Any suggestions please? Ideally not one that is massively expensive. Thanks.

Leith's Simple Cookery - its a fantastic recipe book which covers a bit of everything. I own loads of cookery books & this is the one I use the most.

looks great but is only supposed to be a gesture and £20 a bit much - looks good though I may get one for me!

I just bought Everyday, Everybody for a tenner on amazon and am very impressed - nice and easy non fancy food - that is based around 2 people but easy to scale up and adapt for kids or freezing .. all ingredients easy to find .. based around 6 ways of cooking 6 things such as chicken or pork chops or lentils - then 6 diffrent sauces to adapt - love it! can see it being useful to everyone

Nigella Express!

It is fab, lots of quick and tasty yummy meals. I really recommend it. I own A LOT of cookbooks and this is the one I cook from again and again and now know many of the recipes by heart because they've become staples.

Any of the Good Food series, they are just £4 and under. 101 one pit dishes is great.

Or Jamie O, Ministry of Food.

Mary Berry's Baking bible.

Also The Good Housekeeping one. Always useful.

And the Bero book. Cheap and cheery.
