Fledglings Fly into July!

BlueEyeshadow · 30/06/2012 21:28

Welcome to the July 2012 Fledgling Flyers thread. Park your mops, buckets and microfibre cloths here!!

A huge "thank you" to SanguineChompa for leading us throughout June!! Thanks

If your house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine along the way.

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, and as we are all at different stages we will be using one of the following methods:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

All welcome!!

Apologies for starting the thread so late - it took SC lobbing the duster at me to make me remember it's July tomorrow (and I've blatantly cut and pasted her OP too)!

The first baby step is to shine your sink! See here for the Fat Fairy's tutorial...

No mission because it's Sunday. But here's the flight plan for established flyers

evening.

8 weeks til september.

MaggieMcVitie · 08/07/2012 22:04

Lost my way abit over the weekend but clawed it back this evening...upstairs cleaned and hoovered anyway.

Must so the ironing pile early tomorrow as I think school uniform must be in there somewhere!

Had a lovely day, went to a friends farm to watch some showjumping this am, lunch at my Mums, watched the tennnis this pm, oddly got something in my eye when Andy Murray was interviewed afterwards - must be the dust...Grin

BlueEyeshadow · 08/07/2012 22:15

Good evening!

Waves back to MC - nice to see you again! - and welcome to Cupcakes :)

We've just about made it through the day without serious injury or bloodshed here... Wink Managed to watch the first two sets of the tennis and miss the end, which I'm not too disappointed about (my missing it, rather than the result, I mean!). I'm not sure whether it was more frustrating to watch when DS1 was ignoring it and crashing about noisily, getting in front of the screen etc, or when he was taking an interest and asking incessant questions about what was going on!

Anyway, Bodyclutter

Well done to swan and SC - keep up the good work! SC I would definitely keep at it over the summer - apart from anything, it's much easier to avoid puddings when there's loads of lovely soft fruit available...

Lauren - don't feel down about this week - you're doing really well!

I've lost 2lb again this week and have also ordered some new scales as our current ones weigh about half a stone heavy!

Babystep 9 is a decluttering lesson.

We're into the kitchen this week, and the mission is to clean the stove top.
Flight plan is here with other useful stuff too. Monday is home blessing house bleugh day.

Whoknows I think you feel like a real camper when you go in real weather, unlike all those flybynight fair weather campers Wink Glad it was a success! Was that last year's very large tent?
Castlelough I'm way behind you, so can't recommend anything. Fantastic about Grade 3 Honours. I'm still only grade 2, and only thinking^ about grade 3 pieces. It has made such a difference moving my piano out of the telly room though!!

SC just keep plodding on with the weightloss, although it seems boring at first it soon becomes a way of life, and you won't miss anything in a few weeks Anyway in four weeks you won't remember all the food you have eaten and only kick yourself that you didn't keep going.
I think your time off with Dh is precious, and perhaps you should ask the guests to come and stay with the proviso that he will be working during the day, and see how they take that. After all, it is no-one's Right to come and stay and expect to be entertained, just because you live in a beautiful foreign place. Sometimes I think we are too worried about looking after guests, when they are just happy to "stay" and look around by themselves. Also I think you may have to reschedule the godfather visit, in light of other commitments. I am actually in awe of you being such a kind and generous hostess, as I find having people to stay very very wearing! As I always feel I have to look after them every minute of the day...
My sister has people to stay all through the year, as she moved to Dublin/Westmeath so has stacks of old friends from London wanting to catch up with her, and she has got it down to fine art, of 4 days max, picnic lunches, disappear to your bedroom for a large part of day so as not to feel overwhelmed. I am in awe of her too frankly..I don't know how she manages, like you to have so many guests.

Bodyclutter swam 8 lengths, and kept to diet (no snacks, no wine, or juice)
Feel tired now though.
[house still a mess - today has been an effort to get ds1 to keep off snacks and ds2 away from telly, so I feel like I had to just focus on those problems]

Dh did some gardening Yay, I think he is starting to take an interest after 12 years!

swanthingafteranother · 08/07/2012 22:27

Lauren a completely different kettle of fish from a Springer then! Lots of shitzus round here, they are so biddable in comparison...

Maggie/Blue dd was trying to persuade me to arrange a playdate this afternoon for her, and I kept saying, Don't You Understand, They Will all be watching the Tennis and won't want to drive their daughters down here in the middle... Poor dd very frustrating.

MC lovely to hear from you, and how, DRUM ROLL is the new teaching job going? Has it been as you expected? Is it satisfying?

better go back to Wallander now. A bit incomprehensible and grey, but I can see it is worth getting into.

swanthingafteranother · 08/07/2012 22:29

oh yes
done
changed 2 sets of sheets
ironing pile assembled
dusted door frames and picture rails on landing, and ds2's room
cooked large spicy tuna pasta bake with hidden veg

ToffeeWhirl · 08/07/2012 23:11

Makingchanges - welcome back! Smile

And welcome to LetThereBeCupcakes too Smile.

SC - oh, that really does sound all too much - no wonder you feel like crying. I think you will have to be firm about when you are available and make sure your family time is not in the available time, otherwise you will just end up resenting all your visitors.

Grin at you following your DD up the aisle with a bucket and spade.

WhoKnows - glad the camping trip went so well.

Blue - we managed to miss the end of the tennis too (driving home from MIL's).

Lauren - how exciting about the new puppy!

Maggie - glad you had such a happy day (apart from the Andy Murray interview Sad).

castle - looks like a very productive day for you.

Witchy - it's Sunday - you are meant to be relaxing! (But well done on having such a busy day).

Have managed to combine keeping the DC and family happy with sorting out the house today, I think.

Ta da

Early morning shop for b/fast
B/fast for my two DSs and one extra (DS1's friend, who slept over)
DH took DS2 out to adventure playground which meant I...
Blitzed messy kitchen
Put washing on (first load)
Hung washing on line
Hoovered and mopped floors
Tackled kitchen hotspot
Put second wash on
Hung next load on line
Waved goodbye to DS1's friend
Lunch
Assembled this wooden shoe storage rack with DS2's help
DS2 and I put all our shoes onto the new rack, stood back and admired
Attempted to join in play with DS2, but fell asleep on the bed, much to his disgust Blush
Visited MIL for celebratory tea: it's a year today since she moved into her new flat to be near us. Watched the tennis whilst helping DS2 assemble Lego car.
Home - made up DS2's bed with clean sheets
Decluttered top drawer in DS2's chest of drawers and put small toys into 'rainy day' box for the Summer hols.
15 mins ironing
Bathtime for DC
Put some clean washing away whilst DS2 was in the bath
Laid out tomorrow's uniform for DS2
Bedtimes and storytimes
MN time Grin

On my 'to do' list next week is: deregister DS1 from school. Am feeling anxious about it, but I think it'll feel liberating once I've done it. The e-learning is just silly - lots of curriculum box ticking - and I feel frustrated that DS1 is so bored by it all. Also, I know they are working to get him back to school, but he can't go back, so there's no point in what they are doing. We have done everything the school and LEA suggested and none of it has worked for DS, so I give up on them all. I honestly think we could do a better job at this stage of DS1's life. Still feels like a huge leap though and I keep thinking someone will 'tell me off' for doing it Hmm.

Night all.

WitchyBitchy · 09/07/2012 02:16

err hate to say it toffee but saturday was busy. sunday i did fuck all.

can't sodding sleep. someone know how to get my brain to shut the fuck up and let me sleep?

CarpeJugulum · 09/07/2012 06:18

Quick post as am wiped out with stomach bug as is DH. Crossing fingers that DS escapes.

DH hopefully off to docs today.

Am only consoling myself with the fact that this will make my body clutter look fabulous - sadly due to the inability to eat.

Back when life/body stops ganging up on me.

laurenamium · 09/07/2012 07:38

Just a list dump this morning! Running very late so dog walk will have to wait until later when the rain stops Blush

To do:
Walk dog
DD and mindee to playgroup
Home bleugh
Clean hob
Wait for online food shop to be delivered
Puppy shop!
Routines
Shred

BBL

laurenamium · 09/07/2012 07:40

swan I agree about the polar opposite to the springer! I'm going to have to get puppy a bag to sit in when it gets tired as I'm pretty certain they aren't allowed to walk 5 miles a day when they are puppies and I'm not even sure they will manage as an adult! I'm going to look very vapid! Might even buy it a little jumper and hat Grin

swanthingafteranother · 09/07/2012 09:32

Good morning all!
Springer is here, visiting, this morning, and cleaning lady is imminent.

Toffee read your posts about de-registering - so difficult to know what to do, but the tutting from those around SHOULD NOT be part of your decision making. I think our children do suprise us, and they do behave differently with different people; sometimes they get into a pattern of behaviour with their parents that is not always followed through in other settings. BUT that doesn't mean that your ds1 is going to function best with other people teaching him, just that you might need to change the approach in the way you teach him.

I had a classic battle with ds1 last night. I tried to make him go for a walk after the tennis. Now he is usually perfectly happy to go for a walk and chat to me, but for some reason we ended up with battle of wills, him screaming, and refusing to budge. Dh then took him for a walk and he was fine Shock but I'm not sure where this leaves us Grin as I cannot summon Dh like a genie everytime I want Ds to do something!!!! I shall have to consult the family therapist on that one!!! Oh dear...

Anyway the scales say that Ds1 has reduced his weight over last few days, we are writing it in a book and I hope this might motivate him. He really wants to be thinner but doesn't know how..At the moment he is heavier than OFM so that is really not normal...

swanthingafteranother · 09/07/2012 09:37

Maybe the point is not to "teach" at all, but just let education happen. My uncle who had five kids and was home schooled himself by some fluke by my granny between ages of 7 and 11 used to say that education was "drawing out" - educere (latin!) not p"ouring in" knowledge. That is not to say he didn't sit at the table with "lessons" just that he had a different perception of education as a result of his own experiences in the 50's (in Sussex!)

What is that dog eating now? I wonder what shoe that piece of black leather belongs to Blush

MaggieMcVitie · 09/07/2012 09:59

Quick list dump then back later...

Ta da's
Boys (and friend) to school on time
Towels in TD
Load in WM

To do's
Ironing mountain - did extract (and iron) two school uniforms and a pair of jeans and a blouse for me this am
Clean bathrooms
Hoover/sweep downstairs
Parents evening for DS's
Get to bed at a reasonable time

DH is phoning a university this weekend to ask about a part time course he fancies doing - he's really enthused! Am hoping it is a positive phonecall, this could be the boost he needs Smile

LetThereBeCupcakes · 09/07/2012 10:55

Maggie ? you iron jeans? I am clearly a slattern. I hardly iron anything.

Not much on my Ta Da list as I am at work (boo!). But my To-Do list looks a bit like this:

  1. Walk dogs
  2. Clean stove
  3. Wash inside of kitchen windows (especially dog-nose-prints about 2 feet up)
  4. Wipe muddy skirting boads
  5. Cook dinner (baked potatoes. MMmmm)
  6. 15 minutes Decluttering
  7. find instructions for telephone and work out how to use answer phone
  8. charge iPod
  9. Post letter to Auntie.

I hope I still have energy when I get home. I?m 12 weeks pregnant so my energy levels fluctuate a bit!

Have a lovely day everybody.

ToffeeWhirl · 09/07/2012 11:00

Swan - I love your uncle's view of education Smile. The issue I have with the e-learning is that it is a 'pouring in' of random facts, which seem irrelevant and boring to DS1. And I have to say, I agree with him. Also, you are right - the tutting should not influence my decision making (and, after all, no one can say we haven't tried the conventional route). With regards to your son - maybe he had just got whatever he needed to get out of his system with you, so was ready to be obliging by the time your DH came along. It may not be anything to do with you personally.

Carpe - oh, poor things Sad. I hope you both feel better soon

ToffeeWhirl · 09/07/2012 11:01

X-posted, Cupcakes. I love the doggy nose prints!

feetheart · 09/07/2012 11:14

Need to Fly, need to catch up with thread, need to do stuff for School Assoc but still buzzing from super-early 5am start and being within 4' of Lewis Hamilton as he carried the Olympic torch Shock
Later got even closer and DS got his autograph. DS has looked like this :o ever since (as have I) though he was still cool enough to be interviewed live on 3 Counties radio!
Now need an Olympic-sized kick up the rear to get going :)

  • Cat litter (yuk)
  • Washing out (and fingers crossed)
  • Yr6 invitation sorted
  • Disco poster sorted
  • Pizzas sorted!
  • Ad in paper for Boot Sale
  • Make bolognese sauce, cheese sauce and ice-cream!
  • Visit poorly friend and teach her to play backgammon :)
  • Homework with reluctant children Hmm
  • Ironing mountain

Will try and calm down catch up later.

swanthingafteranother · 09/07/2012 11:17

alright, I have got distracted.

In the middle of tidying dd's room again so cleaning lady can hoover it
have decluttered bathroom in attempt to let that be deep cleaned
soaked loo seat in hot water, and loo brush
tidied ds2's room and tidied bookshelf/shelves
washing downstairs
wet washing hung out
socks put away

back to the fray!

Cupcakes I can remember at 12 weeks I started to feel a bit more energetic, it is a lovely time Smile

MaggieMcVitie · 09/07/2012 11:47

Cupcakes you're not a slattern at all - I just have slight ironing issues! Can't put stuff away without ironing apart from pants, socks, vests, sheets and towels. I have tried but it niggles away at me until I sneak it back in! I don't do creases down the front though Grin

Am at work being unproductive! Have one more hour until I can go home and hang my washing out - it'll probably start raining then!!

Toffee I second Swans advice about the tutters Grin

Swan DS always used to create merry hell with me anytime I tried him to get him to do his homework/spellings etc. I used to sit all calm and smiley and he'd whinge, cry and moan until I got really cross whereupon he'd sit there sobbing. Then DH would come in and take over and it'd be done in 10 minutes. DH thought I was impatient and too directive and I had actually got to the point where I thought I was crap at it! Until....DH has been off work and I'm on MN at work a lot more, and now he creates for DH and is all calm and willing for me Wink

sanguinechompa · 09/07/2012 13:10

Helloooooooooooooo!!

Thank you everyone for the advice/encouragement about the diet - v. much appreciated!

I've decided to keep going and will try to generate a bit more enthusiasm for it and do a bit better with the meal planning (which goes to pot a bit outside of term time). I think Blue and Swan are correct - it will be easier in summer and I will definitely regret it in Sept if I haven't given it a good go. First step is to try and coordinate with dh when he is here so that I can get out for good, long, fast walks.

DD had mahoosively long lie-in this morning until 9am Shock (was starting to get worried!) - she's normally up with the dawn and raring to go, no matter how late she went to bed the night before - think she is finally throwng off the shackles of the school routine and getting in to holiday mode. I then let her (as special treat) watch the mornng film on Flemish kids tv here (TV is banned normally during the day) and eat Nutella sandwiches for breakfast (normally also banned) so she's like a pig in mud or whatever the expression is. Oh for simple pleasures and all that ...

All part of my cunning plan to get a big chunk of boudoir sorted before we go out this afternoon and doing more washing and ironing for suitcases. Unfortunately slightly thwarted as spent a good hour and a half back and forth talking to solicitor/accountant/sisters about my late mother's estate. Oh well.

Must re-group and start again and make proper plans for today and rest of this week or else time is going to drift away with nothing much accomplished.

Castlelough now why didn't I think of that (telling people you are free in July but not in August even when your plans are not as yet set in stone) - an eminently sensible and simple plan! (I always over-complicate stuff!!) Will remember that for next year!! Thanks for spot-on riding suggestion - dd and I already go regularly to local stable here and when we visit UK we are planning to inscribe dd in one of those "look after and ride your own pony for a week" programmes at fab stables near my sister (in fact must get on with making those arrangements). Well done on getting through mega-list yesterday.

Feetheart Great to hear your ds had such a brill time seeing Lewis Hamilton bless him Smile Bet you will sleep well tonight!

Toffee yes, don't let the tutting of others influence your decision - as his mother you know what sort of education will suit your ds1 best. Good luck to your ds2 in his rehearsals and aw at his one line!! And well done re: your amazingly long list yesterday. Glad to hear your mil is well and truly settled in her new flat - can't believe it was a whole year ago since she moved in!

Hello again to Lettherebecupcakes take it steady [proffers comfy chair with footstool] Well done re: your shiny kitchen! Arf at doggy nose prints!

Maggie that's great to hear about your dh! Hope the course works out well for him. Ditto re: ironing "ishews" [SC looks slightly shifty at the mention of creases down the front of jeans]

Swan well done to your ds1 on his weight loss too (he has a very good role model in his mother!) So true about visitors etc. Can cope with bed and food provision and everything else - it's all the endless chauffering around that gets a little tiresome; especially in summer when Bxls is v. quiet and effectively closed for business. Some guests are great; pro-active, autonomous and just get on with things. Others just sit there and expect you to entertain them (and their dc) all day like my brother and his family. Need to follow your sister's example and develop some strategies I think.

Lauren have you got the new puppy yet??? [eager emoticon]

Oh no Carpe poor you - you have had a bad run with illnesses etc recently - hope you all feel better soon [proffers cream crackers and Lucozade]

Yay! Great to have you back Makingchanges!! Smile

Whoknows well done on putting all the camping stuff away so promptly - always a challenging task here!!

Hope you are hanging in there Elliepac

Rabbits proving to have v. distinct personalities. One never wants to be caged and rushes out the door as soon as it is open, to roam and hide in the garden all day and only comes back in very reluctantly/when food is in the offing. It always dragged half of the garden back in with it too - twigs and seeds and bits of old leaves stuck in it's fur. The other doesn't want to go out very much, constantly grooms itself and follows us around indoors all day and/or sleeps in a nest it has made in my stack of clean and ironed table cloths ....

Off now to follow Clare Balding web chat do some tidying ...

Mahoosive waves to anyone I've missed!!

WitchyBitchy · 09/07/2012 16:34

Today hasn't been terribly productive. Very small ta da list:
ds to school on time
meeting in nxt town
couple of hours on paperwork. -construction of.
afternoon school run
crochet - work on finishing project.

OverflowingMum · 09/07/2012 18:39

evening all
well, had a really hectic weekend - dd 3&4 dancing,ds1 bag packing,dd 1&2 horse riding....then summer fair which went on for ages as dc were doing different things in it which meant we had to stay for all of it Hmm
anyway...the result is NO FLYing and a house in chaos ...
add to that I had 2 major wobbles over weekend on body clutter front and ended up eating copious ammounts of rubbish and drinking wine Hmm
then for some odd reason dd3 and 4 woke up at 4am and were wide awake and chatting and giggling and playing Hmm so I had to get up to pursuade them to go back to sleep...
so of course all are totally exhausted now. DD4 is in full blown exhaustion/end of term melt down mode which based on past experience will last into the second week of school hols...sigh...
BUT I am now applauding my wisdom at booking off work Thurs/Fri this week and Mon/Tue next week as at least it will cut me a bit of slack to cope with the stress and chaos LOL
Right....now need to go play a game with DD4.....BBL with lists and individualsGrin

ToffeeWhirl · 09/07/2012 18:48

That sounds exhausting, OFM! What a good thing you have booked some days off Smile.

laurenamium · 09/07/2012 19:50

We have a puppy Grin he is called Ted, as in father Ted as I already have a Dougal Smile and he is a chihuahua Maltese cross! He's a little fluffy cloud!
