Fledgling flyers - it's the month of May: if your house is a mess, try the Flylady way

ToffeeWhirl · 30/04/2012 17:32

Welcome to the May Fledgling Flyers' thread. A very big thank you to WhoKnows for guiding us through last month.

Are you living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome)? Flylady's routines aim to help you take control of your home, tidying and decluttering and setting up daily and weekly routines that keep your home looking presentable. On this thread, we do our best to follow these routines (although we also chat quite a lot and sometimes forget why we're here Blush).

There are three methods of the Flylady system, depending on whether you are new to it or have been following it for a while:

  1. Babysteps
  2. Babysteps + 15 mins daily decluttering in current zone
  3. Babysteps + daily missions

Following the babysteps helps to establish daily routines and build a weekly plan.

Today's babystep is to shine your sink.

Morning all

Carpe, hope you all get better quickly.

Bitchy, good luck with the driving later.

Honu, sounds like a very busy bank holiday, make sure you schedule mumsnet time. Brew

Done

Morning routine
2 beds stripped and re-made
Washing machine on
Started book cull

To do
Sort out airing cupboard
Reorganise some boxes (15mins only!)

Trying to keep kids amused at the same time as they r complaining they're bored all ready because they can't go outside!

Better go and get on or I'll get dragged into a game of Snakes and Ladders! Smile

ToffeeWhirl · 07/05/2012 14:11

Shannara - congratulations! Smile

Having a lovely, home-based day today. DS2 is still in his pyjamas, playing with Lego. DS1 has his friend coming over in a minute. I had a long lie in this morning, thanks to nice DH.

To do:

Tidy our bedroom

OP posts:
BitchyInTheCorner · 07/05/2012 14:36

When will you know if you have the house for definite Shannara?

Sleep was good but not enough of it. I love driving and the drive I am doing is one I do a lot but love. So that is no bother. Lunch, shower and up. Then to tackle the list of stuff to do.

Will appologise now the 'e' key and a few of the other keys are playing up and sometimes going awol. Don't always spot they have vanished. Hope stuff makes sense.

Flyingwithoutwings · 07/05/2012 14:54

Afternoony Smile
Hope you're all having a nice bank holiday.
The sun has just come out so I'm tempted to take DS out to visit friends / family or take him to the park..

Oh, name change by the way, was Mummynickleby Grin but changed in honour of flying and the fact that I'm seeing Westlife soon Smile

In honour of a rare moment of viewing MN on the Mac... here's Wine for all.

CarpeJugulum · 07/05/2012 15:21

Bedding and bathmats done - just DS' to tumble.

Grass cut - wasn't on my list, but needed to get DS outside and be there but not involved IYSWIM!

Dinner (macaroni with bacon & onion) made and in dishes ready for extra cheese and baking in the oven. Don't know if DS will cooperate in the eating, but I have toast on standby! I also have garlic bread for DH and I

Not really feeling better but doing things to take my mind off the general crapness. Have ordered a crochet set and a new book from amazon - but am a tad grumpy that it's a bank holiday so won't get it until Wednesday Angry. I understand the historic reason for the holiday - but it's a PITA (and bankers hate them as well).

Ah well, need to clean up the kitchen now

ToffeeWhirl · 07/05/2012 16:37

Still tackling the bedroom. I just seem to be moving the mess around really. A lot is now on our bed. A lot more is in DS1's bedroom, ready to be packed away out of sight in the loft cupboards. It's scary to think we are simply piling it up elsewhere in the house, but at least it will be out of sight.

Engelsmeisje · 07/05/2012 18:20

evening all.

not done much flying today as have been at work (No bank holiday here. Ben jij in Nederland sanguine ?)

But did manage to...

leave my house in a respectable state for my MIL when she came over to babysit today
washing-up
DS in bed
bins emptied and ready to go out tonight

Going to head out and do the food shopping and fill up my car now so I don't have to waste time doing it tomorrow (and will have more time to MN and read the thread properly Grin )

Flyingwithoutwings · 07/05/2012 20:11

Evening Smile
Very little flying done here, have been keeping obsessively on top of washing as I'm going away tomorrow until Friday Sad
DS, 3.5, is potty trained but some days he has up to 3 accidents (fine on other days - depends how engrossed in something he gets).
So I've packed 3 lots of spare clothes in his nursery bag and have laid out 5 sets of clothes for 4 days...
Hope that's enough!!

DH doesn't know how to use the 2 months old relatively new washing machine Angry

swanthingafteranother · 07/05/2012 20:13

endlessly losing connections - I did try and post, honest Blush

so, a shortie now..
wiped worktops
visited mum
fry up for supper
cleaned out cat litter
took ds1 out for loads of fresh air, Dh took the others to West End for walking sightseeing

DH has persuaded ds1 to hoover his room! Wow! otherwise not a particularily good day Hmm But children in good spirits due to dh efforts.

Mud remains!

CarpeJugulum · 07/05/2012 20:15

Psst Flyingwithoutwings do what I did.

Laminate simple instructions.

Leave attached/above/beside machine.

Pray

Flyingwithoutwings · 07/05/2012 23:15

I'll do that for next time, top tip Grin

I've shown him how to do a "45 min" wash, that'll do for DS's pants and trousers if necessary Wink

I'll do a proper teach-in before the next time... Blush

How very 1950s... But if it was... I wouldn't be working Wink

ToffeeWhirl · 08/05/2012 00:02

Here are tomorrow's links...

Babystep No 8 - start your control journal.

Tuesday's reminders (and the mission - wipe down your kitchen cabinets) are here. It's 'plan and play' day, by the way.

Night all.

Hi flyers!
Could I join the thread please?
I have been seriously slatternly and really need to learn
a routine and having read down through this thread
I'm hoping I'll find the motivation!
Have left out my clothes for tomorrow...today's babystep.
Something I used to do, but haven't done in years. Then spend the mornings tearing around trying to find something that doesn't need ironing to wear...
The measure of my slatternliness: bought an ironing board two weeks
ago. After ten months of marriage i finally ironed my poor dh a shirt....
Looking forward to the babysteps!

CarpeJugulum · 08/05/2012 06:13

Welcome castlelough Smile Feel free to join in - you'll find most of us over in the naughty corner bar - full of good intentions and poor execution Wink

Well, today is swimming day. I haven't taken DS since before my gallbladder perforated exploded so am a bit apprehensive. I need to sort out swim bag Going with a friend and her DS so that will be cool - I'd like to make it a weekly event to shatter DS, but she's pregnant so it won't be for long. And I may give up in disgust as she's 6 months pregnant and still slimmer than me

Anyway, also need to do the usual morning routine and dust and hoover the living room.

Shannaratiger · 08/05/2012 08:10

Morning all

Just a quick visit. Welcome Castlelough, I think I've only ironed a handful of times in the 12 years we've been together!

Carpe - enjoy the swimming, hope DS is appreciatively tired.

To do

Fun Fit, volunteer local at Children's centre.
15 minute room rescue x 2.
Walk to the dentist, then pick kids up from friends. Hopefully no more toothache! Grin

Better go and put washing on. Blush

Have a good day everyone

Engelsmeisje · 08/05/2012 08:12

Morning all.

List for today (because if I write it here I have to do it)...

breakfast washing up
wash on
yesterday's wash away
clean stove top
start sorting out clothes (if I write this enough times I will actually do it)
put out paper for recycling
book ferry for trip back to UK
send present to friend
start planning mum's surprise 60th by emailing family
charge camera
hotspot 15 mins

Have fun swimming carpe Smile

Honu · 08/05/2012 08:17

Carpe I like your 'full of good intentions and poor execution'. That's me, absolutely - I so belong here!

After yesterdays marathon maths day (followed by a very busy evening just in case you thought I might have been slacking) I am just full of admiration at how much effort these pupils are putting into their revision. Am rather ashamed thinking back to how much I did for those same exams. I have a report saying 'Honu relies too much on her natural ability and not enough on sheer hard work'. Hmmm - not much change there except that the natural ability is wearing off with age.

As for flying, no natural ability there at all and none done yesterday, so house has, incredibly quickly, reverted to its normal state of tipdom. Timer being set now ...

CarpeJugulum · 08/05/2012 10:45

Morning routine done.
Living room dusted.
Swimming costumes located (not yet packed)
WAH job done
Big load of ironing done (god I love my iron!) in a spare 1/2 hour Grin
Now sitting with DS watching Mr Bloom Hmm

DS doesn't look like he needs a nap. Oh bugger. That's not good. We're swimming at 2 (so need to leave just after 1.30) so if it gets any later, he'll not have a decent nap, be grumpy and scream in the pool.

Going to try putting him down at the end of this; then pray!

Honu good luck with the timer - I use my phone for this.
Engels writing a list is more like hopeful thinking for me Wink
to everyone else.

Flyingwithoutwings · 08/05/2012 11:27

Morning all Smile
Currently on the train and nearly in Bristol.
No flying until Friday evening Grin
I shall concentrate on "finally loving myself".
And getting 3 full nights sleep... Bliss Grin

feetheart · 08/05/2012 11:46

Engels - I do write a list with the best of intentions but.........hmmmm.......the road to hell and all that :)
From yesterday's list I managed to get most of the ironing done and nothing else so today's list looks very similar Blush

  • Sweep kitchen floor
  • 5 mins on living room surfaces
  • Stuff into loft
  • Plant sweet-peas - if it stops raining!
  • Email to School Assoc people - need to think this one through as have some 'stuff' going on and need to sort it out - oh joy Hmm
  • More ironing
  • Salmon out of freezer
  • Leek and potato soup made
  • Get DC to finish homework
  • Brownies but no Beavers (still recovering from w/e I think :))

Will hopefully catch up later but waves to all.

feetheart · 08/05/2012 12:48

Toffee - birdcam is back online. Damn thing went off on Friday night and DC and I have been having withdrawal symptoms. Enjoy :)

sanguinechompa · 08/05/2012 14:18

Hello everyone! Hope all OK. Still haven't caught up with thread.

I'm definitely joining you on the road to hell as far as Flying is concerned this week Feetheart. Carefully listed 15 tasks that need doing in master boudoir and allocated myself 3 a day for entire week. Have not done one of them yet ....today will be make or break as 5 a day won't be realistic with everything else that's going on atm.

Still covered in plaster dust here.

So far today have been out to paint shop (twice), curtain shop (twice) and supermarket (twice) and in 30 mins it will be time for school run ...so looks like boudoir will have to be done this evening or I might just see you all in the naughty corner instead. Wil bring Wine!

Have at least done meal planning (cold lamb with sauted onions/courgettes/peppers tonight for supper) and have made meatballs and huge vat of tomato sauce for tomorrow and for freezer + huge vat apple compote. Also am reasonably up-to-date with laundry thank heavens.

Sorry for lack of personals yet again. Thank you to Toffee for links and huge wing flaps to everyone else ....

ToffeeWhirl · 08/05/2012 14:20

Oh, thanks for that, Feet. Will enjoy looking at that later.

A success to relate (nothing to do with Flying): DS1 walked into town with me today. First time in four months! Smile We went to the library and a couple of shops, then walked home. It's a major achievement for him and I'm so proud of him.

Am also very excited to now have my full kit for my 'bring forward filing system' Grin. I'm itching to get started, as I have boxes of papers and am forever piling stuff up in the kitchen hotspot area. Looking forward to getting organised.

Will hopefully get back here for a proper catch up later.

CarpeJugulum · 08/05/2012 15:47

Bring forward filing? Share please? especially if it will justify my stationery porn habit Wink

MoreCatsThanKids · 08/05/2012 16:29

Great news toffee about DS - have had similar 'break through' with DS who has slept on her own for two nights - first time for two years a while due to her anxiety over night time health issues and separation anxiety. Really proud Grin

Have done very little flying here but have been trying to takle kitchen table 'hotspot' as MoreCat3 keeps curling up on the damn table and thus tipping hotspot onto kitchen floor Angry

Very small 'Ta Da'
Two loads washing
Hot spot off floor back on kitchen table
Phoned bank re missing debit card
Phoned hospital re non appearance letter re DDs hospital stay which is next Monday
watched supervised council removal of old sofa chair and bed which no charity will take as we had stupidly removed safety labels (even though nothing really wrong with them and oldest item 14 years old :(
Watched 'Horrible Histories' as Home Ed for day

Have no idea what we shall eat tonight - need to do online shop but can't be bothered do on phone and DD is using laptop for more games research on her operation.

Have a good day everyone:)
