Is June the new January? - the Fledgling Flyers are doing their flaming best

Welcome old and new fledglings to the June Fledgling FLYers thread! Smile

Thank you very much to castlelough for leading us expertly through May - I shall try not to be too haphazard with June, although I make no promises Wink

If you're overwhelmed by clutter and general household grub then join us as we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system or languish in the naughty corner hoping to do better tomorrow Grin

As usual, we will be following the Flylady three-pronged approach:

  1. Baby-steps (a daily step to establish routines)
  2. Then baby-steps + 15 mins daily decluttering
  3. (And once decluttered) babysteps + daily missions and maybe even detailed cleaning in the weekly zones

For more information have a look here, although to avoid a cluttered inbox, we advise not signing up to the Flylady emails. The basic principle is little and often and don't worry about perfection (no chance of that here!).

Don't worry if you are behind; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

All the links for the babysteps and missions will be posted here every day and we'll all be here to cheer each other on and chat our way through the month.

Thanks bitchy, that's more interesting than I could manage!

I assume you have peer-reviewed studies to support that assertion? Wink

I've taken some exercise [parked the car a bit further away from Beavers, and heaved a few tables around Blush does that count?)

Healthy supper of meatballs, greenbeans, chickpeas, red pepper, an orange a banana and lots of cheese. No alcohol - one taste and I will be undone and want to wash down my meals with white wine every night.

Have started ds2 on Harry Potter and Order of Phoenix (reading aloud) in vain hope he might read it to himself if I stop midchapter. I read it 5 or 6 years ago, it is funnier than I remember but not especially easy to read aloud - lots of long drawn out sequences which are nice to read to yourself but when you are reading to someone else you find yourself thinking, Hurry Up Woman, Get To the Point. However, with my new hat on as surrogate tutor to phonetically impaired ds2 I keep noticing all the conveniently long and complex words she uses like "supine" or "spiralled" and wanting to underline them in red for ds2 (oh dear) The joy of reading indeed...Blush

WhoKnows I love Peacocks. I have a horror of uncomfortable shoes or shoes I can't walk in however smart they look.

ToffeeWhirl · 19/06/2013 22:59

Has there been a discussion about touchtyping that I've missed? I can touchtype. In fact, it drives DH mad when I type because I'm so fast . I learnt from some old computer programme in my 20s, then had a job writing book descriptions where I had to type all day. I learnt pretty quickly then. Can easily type without looking at the keys.

On the other hand, I have never learned to drive, which would probably have been more useful.

DS1 and I are sleeping downstairs with the kitten tonight, because kitty is so unsettled. Am not sure what sort of sleep I will get. And am a bit apprehensive because there was a huge house spider wandering around in this room the other night and, even though my neighbour put it out for me, I don't like to think there may be others.... .

CHBitchy · 20/06/2013 00:14

the best peer review Pmpy - an mn based review.
Was thinking about it the other day. Swan there is a whole load of low carb (ie only carb from veg) recipes on a thread somewhere. will see if I can find a link. I might not post much anywhere else on mn these days but I do like a good lurk sometimes.

CHBitchy · 20/06/2013 01:06

Low carb recipe thread

MercuryRising · 20/06/2013 06:33

Hi all.

Sorry I have been awol for a couple of days. It was DS 7th birthday yesterday so I have spent the last couple of days chasing around getting ready for that. Here is my list for today and I will be back tonight when it is quiet at work to catch up with the thread. Hope everone is ok, big wing flaps to all:

Nap ready for tonights night shift
Dcs to swimming lessons

Trazzletoes · 20/06/2013 07:13

I've been AWOL too due to being at actual work but I'm back!

pmpy I KNEW it would be Sam's assoon as you mentioned corned beef! You can't go there and not eat it. Yum! We have one in Leeds too. Plus I used to work in that big building on Chapel Walks in Manchester across from SAMs and The Grinch (another favourite).

I hope Toffeekitten has had a good night after all.

I can touch type too, a combination of Mavis Beacon and being refused a dictaphone at work. Am not terribly fast though.

J has an appointment at hospital today to get signed off from radiotherapy so hope that goes ok and then hope I can get some flying done this avo. No idea where to start though! Have been keeping up with my exercise though a couple of glasses of alcohol has thrown me off my game a little.

superfluouscurves · 20/06/2013 07:41

Morning all!

[shudders at thought of 6am Shred]

[cheers up again at thought of corn beef hash]

Trazzles Great that Joe is being signed off from the radiotherapy today!! It must have been gruelling for you both, you've done brilliantly well to get through it and re-start work too.

Right - have woken up full of energy for once (alcohol always does the trick Wink - so need a list...

A belated "happy 7th birthday" to your ds Mercury Hope he had a lovely day!

Bitchy thanks for water reminder

Swan are chick peas considered low carb then??? [hopeful emoticon]

Swan am beginning to develop a horror of uncomfortable shoes myself - go through the hideous blister stage every year when one switches to no socks/tights - plus seem to have put weight on my feet Confused Blush - getting altogether too old!

Hope Toffeekitten was OK overnight Toffee

Waves to Goth Doris and everyone else.

Right, have woken up feeling quite energetic this morning (alcohol always does the trick Wink) and have deliberately cleared a whole day for chores so need a list:

Ta da:

Have a productive day everyone!

CHBitchy · 20/06/2013 08:21

Everything I have read suggests chickpeas are not low carb SC sorry.

superfluouscurves · 20/06/2013 08:23

Bum. Thanks Bitchy Just wondered because we eat a lot of them. Same re: red and brown lentils. Healthier than white bread though I imagine.

CHBitchy · 20/06/2013 08:39

yeah I suspect so. I guess it depends on if you are trying to be low carb or low glycaemic. Because the 'allowed' foods are very different. Low carb way tends to suit me atm if I can stick to it and not cheat. It is just really hard to get your head around eating a lot of fat and for me the huge amount of veg needed. I think Low glycaemic might be the best way forward for me but I do like how I feel more balanced on the low carb. It was recommended to help prevent burn out. Can't say it has helped though but then I don't think I was taken into account when this advice was issued nor do I think my burn out is anything other then the result of me simply doing too much

I couldn't sleep last night. was nearly 4 or 5am before I crashed. I suspect closer to 4 then 5am based on the amount of light. Ellie I had the weirdest dream just before the alarm went off. I was trying to put sunscreen on your dd so she didn't burn. She had the cutest sun kissed freckles. And this bee kept landing on me. no matter what I did, I could not get this bee to go away and leave me alone so I could complete the task. I was getting more and more stressed over this bee and then stress by the fact that your dd was trying to help get rid of the bee and I didn't want her to get sung. It was definitely one dream I was very glad for the alarm clock to stop.

superfluouscurves · 20/06/2013 08:51

Bitchy arf at surreal bee !! Grin Those stress dreams can be very realistic/disconcerting though!

Thanks. I obviously have a lot of reading to do with regard to diets. Despite what yesterday's horror list of food would suggest, I normally (like you) can't stomach a lot of fat. Do eat loads of veg though.

Was just thinking that I could possibly contemplate low carb if pulses were allowed. Delicious bread products are a big problem here!! Grin

fireandblood · 20/06/2013 09:15

woops just jumping in now june is not my month. very naughty but time to give it another bash its just soooooo hard with two rascals at my feet forever!!Blush hope everyone is good!

fireandblood · 20/06/2013 09:22

To do putting it down for myself

  • take sheets off and new on
  • put tumbledryer on
  • empty dishwasher
  • put washing on
  • hang out washing
  • make lunches
  • nursery run
  • make card for a bridesmaid

keep it to that just now

BlueEyeshadow · 20/06/2013 09:30

I could never manage low carb in a million years! Just generally eating less of everything and cutting out the crap worked really well for ages but now I'm struggling cos I've got used to eating more again. Hugh F-W in the Grauniad the other week was recommending eating less bread in general, but really good bread when you do. Is that an approach that could work for you SC?

DorisShutt · 20/06/2013 09:31

Morning all.

So, DS has a cold and was very clingy first thing. He was demanding to go to the doctor's to be cured (thanks for that Dr Ranj! Hmm ) but he settled for me "phoning" them and getting their advice. DH was a bit bemused, but soon twigged. Grin

The advice was Calpol, Karvol and lots of playing with his toys. The Calpol is just glycerine cough syrup rather than actual Calpol, but it's amazing what a placebo will do Blush

We're probably the only house that qualifies Calpol with
"orange" - vitamins,
blackcurrant or apple - glycerine cough stuff or
"strawberry" - actual Calpol.

Anyway, in respect of actual flying, I'm going to attempt to deal with washing (does this ever end?!) and tidying my boudoir of shame. Trouble is that I've got stuff "hidden" in my wardrobe for DS's holiday, so I can't work out how to move it so he doesn't find it. I may have to tidy my stuff by moving it onto the bed and then stick everything away when he is napping or asleep tonight.

I've left Brew on the bar for those with a hangover in need! Wink

GoingGoingGoth · 20/06/2013 09:40

Morning all

Blue I like the idea of only eating 'good' bread, I presume he meant whole grain? Problem is I love most breads and pasta and pulses I'm a carboholic.

Last day at work this week Grin and a later start GrinGrinGrin. For some reason we're in for an extra earlier hour Monday to Wednesday, and as I'm trying to walk each way, it means I have a very rushed morning and a 12 hour day.

So the question is, do I do my weekly bleugh tomorrow or just wait until Monday?

I've been keeping on top of the laundry this week and managed to wash DD's winter quilt too.

GoingGoingGoth · 20/06/2013 09:44

Bugger, hit post too soon.

Trazzle Grin re Joe

Ellie hope DS feels better today

Toffee hope you/kitten slept well last night

CHBitchy · 20/06/2013 09:51

goth based on the 12hr day, I would switch it around so that you do the home bleurgh today as it will be more manageable and more likely to happen with your particular set of life circumstances.

ToffeeWhirl · 20/06/2013 10:18

Trazzles - am so glad that Joe has completed his radiotherapy.

Doris - that's hilarious about you pretending to phone the doctor and handing out pretend medicine. My 7-year-old son has the same thing about me needing to get him to the dr at the slightest ailment, but I have never dealt with it so ingeniously Grin.

Bitchy - I love the fact that you are having fledgling dreams. I don't think I have ever had any of you in my dreams, but will be looking out for you all now.

DS1 and I both slept downstairs with ToffeeKitten last night. He slept in between us on the mattresses. He woke me at 4ish, demanding food, so I fed him, browsed on MN for a bit, then went back to sleep. He is surprisingly perky this morning and very, very hungry. The vet is ringing me today with the results of the blood tests, so then we'll know, hopefully, what we're dealing with.

Home ed has ground to a halt, thanks to kitten illness, CBT appointments and new school stuff. I have a friend popping round for coffee in a minute, then I'm going to tackle the house.

But first, I suppose I should tackle the naughty corner....

Swanhilda · 20/06/2013 12:20

SC and Blue re diets my main issue is that I get extremely tired in the late afternoon, and was beginning to link it with insulin surges (does that sound v pompous Blush. I was lurching from one jolt to the next, coffee, cake, fruit juice - just to get through day. Even when I ate healthy lunch baked potato, rice dish pasta with veggies this followed. So I am just trying out the theory that white carbs are playing havoc with my insulin. Hence I don't really mind about chick peas, even if theoretically they are carbs at least they are complex ones.
Bread in any form containing gluten is what I am really avoiding. I ate some cornflakes this morning, but that has had same mid morning dip effect. Bananas I exempt because they contain potassium!!!

Swanhilda · 20/06/2013 12:23

I would say though, that all cravings for bread depart when you REMOVE IT COMPLETELY from your repetoire. One tiny piece of cake/biscuit/bread/pasta is enough to re-ignite cravings for second helpings.

superfluouscurves · 20/06/2013 12:54

[hastily puts down ham sandwich]

That is really, really interesting info Swan - thank you. (Am also plagued by 5pm fatigue] Reckon complex carbs are the way to go.

I'm quite terrified of giving up bread (unfortunately Blue we eat lots of it - and the quality is all quite good here - so bit of a double whammy + lots of other patisserie/bread products on top) all. YOu are right - need to just cut down and eat very good wholegrain or rye.

Oh ... wish I could show you the window of my local patisserie .. words can't express

this is in Bruges so not local, but gives you general idea

[SC weeps in to handkerchief]

Still, it must be done ...

superfluouscurves · 20/06/2013 13:02

Good luck with your lsit Fireandblood

x posts Swan interesting that cravings dissipate though ... [glimmer of hope] NOt sure I have the discipline to eliminate completely though

Must be very, very good sign that Toffeekitten is hungry Toffee surely ?? Hope test results are positive!

Goth 12 hrs days sound tough! Not sure I would be managing much Flying at all in those circs ...but fwiw would probably opt for bleurghh on Fridays (depends if you want house to be cleaner before or after w/e) Maybe?

Doris hope your ds feels better soon (aw at doctor-telephone role play)

Had better get on ...
