Are Jo Malone candles overpriced and quick way to drain my bank account?

I've found a shop but it looks sooooo expensive. I'd have to save for a candle, but is it worth it?

I saw Lauriefairycake's candle thread, and I did think of giving it a go, but I didn't because I thought I would mess it up!

I will have another look. :)

You would hate my house expat. I also have a plug-in and a sense-and-spray. Blush

expatinscotland · 15/08/2012 23:54

8 drops lavender oil, 4 drops rose geranium oil, 2 drops bergamot oil, 1/2 cup vodka, 1/2 cup distilled water.

Put it in a spray bottle.

Spritz where needed.

cakeismysaviour · 15/08/2012 23:57

Definitely going to try that one! I hate air fresheners, but room sprays are incredibly expensive!

expatinscotland · 15/08/2012 23:59

I find all these air freshners really bad for the health, too. They make asthmatic friends of mine wheeze and give others migraines.

NarkedRaspberry · 15/08/2012 23:59

They're worth it IMO. If you have issues with damp, a dehumidifier might be a better purchase though.

LadySybildeChocolate · 16/08/2012 00:01

I don't think it's damp, there's no signs. It just smelt musty. It's OK now though because it's lived in IYKWIM.

I can think of what to do with the left over vodka; there's a plum tree in the garden. Plum liqueur!!

Open the windows!

cakeismysaviour · 16/08/2012 00:02

They make me cough too. Can't abide them at all, hence the other stuff I have been using.

expatinscotland · 16/08/2012 00:03

But plug in and sense and spray are full of all kinds of vile stuff, too.

Wean yourself off them! You'll feel better for it and your purse will as well.

LadySybildeChocolate · 16/08/2012 00:03

The last time I opened the windows I found 4 bats in the house! Grin It's also been pissing it down.

I am going to try making my own. I could save jam jars and tie pretty ribbons around them for Christmas gifts too. :)

LadySybildeChocolate · 16/08/2012 00:07

That sounds lovely, cake Smile

Jam jars, mugs, old tiny planters your plants have outgrown, teacups. All free or far cheaper than plug ins and Yankee candles.

I buy beeswax and wicks online.

Room spray dirt cheap and far better than commercial stuff, IMO.

I spray our rooms in the morning after everyone gets up and always open the window for at least a few minutes even in winter.

You can also set a bowl of water with a few drops of essential oil in it on your gas heaters in winter to scent your home, or throw pine cones or citrus peel on the fire, bake bread, rub a few drops of essential oil on your lightbulbs when they're cool.

Loads more cost-effective ways of scenting that are better for your purse, your health and the environment.

cakeismysaviour · 16/08/2012 00:11

Will hopefully work out nice and cheap too. :)

LadySybildeChocolate · 16/08/2012 00:12

I wish I hadn't have stuck this thread in chat now, it's really useful Sad

Thank you, expat and ladies Smile

Thanks expat. :)

I am feeling really inspired now!

expatinscotland · 16/08/2012 00:14

Lauriefairycakes candles seriously rock! She posted photos of them, too.

V. pretty.

cakeismysaviour · 16/08/2012 00:14

Maybe get the thread moved?

cakeismysaviour · 16/08/2012 00:16

I am going to keep an eye out for a tea cup to make a candle for MIL. She loves things like that. :)
