Fledgling Flyers Olympic August thread.

BitchyDragons · 31/07/2012 04:01

Ok so not the wittiest of titles but this month we have the Olympics, holidays, return of football season and heading into the new school year. It's going to be a busy one...

Firstly thanks to Blue and Ellie who kept us on track last month! Thanks

Right, most of you should know how this works. It's a three pronged attack.
Phase one: The babysteps master these and you will be working like clockwork.
Phase two: Adding in Decluttering this will help you keep on top of the amount of stuff contributing to CHAOS.
Phase three: Missions Targeted activities to keep the chaos at bay and starting the deep cleaning.

The golden duster of Flying is stage 4: deep cleaning. This is for most, unrealistic and should only be considered once you have completely decluttered. PA might achieve this simply by virtue of some extreme life decluttering. Although I probably won't recommend her method.

Now for those of you who are completely lost, lets rewind a bit.
CHAOS: Can't have anyone over syndrome. Yep you know that state where you are embarrassed to have play dates fucking hate that phrase or people pop in unexpectedly.
The fly lady approach works by breaking the house down into tiny activities which you do repeatedly yep sounds bad written like that but bare with me and then build up into a routine that becomes habit and you stop thinking about it no really, you do.

Clearer? Yeah ok. I have probably lost you but there is loads of support and help on this thread. If you are confused then ask. However, as this thread starts on the 1st on August I refuse to post the first babystep until later today.

This thread comes with a warning: For those of you who have not yet encountered my leadership of the thread. Be afraid, very afraid aware that I have a rather unorthodox approach and that things can get a tad unpredictable. Starting with a namechange. So who?s on board this month?

Oh and spot markers can help themselves to a magic eraser and ensure there are no marks on the thread for the start of the month. Let?s start as we mean to go on

Ors goes something like this, depending on what day it is (after school activities wise, we do something pretty well every night).

Dinner at about 6.15.
DCs then go off to play/watch telly for a bit, while I make packed lunches (I have one as well as the DCs), do any clearing, sort out school notes, Ocado order etc.
7 - DCs have a bath or shower (downstairs bathroom), I do a bit of tidying
7.20 - DCs have vitamins, do teeth, do some tidying downstairs
7.30 - all upstairs, spend about an hour reading, doing spellings, speech therapy etc, with each individually, tidying, putting clothes away, fresh clothes out, more playing, bedtime stories etc. That is actually the nicest hour of the day quite often.

I suspect I haven't been sat down by 7.30 since DS was about 2 and DD was born, but as I rarely go to bed before 11 it doesn't matter too much in terms of me time, but sometimes I am physically exhausted by 9, however I come to life again by about 9.30!

BitchyDragons · 28/08/2012 14:24

Bloody hell. You all look so oragnised wrt to evening stuff.
I don't have 2 days in the week that are a like other then sat and sun on the weekends I have ds but even then it depends on whether or not he has a game.
For an example this is ds tea times due to activities:
Monday: 5:30pm
Tuesday: 4:30 to be out of door before 5pm
Wednesday: 6:30pm if back in time
Thursday: 5pm to be out of door by 5:30pm
Friday (contact wkends): 3:30pm to be out of door by 4pm

How the hell do you set up a regular routine with a schedule like that Confused

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/08/2012 14:36

That's why we eat so late:

Next term it will be

Mon - free after school (ATM)
Tues - DS football at school till 4.30, DD Rainbows 5.15 - 6.15, DS Cubs 6.30-8.15 - everyone will just have to eat when they can
Weds - both Swimming 5.20 - 6.20, home 6.45 - not decided yet, new lesson time
Thurs - DS football 6-7
Fri - DD Drama 5.15-6.15 - will eat afterwards

Therefore 6 +/- half an hour works fairly consistently.

Right, must stop procrastinating and get some Flying done. Still waiting for Sky man to turn up.

BitchyDragons · 28/08/2012 14:47

Don't get in til 8:30pm Tuesday and 9:30pm Thursday, and I am out of the house by 7pm on a Monday. Late wouldn't work here either. Hmm

Think the conclusion we can grab from this is 1. I am not very good at sitting still and 2. I am a night owl for a reason sometimes. Hmm

OP posts:
NickNacks · 28/08/2012 14:57

I guess that's where our evenings are very different. Because I have mindees after school every day until 6pm our own dc can't do all that much in the evenings. They still do lots but it's at other times. Judo is before school one morning, swimming lessons are with school every single week so no need for seperate lessons. And cubs and beavers on a Friday night 6pm onwards so no interference with dinner (which is always 5.15pm for the children due to mindees).

Cherrypi · 28/08/2012 15:14

Can see the bottom of the wash basket. Also made bread for the first time in months. Smile

BitchyDragons · 28/08/2012 15:27

Indeed Nicknacks. And because I don't have ds everyweekend he has no activities at the weekend and that is calm and peaceful in comparison to the week when everything has to get fit in. I guess others are busier at the weekends as this suits them better.

Mind you more thenone person has accused me of being scary organised atm. Mind you that might just be because I have commitments up until May being booked in already.

OP posts:
ToffeeWhirl · 28/08/2012 15:47

WhoKnows - "I am very fed up with DH and his lack of tidiness at the moment, it is really getting me down. He is completely oblivious to mess and anything you want to do you have to spell out to him step by step. It's like having an extra child."

Have you seen this thread? Wink

Sorry you have had such a difficult day so far - made worse by the lack of sleep, I suspect. I tried conkers last autumn, by the way, but they didn't work. We probably didn't have enough of them.

NickNacks - am very impressed by your efficient routines, especially the bedtimes.

Bitchy - you still have a routine, but it's just different every day. Looks as if it works just fine for you, so I wouldn't worry.

Cherrypi - congratulations. I haven't seen the bottom of my laundry bin since I first bought it Blush (it has stuff at the bottom that needs dry cleaning or hand washing and I never get round to it).

Well, my plans went askew today. Was going to take the boys into town for hair cuts and shoe buying, but ended up having to go to the drs instead and being sent off for blood tests and a chest x-ray, which wasn't part of today's plan AT ALL.

Am now back home and the dog is whining piteously, which means, I think, she's desperate for a proper long walk rather than a quick walk around the block. So am going to hang the washing out, then take her and the boys out for some exercise on the Downs.

ChitchatAtHome · 28/08/2012 15:53

Bitchy - I can understand that feeling of sheer desperation and the strength you get from it. I?m not surprised your back hurts though, that?s a heck of a lot of furniture moving there!

PA - Wow.... just wow.... you poor thing. Time to keep your family locked in me thinks!

Toffee - glad you?re on the improve, hope it continues.

IWipe - that?s why I buy paint at my local paint shop and have it mixed there and then. They?re also faster, and more knowledgeable than anyone at the DIY shops.

NickNacks - Envy at your sitting room. Although mine doubles up as the DSs? playroom, so any tidying lasts a miniscule amount of time.

WhoKnows - Smile Smile SmileSmile Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile to help cheer you up.

Lauren - you?re right, I certainly didn?t appreciate living so close to the coast for most of my life. It?s only now when the drive to the beach is hours away that I realise how lucky I was.

Waves to Blue and Cherry and anyone else I?ve missed.

Well I?ve finally managed to sit down for five minutes with a cup of tea and catch up with the thread. I feel exhausted, the house is in chaos (when isn?t it?? Hmm) and I?ve got so many things on my todo list that won?t help get the house tidy over the next week that it?s ridiculous!

It was nice catching up with my friend yesterday though. He's so very, very lucky he's not worse off. They moved house on Friday though, and DF's fiancee was struggling a bit coping with DF and getting the house sorted. She's far more organised than I am though, if I were in the same situation my house would have been in a far worse state - I think that's because she's better at decluttering, they have far less boxes than I did when I moved. DH and another friend helped move some heavier boxes upstairs and put their wardrobe up while I let DF's fiancee download on me, and the DSs talked DF's ear off while he was trapped in his chair.

I have more paid work coming in, which is sort of nice. Just wish it could have waited until next Thursday when DSs go back to school and nursery. Trying to make the most of this last full week of school holidays and have things planned for every day of the week.

Tada:
Take and send photo of chest of drawers to potential buyer
Go to storage unit and pull out bed and mattress for friend to collect
While there pull out futon and bring it back to set up in spare room
Go through 1 box of papers in storage unit
Shred throw out pile of papers from storage unit
Empty my and DH?s shredding into hole in the ground and cover with dirt (cheats way of filling in a hole Grin!)
One x load of bedding washed, hung and brought inside
One x load of shirts, washed, starched and hung up to dry
One x load in washing machine
Lunch for DSs
15 minute tidy up in lounge room
5 minute tidy up in kitchen
5 minute tidy up in dining room
Child swap (DS1 off to friends and her DS2 here playing with my DS2)

Now I?ve got less than 15 mins before I have to get both DS2s to martial arts (only DS1 does it, but both friend?s DSs do. DS2 has to wait until January to start). Then a quick dinner for the boys, bath and bed. Make dinner for DH and myself and sit down and get working. Hopefully will get it finished in time to do at least a smidgen of tidying up before bed. In there somewhere I have to do some ironing ? clothes situation getting a bit desperate! Grin

But tomorrow I start kickboxing!!! Grin I?m really looking forward to it, although I probably won?t be able to move for a few days after that.

LadyKopperberg · 28/08/2012 16:24

Total novice here. I have heard of fly lady but never tried it out. Where do I start and what do I do? I am a lone parent to 4dc aged 2-7 and am in full time college so could really do with getting sorted with housework . Confused

Jamillalliamilli · 28/08/2012 17:43

Anyone else catch the procrastination program on radio 4 this morning?

I wasn't using it to procrastinate honestly found it quite interesting if less meaty than I hoped, but it did introduce me to the fact Aristotle was writing about this stuff way back when, ok so I?m an uneducated goit and you all already knew that Google Akrasia and Aristotle together if it interests you.

I found it really useful in tackling some of son?s pre-conceptions about himself, and he?s considering accepting that this is a standard human condition rather than he is useless. Good stuff.

Hi LadyKopperberg, (another Lp here Smile ) lots of more organised people than me will be along to explain all to you soon, but if you have a scroll back you?ll see whichever kind brave soul is leading the thread, which is currently Bitchy Dragons, posts links to babysteps (along with other things) daily.

She gives a layout of the three pronged attack in her O/P. You (and I) will be following phase 1; babysteps.

The link to the main page is here: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/
Day 1 will start again on Sept 1st.

For beginners you just run with those daily babysteps building yourself a routine and adapting things to suit your circumstances. (Though I think we all agree do not sign up to flylady emails, you will regret it!) Don't worry if some of it is too pink and fluffy, many of us find it that way too, but it does work.

You can in theory jump in anywhere but may find it simplest to mark your place on the thread and meet everyone, until Sept 1st when the building of babysteps starts again with the 1st one? (When I will once more try to get on the dam wagon and stay there!)

The more organised will be along to explain more soon. Smile

NickNacks · 28/08/2012 19:19

Welcome lady :)

Ta da

Dc swimming
Food shop
Sorted dd toys
4 bags of clothes out to charity collectors
Cooked roast dinner
Eaten roast dinner
Cleared up kitchen/pans/dw on
Laundry wash dried and folded
Changed dd bed sheets
Dd in bed

I had a pop inner earlier today Shock One of dhs colleagues stopped on her way past on a bike ride. She didn't come in but I actually felt ok about the house had she done so. :) progress!

BitchyDragons · 28/08/2012 21:23

Good explanation there Just*!
Welcome Lady! Am another Lp but ds has contact visits with his dad. It does work but I have found that perhaps the system is taking longer to integrate then it would have done if I had full help with ds/was just working to one schedule instead of an ever changing plan which seems impossible to pin down.

Anything on r4 is too educated for around here. We are an r1 kinda household.

Trying to get a stinky tired ds into the shower.

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/08/2012 21:58

Welcome Lady - you are in the right place here. There are all sorts of folks on this thread, some have been here a long time and some are recent joiners, we are all at various stages with our Flying progress and speaking for myself, the motivation (and chat!) from this thread is great.

Well, Sky men came (two of them) replaced the box, the cables, the dish, the lot in fact, knocked down my guttering and put it back up again, so all sorted (till next time). I have decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and get going again with the Flying, spent quite a long time tidying tonight and an hour's ironing (all the holiday stuff). The DCs both wrote really nice stories while I ironed, they have both made a lot of progress with writing this year (both from a low baseline it has to be said!). They are both making a lot of effort with various things at the moment (cutlery use being another example).

Toffee - I was on that thread, but decided to hide it in the end as far from reassuring me I was not alone it was just making me feel even more critical of DH without providing any answers.

ChitChat - glad your friend is OK, that accident sounds terrifying.

Just - I missed the programme but saw an article about it on the BBC website. Sorry things have been hard for you recently, it's good to have you back on the thread again.

NickNacks - your evening routine has given me a lot of food for thought today! I'm always looking to streamline mine, but have a tendency to flop onto the computer while the DCs are bathing / tidying up instead of getting on with my own jobs.

PA - sorry your family have had a rough few days, I'm so full of admiration for what you are doing.

I'm tired, going to head upstairs in a minute and watch a bit of telly and do my crochet. Nearly finished my latest project, have ordered wool for my next.

pushmepullyou · 28/08/2012 22:11

Hi all and welcome lady Smile

Really interesting to hear about evening routines - ours is a bit odd because of work - 6:30 get in, 7(ish) eat tea, 7:45 upstairs for a bath, 8:30(ish) bed, so it is nice to see that whoknows has similar timescales to us (though possibly older DC!)

Bitchy at least with r1 you're in the 21st century. We seem to have slowly slipped into r2 in this house (although tbf it has exactly the dame line-up and music ) as the r1 of my yoof!)

toffee how are you now? Hope you're properly mended or at least getting there

justgetting I have a very strong memory of being about 17 and skiving off college because I was too lazy to get up and schlepp across town so instead watching a programme on effective time management. The irony has stayed with me to this day!

PA I hope you are OK - sounds like you're having a very testing time at the moment.

Waves to chitchat blue and everyone I've missed

Builders started here today so flying for the next few weeks is generally going to consist of keeping up with routines whilst also clearing a thin film of plaster dust off every surface on a presumably daily basis! They did hoover the stairs and landing before leaving though and I am very impressed so far

pushmepullyou · 28/08/2012 22:13

that wpuld be r2 has the same line-up, rather than a dj list of panto drag queens Grin

BlueEyeshadow · 28/08/2012 22:34

Waves to all and hi to lady.

Have done a bit more tidying in the sitting room and decluttering of utility room today. I've got some work for tomorrow, so how much house bleugh gets done depends on how it goes.

Impressed by all the organised evening routines. We need to agree a new term time morning routine this week and start implementing it next week so as to have a few days practice before they start back... I want to get things set up so that if everything gets done, there's time to play before school - virtue being its own reward and all that... We'll see!

Kickboxing sounds exciting, ChitChat!
Good luck with builders, PMPY - hope it continues to go well.

Night all...

BitchyDragons · 28/08/2012 22:41

Today started really slowly. Ds let me lie in this morning. And my body must have needed it because I slept til 1pm. Thankfully it hurts less to breath today. The effects of the effort and extra aggreivation should hopefully be felt quickly. But this means that ds and I haven't really done anything all week. :(
Must do something tomo.

To do:
wash ds' training kit and make up ready for tonight
find paperwork needed for tonight
Moutain of laundry
Pack ds' stuff for going away
ds to training/deal with paperwork
remove old nail varnish
find important letter and deal with can't find it
Sort out online stuff that is on to do list.
Make decision about funeral.
Count up the shrapnel in the penny pot
hoover cobwebs
dust pictures
Clear out handbag
Hang curtains
Break picture - glass clip frame thingy
have all plans turned upside down and inside out again
Sort out tomo's meeting

Not much flying here but the packing continues. We now have a date of next Wed (5th) and we went to have the final inspection of the new house today. Carpets to be laid in the next day or 2 and contracts have been signed in preparation for exchange on Friday!

I have thought for a while that my "problem" with regard to my lack of "housewife behaviour" is that I've never really liked my house enough to keep it really clean and tidy. This would seem really odd to most people as I am lucky enough to have a 5 bed detached house that many people would give their eye teeth for! I am really happy about the new house so I'm hoping that I have the desire and dedication to keep on top of the tasks needed. As we'll have less "clutter" and I want everything to "have a home" then hopefully I'm some of the way there. Just need to drag DH and DD along with me!

ChitChat - I used to be a kickboxer, and got close to gaining my black belt. Not bad for being 40+ and overweight. I was always better at the kicking than the boxing bit so I have thought that maybe TaeKwonDo would be a better option for me. I hope you enjoy it.

Have rather fallen off the wagon this summer and it shows. Came back from camping in Devon on Friday and haven't quite sorted/put away everything yet, nearly there. Then I need to tackle the general mess though I had left house in half-decent state before we left Hmm
Much more fun to go to wonderful new swimming pool that has just opened on our doorstep/park/friend's wedding/paralympic torch relay/etc :)

List for today:

  • Work - done end of month stuff
  • Breakfast for all
  • All dressed
  • Morning routine done properly for first time in ages
  • Ironing away
  • Living room rescued
  • Trip to dentist to include hunt for golden post box and possible forage for wild plums :)
  • Ironing
  • Paralympic Opening Ceremony

I will endeavor to catch up when I can but hope everyone is in fine fettle and looking forward to the Indian Summer that I am expecting :)

laurenamium · 29/08/2012 13:45

Hi all! Time for a catch up! Things are really busy here as predicted! Its the end of the holidays combined with all of my yearly memberships and updates being due for work plus I have the 2 houses and multiple dogs still!

To do:
Home bleugh mams house Blush
Wash bath towels and mats at mine
Sweep at mams
Walk dogs
Settling in and Contract signing with new mindees- have another one tomorrow too Grin
Tea for me and DD of some sort!
Hoover at mine

Ta da:
Baking
Dog walk
My kitchen cleaned after baking and sink shined

Those talking about evening routines, I'm lucky in that DD is still only small and we both eat with mindees so tea for us is at 4:30, then at 6 it's tidy toys and Hoover followed by DD bedtime hour and she's in bed normally asleep by 7 Smile I always wash up after tea as I eat faster than the children so by 7 the house is hoovered and kitchen sorted which takes the stress out of my before bed tidy up! I do realise I'm lucky with no clubs though! And when DD stops having milk before bed I would imagine she will need supper of some sort to last her through the night so things will change!

Waves to cherrypi and kopperburg! I'm a lone parent too Grin

chitchat my house is a 5 minute walk through parks to the beach and I never go Blush but my mums house looks onto the beach- there's no houses just a road then walkway and sand and sea Smile and this is where I grew up so I think I have found my love for the beach again now its all I can see Grin

toffee you knew a childminder that took the children to the pub?! Shock I would be interested in the risk assessments for those outings Grin

...ran out of time but I'll wave to everyone now and read more later Smile

BlueEyeshadow · 29/08/2012 14:05
