24 hours for a FF.

PigletJohn · 30/10/2013 18:53

btw if the old one has a frost-free freezer that has stopped working, it is probably just choked with ice inside the ducts, and if you unplug it and leave it empty with both doors open for 24 hours, it will thaw out and work again.

Clargo55 · 30/10/2013 18:55

Ours got delivered last weekend and it only needed to stand for 2 hours.

BasilBabyEater · 30/10/2013 18:56

I did this once

The drainer thing at the back of the fridge filled up with evil-smelling water. It was vile.

Worked OK afterwards though.

My DF bought a new frost-free fridge freezer, ignored instructions about letting it stand for 12 hours and switched it on straight away. The frost-free bit didn't work, so he ended up having to defrost the fridge a few weeks later. much more hassle than if he had just followed the instructions in the first place.

Thank you all. Mumsnet people know everything!

I will read the instruction book and not ignore what it says. I promise.

It came and delivery guys switched it on briefly to check it worked. We just left enough stuff out for supper and will return in the morning with food and turn it on for MIL.

Hey all so i just got a fridge freezer and it was delivered on its side without thinking i switched it straight on i did turn it off soon after remembering the let it sit rule.
But i'm worried i may have damaged it already. My question is can i still let it sit or have i ruined it ?
