I keep seeing people mentioning this.

Which part of the supermarket do you get it from - vinegar or cleaning?

I am being really thick I'm sure but don't want to end up making washing smell of a chip shop Grin.

hmmm, i'm not sure either. i saw someone on here mention it to descale coffee machines, so i bought some white malt vinegar from the food bit. haven't dared use it yet though.....

LIZS · 13/06/2006 21:17

With cleaning products. It has a low odour btw !

Ulysees · 13/06/2006 21:24

I buy mine with vinegar? I use half and half water for windows.

Alipiggie · 13/06/2006 21:38

In both cleaning and vinegar section here and yes it's great for descaling as well as windows :o

Blackduck · 13/06/2006 21:40

good for loos too (with borax)

helsy · 13/06/2006 21:40

I bought the malt stuff and it's WRONGBlush - made everything smell like a chippy. Think it worked though...........
I still haven't found the plain white vinegar in cleaning or vinegar sections of our shops.

PiccadillyCircus · 13/06/2006 21:49

Gingerbear · 13/06/2006 21:53

You need ASDA for white vinegar.
Tis good to use for fluffing yer towels too.

PiccadillyCircus · 13/06/2006 21:56

I know DH uses white wine vinegar sometimes - maybe there's some around somewhere.

I use white vinegar for cleaning anything and everything, nappies, towels, carpets, upholstery, windows, descaling the kettle and sink, cleaning the fridge....
Dh fell 'up' the stairs carrying coffee last year. It stained the cream carpet but after a couple of doses of white vinegar and water with the spray mist you wouldn't know now.
I buy it in Asda vinegar section.

Great stuff, it really is.

Aero · 19/06/2006 14:01

So how do you use it for towels etc gb? (Still working on that pic btw).

I use it neat on limescale which gathers on my taps. I soak cotton wool and use an elastic band to secure the bits that would otherwise fall off, leave it overnight then rinse off.

Never tried with windows, but happy to give it a go - do you just dilute it 50/50 with water and clean as normal?

And for carpets? Does it leave a vinegary smell?

MrsDoolittle · 19/06/2006 14:04

Put it in the conditiner compartment of your washing machine. It's the build up of detergents that can make towels crunchy, white vinegar help dissolve it.

CarolinaMoose · 19/06/2006 14:11

how much do you put in MrsD?

MrsDoolittle · 19/06/2006 14:28

A good dash. Probably as much as I would conditioner.

ChaCha · 20/06/2006 07:41

For getting all the horrible gunk off the base of the taps.
I soak it in cotton wool and put that round tap base. Is amazing what comes off!

Now soda crystals...that's another story! :o

hana · 20/06/2006 08:19

vinegar is also good for cloth nappies
my local tescos doens't stock white vinegar in the quantities that I need !

FlameBoo · 20/06/2006 08:33

I was told the other day that value vinegar works just as well as white - for both windows and nappies.

I think you need to give the nappies an extra rinse to avoid chip shopness...

I have only ever used white vinegar (dunno if it is malt or wine, just the first clear one I grabbed Blush) - never ended up chip shoppy

shazronnie · 20/06/2006 08:35

I think it was expat who makes shower spray; I bought some white vinegar yesterday but can't find the post of how to make it - anyone else know? (Or are you back expat?)

h23 · 20/06/2006 09:02

it's good for bath toys that have gone a bit slimy too. put them in a bucket with water and 'some' (ermm, a good dash?) white vinegar... gets rid of all the mould.

Cappucino · 20/06/2006 09:21

it's called distilled malt vinegar in Asda

I've been thinking for some time that expat should be paid a fee by mumsnet to write a downloadable cleaning e-book

I'd buy it

kiskidee · 20/06/2006 09:44

non cleaning use - dilute it half and half and use on toes that are itchy because of athlete's foot. prevents it from breaking out. I suppose you could also wash/wipe shoes with it too to get rid of the fungus.

note: do not use it when the skin has broken as it will not burn.
