Miele or Sebo vacuum cleaner?

Destrier · 04/06/2012 18:06

Which would be best? Are they worth the cost. I have heard that the Sebo is not a proper Hepa filter... have you heard this?

I have a cheapish cleaner, but my carpets are just not getting clean enough...

Thanks!

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. After weeks of trawling the Talk boards, talking to parents and researching bestsellers, here are our trusted vacuum cleaner reviews to help you find the best vacuum cleaner on the market.

Hope this helps! Flowers

SEBO have refused to honour their 5 year guarantee on my 18 month old machine which went up in flames.

rabbit123 · 23/07/2015 13:47

You've said that 3 times, but did they say why they wouldn't honour it?

Usually, the only reason a company won't honour a guarantee is because of user error, not a machine fault.

Bubbshjs · 24/07/2015 15:48

I'm sorry to hear you've had problems Mike and I'm sure it was terrifying to have one go up in flames, but condemning Sebo and all their machines out of hand is a bit much.
I've just ordered a new Sebo so will wait before I can comment on the new one, but I LOVE my old one (Sebo C3.1). It finally died after 16years hard labour without a single problem. I chose it because I wanted a quality cylinder vacuum that also had a motorised head for beating the carpet. It had a good filter system for expelled air and that air is gently diffused around the machine through a padded 'bumper' bar (which saved my furniture when kids used the vacuum when younger!) so no nasty blasts of hot air and much less movement of other dust in the room. The tubes are much lighter than the Miele's which was important to me as I use my vacuum tools up high too for walls/ceilings/curtains/dusting etc. Love the triangular duster brush (though you need variable suction ideally for this as you don't want too much otherwise you pull the bristles over the suction hole) - great shape for corners. I also have a variable power control on the handle of my machine that I adore - had no idea how much I would love this until I had it.
The thing I would say that Sebos don't do well is edges - you will probably need to get out a tool for those on carpets. Also some models don't have a swivel hose (where it joins the machine), I think because of the electrical connection for the powerhead, so you sometimes have to detangle the hose. They are also heavier than other makes, but as I only carry it upstairs (it will stand on each step) and they have good handles that doesn't bother me (with the extension hose I can do the whole stairs from the ground floor too).
My Mum was so impressed by the difference in appearance of my carpets, that shortly after I bought mine, she replaced her existing hoover with a Sebo X4 Extra (she's an upright fan with a fully carpeted house) - also going strong still and my Mum's very happy with it.
My kids (now in their early 20s and in rented houses with other vacuum cleaners) ask me to bring mine with me when I visit!
Obviously there will be individual machines with problems, but one machine doesn't make a whole brand C**P. I'm surprised you've had trouble with them over the warranty but I assume they shared with you why they feel your machine isn't covered, so perhaps it would help this debate if you explained that here, Mike?
One naughty thought crossed my mind as I read your comments though - maybe they suck at warranty issues because they so rarely need to resolve them! ;)
I just hope your problems aren't symptomatic of a decline in quality in more recent years, but as I said I'll add something once I have my new one if I feel that's changed and also about the power reduction/Eco changes.

The other reason I chose a Sebo over a Miele was the ongoing cost of bags/filters. Sebo isn't cheap, but Miele is worse!

My old Sebo is only 800w and picks up way more than the 1400w Dyson & 2200w Miele we had. That's good design for you

Ours is 20 years old Paulie. It was a hand-me-down from my in laws who had bought a newer Sebo because it was lighter. We only intended to keep it until we could afford something newer, but it's so good we hung onto it. We've tried to replace it twice - once with a Dyson Animal and once with a Miele Cat & Dog but neither were as good. We're sticking with it until it gives up the ghost and then will buy the newer version.

I know this is an old thread, I posted on it years ago and said Sebo.

Ive still got my sebo and IT works fine but I am out of love with it. Have got a Dyson v6 cordless which is so much better.

rabbit123 · 28/05/2016 13:30

Simon, I have a challenge for you.
Put a new bag in the Sebo and go over your carpets with it. You'll be amazed what the Dyson is leaving behind

rabbit123 · 28/05/2016 13:41

I don't trust cordless vacs. I borrowed one last year. Fine for quick pick ups but certainly didn't clean as well as the mains powered vacuum. And for a top to bottom clean in a 4 bed, 3 story detached barn conversion? No chance - the battery ran out before I even got to the first floor

Ifiwasabadger · 28/05/2016 13:51

Miele are brilliant and it will last one thousand years.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/05/2016 13:52

Well I did it the other way round. Had hoovered with my sebo and went over with my new Dyson and was amazed what the sebo had left behind!

To be honest ive never had a noticable issue with the sebo not picking up.

My main complaint is the fact that thhe hose kinks all the time, to the extent it stops sucking. I spend more time Unkinking the jose than I do actually hoovering. Plus using the Dyson is so much easier than dragging a cylinder vacuum around. Especially the stairs! And it's so quick to use. Pick up and press the button. Not getting it out, uncoiling the hose, plugging it in.....im hoovering more now.

rabbit123 · 28/05/2016 14:42

Ah, you had a cylinder Sebo? Ours is an upright. I never found cylinders shifted the pet hair very well

burythechains · 28/05/2016 15:03

I need something that works with smeary long black soft dog hair on carpet. Would you say an upright Sebo or Miele. Everyone always talks about the cylinder Cat & Dog, but would prefer an upright.

butemum · 07/08/2016 19:40

We went from an expensive Dyson DC04 Brush control upright to a SEBO cylinder vac. My light blue SEBO K1 Komfort is presently nearly 11 YEARS OLD!! It has been a brilliant little vacuum cleaner and came with 3 main floor heads. The K1 is getting on a bit and because we live on the Isle of Bute, we didn't want to find our vacuum breaking down without another.

So, we went and bought another SEBO cylinder vac this year, even though I looked at other models in the range. The new 700 watt K1 is nice but it doesn't feel half as powerful as the 1200 watt version and the new E1 Airbelt "Excel" from John Lewis won us over on its newer shape and comfort touch cord rewind. It has 1200 watts and like the K1 its a good compact shape to work with and has a bit of a longer hose than our old K1. It is very quiet and the floor heads from the K1 also fit the new E1 which I love.

My sister was also convinced from years of being a Dyson owner but she bought a SEBO Felix Vogue. I have tried it but Im not a fan of uprights. It is powerful though. She owns a Westie dog and the Felix picks all the hair up without a problem. It also picks up stones and a lot of dirt from outside. Seems to be indestructible. The Felix does fall over though if you don’t keep one hand on the handle and another hand on the hose. I know that annoys her, but then it was the same with the other bagged upright she used to have, from another brand. An extension hose seems to have solved the problem.

butemum · 07/08/2016 19:44

HEPA filters - HEPA filters are actually worse than S-Class. They block the motor which then over heats.

annabellinctus · 14/05/2017 20:49

My Sebo is 25 years old and I have just had the belt replaced. It picks up really well still. Best machine I have had.
