Sell me a vacuum to meet my criteria, please.

My 13 yr old dyson is dying. Has had lots of bits fall off over the years but has been a faithful beast.

Now the hose is torn, it's not got all it's attachments and it seems fitting to let it go with some dignity.

I don't have lots of must haves but here's what I do need/want.

I have wood, carpet and tiled floors. Stairs.
No pets but 2 under 3ish kids.
The dyson is both heavy and noisy so would like that to change.
I like it bagless but could be persuaded for the right model.
My hair always clogs the brush.
Like a long flex.
My current is upright but again not averse to change. Must not aggravate bad back.

You can trade in your old dyson for a discount on a new one. I know you said different but they do light weight models now! I luffs my dyson, am on my 3rd.

We have a Dyson Animal: it's meant to be better at dealing with hair! Ours is a cylinder not an upright. It's not cheap but it does seem effective and is purple :)

Sorry not to recommend an alternative but it's a lot lighter than our previous Dyson, if yours is 13 years old the newer versions are pretty good. Look for one on sale to make it less pocket-battering!

I have a dyson cordless. Its fantastic. The roller pops out the side of the head to easily dehair. It does around 20mins on a charge. Thats my four downstairs rooms (tiled plus rugs) and the stairs on a charge.

Its so easy to unclip from the cupboard and do a whole house quick vac without moving plugs or anything heavy to carry around, bash into walls dragging behind you.

Its really convenient for doing the hall where around the shoe and coat stand it needs doing daily and same for the kitchen.

The kids enjoy vacuuming with it and sometimes even argue over whos turn it is to clear up!

I also have the Dyson cordless. I hate vacuuming with a passion but you would have to pry this from my hands sometimes I even stroke it lovingly

It's amazingly light, you can whip round in no time, no cord so you can use it to do the car too plus it turns into a handheld with clever attachments for dusting, skirting boards, crumbs...

Have been having a good look around today and think I'm being disuaded from dyson due to some very mixed reviews. I am so confused. Someone should set up an appliance lending library so you can try before you buy.

The whole of mumsnet seems to love Miele but definitely want a bagless upright and would rather not spend huge amounts of money. £300 as an absolute limit for the perfect specimen. £200 would be better.

we recently changed from years of a cylinder miele to an upright Sebo. It is absolutely brilliant and would recommend wholeheartedly. Not cheap but we got ours on offer at John Lewis.

motb does the Sebo have bags? Is it heavy? What are the attachments like?

I replaced my Dyson with this Miele and love it. It's not any lighter than my Dyson, but it's easier to push around and change direction. I wasn't so keen on going back to a bag, but it doesn't bother me now. There was a noticeable improvement in performance.
