Smell of..... well I think it's wacky smoke!

We've been in our new house for four weeks. We have four floors but are only using the middle two as top and bottom need work doing on them. The top floor has deep cupboards in the eaves down both sides and when I looked around there were lights inside and they were lined with silver insulation - I have to admit that my first thought was "someone's been growing something". (not entirely unimaginable - there were teenage/twenties boys living here before with their mum). So far - unbothered! But the other day I went up to the top floor and at the top of the stairs there was a strong smell of cannabis smoke - and the person I was with smelt it too and came to the same conclusion. I've just got back from a long weekend away and the smell is even stronger - I smelt it on the floor below quite strongly. I've checked in all the cupboards and there is nothing there (that I can see) - and there were no windows open so it's definitely coming from inside (and I checked in all the cupboards that nobody was there smoking!!)

So my question is, has anyone had any experience getting rid of lingering smoke smells? I genuinely have no idea where to start!

If someone was growing plants in your house then it's possibly that that you're smelling and not smoke. It's probably best to clear out wherever you think they might have been growing as any remaining bits of leaves or what-not will be causing the smell.

I agree, clear out thoroughly and try to air the cupboards if you can.

thanks both - I didn't realise the actual plants smell too - The cupboards have been cleared mostly (but not the insulation etc) .... will get onto that asap. That floor also has v old looking carpet which I haven't managed to get rid of yet - I think that better be next on the list.

Oh, yes, the plants are very pungent, it's the smell that usually gives them away.

God yes, the plants smell strong!
They have def been growing in your cupboards and the smell is lingering on.

I repainted my hall last year and once the paint had dried it smelt of weed! It was so odd and hung around for a couple of months. Whenever I came into the house I could smell it. Bet the postman thought I had become a right stoner!!

Our top floor has cupboards built into the eaves. They are lined with silver insulation and have lights inside them. We don't grow weed Grin, the lofts are handy to see where all the crap we shove into the cupboards is. The insulation is... Well... Insulation!

However, if you can smell something then maybe it has been grown or smoked up there. When we open the velux windows on our top floor there is always a strange smell - it doesn't come in from outside (the downstairs rooms never smell of it when their windows are open) and I have no idea what the smell is, I know it's not anything dodgy as we had that floor built ourselves a few years back. Tis a mystery though!
