what are these bugs in my bedroom and how do I get rid of them?

Over the last few days I've noticed these tiny black bugs on my laminated bedroom floor. If I've seen them they have just been hoovered but today I decided to inspect.

They seem to be in anything wood - I've emptied out my wardrobe, hoovered, disinfected and thrown out some shoes that had some in. I've thrown out my wicker bin as that was badly infested. I've cleaned out my bedside drawer, I've sprayed disinfectant along the skirting boards as this seems to be where they are coming from. The are also in my wicker laundry basket :(

I have no idea what they are, Google came up with nothing. I don't know what type of prevention stuff to buy because I don't know what they are. They are very small, black, don't jump or have wings.

Can anyone help?!

Try ant killer all around the edges of the room.

could it be woodworm? they are partial to wickerwork !

Psychopsilocybin · 17/05/2012 21:20

Thank you alwaysme we now know what it is.

Bit of a bugger really because everything is made of wood. I'll throw out the basket and invest in a plastic one (along with the replacement bin!) Might have to get rid of the wardrobe but will see how the treatment goes - borax is a good way to kill off woodworm apparently - then assess after.

It made me shudder to read they can be in your wood for years before you notice them Shock

I believe they are rarer in modern houses, because central heating makes the air (and the wood) too dry for them

This will not work if you drape wet washing around the house, though.

Look under furniture as the out-of-sight areas is where they mostly seem to live. If you have to spray it will be a real pain.

Piglet we are waiting for someone to come and see as I think they are coming from the attic. I've found a few above the window in the bathroom which is right next to my bedroom and along the same outside wall iyswim. I would say the place was built '30s or '40s.

Been avoiding hanging washing on the airer in our bedroom, we did see they like damp. Luckily its been nice enough for washing to be hung outside.

Oh dear, wish I had been wrong. I've never seen them in the flesh so to speak, just holes and the wood dust that they make.

Hope you get the problem sorted without to much upheaval.
