ooh I'm in. Love a bit of decluttering, and a plan.

I got this book a while back, and found it really helpful so my house is not too bad, but could always do with an extra push. That book covers a lot of the psychology of hoarding/cluttering which is really useful for helping you work out why you keep/accumualte stuff and how you can change how you think about it.

I think I need a policy on stuff coming in as well though - hardly going to be worth getting rid of 10 items a day if I jsut bring in a whole new load of crap. And I have a bit of an Amazon habit at the moment, especially as I am getting into sewing and gardening; keep buying a new pair of scissors here, load of pea netting there etc...

Anyway, shall do cutlery drawer when I get home.

spiderbabymum · 30/05/2013 12:08

Badchat ...did you .........write that book ?

You made it sound just so good

Come on then add your names to list

Count me in please but can't start until Monday 3rd!

Maypoledance · 30/05/2013 13:32

This is great! I started decluttering with DD3 aged 5 on Tuesday. We sorted out her room. Will be following the thread with interest.

badchat · 30/05/2013 13:36

Haha no. I think there are plenty like it - I just bought that one as it was recommended on MN.

This blog post has also got some good points about things not to do especially.

One day at a time! No need to think about all 40 just now...

Which day are you on now spider?

badchat · 30/05/2013 13:41

Hope you don't mind me cluttering up the thread - just copying first few days here for reference so I don't have to keep opening up pdf...

  1. Kitchen drawers- Cutlery and cooking utensils.
  2. Kitchen cupboards- All cupboards with eating dishes (plates, glasses, china, wine glasses,
etc.) and storage containers (like Tupperware or Pyrex containers).
  1. Kitchen cupboards- All cupboards with cooking items (pots, pans, casserole dishes, baking
trays or pans) as well as small appliances (blenders, food processors, toaster ovens, etc.).

  2. Kitchen linens- Dish towels, cloths, rags, oven mitts, napkins, tablecloths, placemats.
  3. Kitchen "other"- Water bottles, reusable bags, lunch boxes and containers, cleaning
supplies, anything else you store in the kitchen that isn't covered somewhere else on the list.
  1. Kitchen cookbooks and recipes.

Also wanted to share link to Recycle This site.

I know a lot of the guides say not to worry too much where things go and just get rid of things, but I'd really rather make use of things if possible than just fill up landfill.

For example - some good ideas for Day 1's cutlery here. I am probably not up to making jewellery out of forks but could definitely drop off odd spoons at work kitchen station where they are always needed for tea, and put a few useful things in tool box.

spiderbabymum · 30/05/2013 14:20

Hi I'm on day three

Major hurdle is gonna be the office though . Gulp

OpheliaBumps · 30/05/2013 14:26

Just read this, I'm in but think I'll need more than 30 minutes a day for 8 weeks to sort everything.

I'd just sorted my underwear drawer before I read this thread, so have already done my 10 items for today, but might go on to the day 1 activity as well, while I'm on a roll Grin

spiderbabymum · 30/05/2013 14:53

The way I look at it ophelia is that I'm 40 . It's taken me until now to have time and to be ready to do this .
30 minutes a day may not be enough for some of the tasks ......the dreaded office , the shed .

But IT'S enough for MOST of the tasks .

I'm hoping if I start with 30 mins on each area...I'll be inspired to keep going on the more difficult ones .

Ok cutlery drawer done! Nice easy one for day 1. Even found 10 items in there altho cheated slightly by moving a couple to new roles, most binned though. Very satisfying!

Cutlery and utensil drawer sorted. 16 items declared 'clutter' and removed. What does one do with unwanted kitchen knives though?

Plates/Tupperware cupboards going to be more of a challenge, but onwards and upwards!

Dysgu · 30/05/2013 23:12

I am in but will be starting with the list on Monday when the kids are back in school so I only have the baby to cope with.

Today though I did sort out the baby clothes and have bagged up the ones he has already grown out of.

DD1 is all excited about starting to 'tidy and organise' the playroom tomoorow - I won't manage to get them to agree to getting rid of many toys - but hopefully we will have it sorted and then it will be ready for me to go through once they are not here!

Have been eyeing my cutlery drawer (is the only drawer in the kitchen) but arrival of DS means we probably shouldn't get rid of the plastic cutlery just yet?

prissyenglisharriviste · 31/05/2013 05:48

I'll start Monday as well, sc. Massively busy weekend. We are moving in 6 weeks... My house was tidy for the two weeks it took to sell it, but we just have. Too. Much. Stuff.

For example, on my living room floor I can see about fifty coat hangers. Obviously, there's bugger all reason why they need to be on the living room floor (left over from ironing) but to need fifty coat hangers as left overs? Really?

And no, I didn't finish the ironing.

spiderbabymum · 31/05/2013 07:35

Hi mums !

Ok that's me done the first four days .im away for the weekend .

I just want to make a point here

MY kitchen has never ever been so tidy .

I have done so much reading about clutter in the last seven days ...all online ....that its now bizzarely easy for me to get rid of stuff .

MY kitchen work tops are clear ....and there's one partic area ....where we eat that's NEVER clear and was FULL OF junk..it's all gone .

I have a tall laundry basket that's FULL of stuff for the bin or charity shop .....mostly charity . I will sort that onnmonday .

So farewell lovely mumsnetters .

I will have to wean myself off this mn addiction over the weekend .

Have fun ...please try to stick to the principle of timing the actual clear out part to 30 minutes ..... Or two fifteen min sessions if you can't face it's.
Come on you can do anything for 15 minutes .

I am now obsessed with decluttering! Reading all the links is really giving me the impetus to get the house totally sorted.

mrspaddy · 31/05/2013 10:17

I finally decluttered a large wicker basket in my sitting room and behind sofa, bookcase etc. Happy now! The wicker basket is totally empty and will be used for baby stuff only in 14 weeks time Grin.
It was full of old Argos books, old trainers, weights etc that I bought and never used. DH was happy though - he got them - I don't know where he put them. They were too heavy for me.
Old remotes etc have gone too. Now I have found little pretty tins in the house and I am going to label them (new label maker is my best friend) for spare batteries as they are lurking all around the house. Also a large box for spare lightbulbs.

MegaClutterSlut · 31/05/2013 10:56

I'm in Grin have got rid of 3 black sacks of crap stuff this week, not that it's made much difference Hmm

It's going to take longer than 40 days, it's a right shit tip mess Blush

MegaClutterSlut · 31/05/2013 13:17

So far today I've managed to put most of the washing away 5 loads worth that have been sat in piles all week and have filled a large carrier with clothes for charity.

ILikeToClean · 31/05/2013 14:10

I'm in too, going to start tomorrow as I am working today. My house is clean and everything is put away but what is in the drawers and cupboards is excessive - I mean, do I really need 4 sieves, over 50 mugs and cups and endless baking dishes? I only ever use the same few all the time so not sure why they are all in there clogging up space. Think the kitchen is the worst, so good that the plan tackles that first! Study getting out of hand too with paperwork and filing so those are my main tasks. But then thinking about it...dds probably have tons of toys and plasticy bits they no longer play with! Hmmm...going to be a big job but getting quite excited about starting! Blush
