I keep reading these fabulous uses for all these products on various different threads and can't keep up with them all. It would be really useful to have lots of household uses for these multipurpose products all in one place.

I would be really grateful if anyone would share their tips and also provide an idiots guide to how to apply them/quantities/strengths etc.

Thank you!

White vinegar instead of fabric conditioner.

Also to clean glass.

Also in water to clean hardwood floors.

Washing soda powder or stains when soaking or in the machine.

I sound like a fan don't I. :o

Great. So do you just mix a paste to clean things with bicarb and vinegar?

Ones I can remember reading recently are:

  • a cup of soda crystals in an empty washin machine on a 90 degree wash to really clean the machine.

Would that work in dishwashers too?

  • I think I read that bicarb or vinegar can be used to descale a kettle?
  • bicarb sprinkled dry on carpets/mattresses/car seats etc left and then hoovered up can remove smells including urine and vomit.
  • soda crystals and boiling water down plug holes to clean them out.

I put the bi carb inside the seal add some white vinegar and then scrub with a brush.then put it on a couple of cycles to really clean through and get rid of the smell

You can use bicarb for litterally ANYTHING!

Mix a paste and clean your grouting, sinks, and anything you want clean and sparkly, put some in the washing machine to remove stubborn stains, use it as a deep cleaning face mask, use it to brush your teeth, make cakes, use it to put out fires, use it to deodorise things like shoes or fridges...

Honestly there's loads. Google it.

Are bicarb and soda crystals the same thing?

Bicarb and a squirt of water on the oven door. Leave it. When you return all the gunk will just wipe off.

INeedALieIn · 12/09/2012 06:05

Not are the. I mean are they.

ceres · 12/09/2012 07:08

ineed - no, they are different. bicarbonate of soda is bread soda, it is used to make soda bread and in other cooking.

washing soda is soda crystals, much stronger and harsher than bicarb though i think chemically similar. not to be used in cooking.

Wow bicarb as a face mask??!

I know there are tons of uses, I'm always reading them on threads on here and on various websites. Would love to have lots of tips in one place!

Sunny, do you speak French by any chance?

There is a great booklet in French which is available for free on the internet and compiles a list of uses for soda crystals, sodium bicarbonate, white vinegar, essential oils, etc.

It also explains how to make some of your own cleaning products.

Let me know if that might be of interest to you. To my knowledge, it has not been translated in English.
