Are Jo Malone candles overpriced and quick way to drain my bank account?

I've found a shop but it looks sooooo expensive. I'd have to save for a candle, but is it worth it?

People in the UK may not be starving (well, some are but not to death), it doesn't mean their life isn't crapola though.

I have one, bought for me by DS with his first wages, it is beautiful and lovely for a treat but not something I would buy for myself as a matter of course. My house is older so has larger rooms than modern houses and I find it hard to get a pleasant level of fragrance, candles are either not enough to scent the room or are chemically overpowering. The Jo Malone one smells gorgeous but does not scent as much as I would like.

IsItMeOr · 15/08/2012 21:48

I wondered into the Jo Malone concession in John Lewis the other day, and was a bit offended when the sales people spoke to everybody but me. I can't decide whether they thought I couldn't afford them, or looked like I was too savvy to spend that much on a candle...

Tee2072 · 15/08/2012 21:49

The latter IsIt, for sure.

LadySybildeChocolate · 15/08/2012 21:51

My house is a victorian terrace. It smelled a little damp when I first moved in, I think it was from the cellar. It just smells of Lavender Oil now but I'm looking for something else. I have a slight addiction to Yankee Candle but they don't seem to make any difference (and I can't find a stockist here).

I agree with Tee, IsItMe.

I obviously haven't been out in a while - hadn't realised JM's candles went up to £260!

Gah!

Well, I suppose if you burnt all 2.5 kilos in one go it might get rid of your lavender scent...Grin

Mind you, you could probably cover the house in JM candles for the price of this one.

LadySybildeChocolate · 15/08/2012 22:59

Wow! Shock

The lavender is rather strong (and is giving me a headache).

I'm watching this thread.
I love scented candles, I have Yankee ones, but happy to listen to advice.

LadySybildeChocolate · 15/08/2012 23:12

www.lily-flame.co.uk I was given one of these, it smells lovely.

"I loved the luxury candle - I would heat my house with them if I could. The price is quite high but if you shut the doors they can give you quite a buzz"

The above is a review for the £260 candle from the JM website, that's got to be a pisstake, right?

LadySybildeChocolate · 15/08/2012 23:26

Grin That's really sad. They should just have sex, it's a free buzz!

candles in jars are just well tacky waste of money put the money toward the bath oils they are lovely

just get a nice candle holder, a candle and sprinkle a little oil (very little) then light candle there much cheaper and look much nicer

LadySybildeChocolate · 15/08/2012 23:31

Smile Thank you, I'll give that a try.

They are a rip off! Buy beeswax and wicks online. Use any old mug or suitable mould. Make your own. Takes minutes, is fun, cheaper and smells far lovelier than flaming petro chemicals. Yuk.

Fedupnagging · 15/08/2012 23:36

Wonders if anyone has actually spent £260 on a candle? Shock

Go to TKMaxx, you can get some lovely candles and reed thingys for a fraction of the price.

cakeismysaviour · 15/08/2012 23:41

I use one of those things where you put an ordinary tealight in the bottom and a wax tart in the top and it is brilliant!

I use the Yankee wax tarts and they last ages and are so much cheaper than the candles!

I find the scent so much stronger doing it this way too. Maybe because there is no smell of the wick burning, masking the scent?

expatinscotland · 15/08/2012 23:43

Yak! Why not smoke cigarettes in the house, too? Or use those vile Plug-Ins? Probably just as many nasty chemicals coming off those wax tart things and all those nasty petroleum-based candles.

Get you a lovely oil burner and some beeswax tealights. Mix your own oils if it's overly stinky - you can make your own oils, too, if you grow herbs or flowers.

For a room spray, let me dig out the recipe, but it's basically vodka, distilled water and essential oils of your choice.

cakeismysaviour · 15/08/2012 23:45

But they smell so nice!

brighthair · 15/08/2012 23:45

These are amazing. I buy the wax tarts for in a burner. Favourite is j&j baby bath for in the bedroom but here is the scent list - jo Malone dupes Wink

expatinscotland · 15/08/2012 23:47

Trust me, once you get accustomed to natural smells, they all smell rank. They are cheap as chips to make, too, as they use a by-product of petroleum production to make them en masse that they pay peanuts for.

Look for Lauriefairycake's thread on making your own and don't be conned!

brighthair · 15/08/2012 23:50

The link I posted is to ones made with soy wax. I hate air fresheners which is why I use these

LadySybildeChocolate · 15/08/2012 23:52

Smile I'll have a look, thank you. I really would rather buy chocolate and wine. Blush The room spray sounds lush.
