Fledgling flyers - it's the month of May: if your house is a mess, try the Flylady way

ToffeeWhirl · 30/04/2012 17:32

Welcome to the May Fledgling Flyers' thread. A very big thank you to WhoKnows for guiding us through last month.

Are you living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome)? Flylady's routines aim to help you take control of your home, tidying and decluttering and setting up daily and weekly routines that keep your home looking presentable. On this thread, we do our best to follow these routines (although we also chat quite a lot and sometimes forget why we're here Blush).

There are three methods of the Flylady system, depending on whether you are new to it or have been following it for a while:

  1. Babysteps
  2. Babysteps + 15 mins daily decluttering in current zone
  3. Babysteps + daily missions

Following the babysteps helps to establish daily routines and build a weekly plan.

Today's babystep is to shine your sink.

Blue - question for you. I just did a search on Wii Zumba and it came up with your name several times on old Fledgling threads, I was thinking about getting it, is it good? I'm after something energetic but reasonably low impact because of the pelvic floor problem.

BitchyInTheCorner · 17/05/2012 21:56

Oh bugger. Whoknows you have just reminded me that my wii zumba is still in its box unlooked at and unlove. Guess I need to fix that this wkend Hmm

Whoever asked about the training - firstly Grin secondly hahahaha I wish and thirdly it just seems a lot because I have comps coming up and had to have a significant time off due to injury. It should settle back down to a sensible level soon.

Just got ds in bed. training night for him so it is a late one. And he is growing so hurts a hell of a lot at mo. Makes for a lot of whining.

No flying here but celebrating a national holiday so i have a good excuse WinkGrin

Hopefully will be functioning tomo. at least that is the plan. spend most of the day asleep feeling ill. Hmm

Its nearly the weekend!!!!

ToffeeWhirl · 18/05/2012 04:09

Apologies for lowercase namechange - I hadn't noticed.

Have just woken up after falling asleep with DS2. DS1 had made himself a snack, then put himself to bed, as the grown ups were clearly off duty (his granny and mum both asleep and dad down the pub Blush).

Carpe - did you know you can bookmark your place on the thread? You move your cursor over the bottom of the last post and a 'bookmark' sign appears for you to click on. It changes to 'saved!' when you have clicked on it and then next time you open the thread, it will automatically scroll down to that place on the thread. Sorry about you missing your swimming today Sad. At least you had good intentions!

WhoKnows - Grin at the naturist's night. There is an annual naturist's party at the local swimming pool here. Funnily enough, it is not something I have ever felt the urge to go to.

Sad about Donna Summers.

Bitchy - Grin at Wii Zumba still in its box.

It's day 17 of the babysteps and you should choose a bedtime and stick to it.

Friday's 'flight plan', including the mission, is here.

The kid's challenge is to empty the bin.

Off to find a snack now before trying to get some more sleep....

OP posts:
BitchyInTheCorner · 18/05/2012 04:37

Snack and sleep sounds like a good plan but arses wrt the babystep. Its the one i need most and the one i suck at most. not even been asleep yet Blush

MaggieMagnolia · 18/05/2012 06:03

Up early this morning to make a start - do most of you post twice a day?
I think the plan is to shine the sink and do a bit of general tidying. Washing and ironing seem to cause most of the clutter actually Blush

CarpeJugulum · 18/05/2012 08:29

Maggie I post as often as I feel like - it's quite a useful place to mark off your to-do list so you feel like you've done something anything!

Anyway, today is ironing mountain day. I may melt!

Ack - DS screaming! BBL!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/05/2012 09:08

Morning all,

Maggie - welcome to the thread, post whenever you feel like it really. I post anything from zero to about 4 times a day, once or twice is fairly average for me. Some people just pop in once or twice a week, whatever suits really.

I'm feeling all behind bit no work today, so a chance to catch up. I need to go to town for errands and it's gardening club at lunchtime.

To do

Finish morning routine
small amount of paperwork
Town for errands
Hoover downstairs
Clear the area next to my bed, a small mountain of clean clothes and balls of wool has formed (I crochet in bed while watching telly)
Gardening club
Pilates DVD
School run, no activities today thank goodness.

CarpeJugulum · 18/05/2012 09:24

Back, but posting on phone so no personals as planned.

DS had had a minor altercation with his toe and a door jamb (obviously take after me Hmm )

Anyway, today is ironing day.

So my list looks like:
WAH job - waiting on office opening
Morning routine - still got to S&S, but DH was beard trimming so will gut it while DS naps
Ironing
Swimming with DS.

Then I'm working in the office tomorrow Sad but a day off looking after DS. Every cloud! Wink

BitchyInTheCorner · 18/05/2012 09:34

Thanks carpe much needed

maggie I post a lot of random crap as the mood takes me. I like having to account for my list. Makes me feel like I have attempted to do something. But then others I blatently ignore flying and am barely here.

Right today I have:
figure out where the hell I am supposed to be at stupid o'clock tomo morning.
Make sure I have ds' kit for his race tomo
Get my eyes checked in the next town. (hoping this might be part of the cause of my headaches but fear it is just me being crap at the baby step )
Rewash the abandoned and lonely load that is still in the washer
Get the load rewashed
wash bedding
go to bed at a reasonable time.
Consider other matters of flying.
Construct cottage pie.

BitchyInTheCorner · 18/05/2012 09:35

*get the load dried

I meant.

obviously needs more coffee to function today

BlueEyeshadow · 18/05/2012 09:55

Morning. Have got the washing out on the line, but waiting at the computer for a work-related email that may or may not come through...

Got some friends coming over for dinner tomorrow, so ought to do some flying at some point. Also some pre-cooking.

WhoKnows - I quite like Wii Zumba but I wouldn't call it low impact - it has as much jumping around as a real class. It's also slightly annoying in that it makes you work up from 20 min sessions before you can do the longer ones. You need quite a lot of space for it too, or you end up crashing into the furniture! It does give a good workout though. We have another exercise game called Exerbeat which is quite fun and more varied than Zumba and has some lower impact stuff as well as really good work outs. You have to be prepared for being patronised by it though!!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/05/2012 11:10

Blue - thanks, I've never been to a Zumba class, so wouldn't know what it involved. I don't want to go and try one now in case it was too much and I had to stop. That's one reason for thinking Wii, so I can do as much or as little as I like. Space around the telly we are very short on, the lounge is about 12" with furniture all the way round, so there's only about 6" square in the middle.

sanguinechompa · 18/05/2012 11:36

Morning all. Thanks for caffeine shot Carpe

Still in holiday mode chez Chompa

DD, myself and the rabbits have had a lovely Nesbit this morning. Have done morning routine, a bit more laundry and a bit of drawing/painting with dd. DD spontaneously emptied dishwasher without being asked Shock

Planning to do some fairly major decluttering in cellars after lunch with help of a poor, unsuspecting student to do the heavy stuff.

Maggie some people like to post a "to do" list in the morning and a "ta da" list in the evening for motivation purposes but it's up to you really - once a day, once a week - whatever suits! I find it helps to write things down because often you realise you have actually achieved quite a bit without realising it. On the other hand, I have been known to repeat the same list for a week until it was completed Blush Just use this thread so it works best for you.

Hope eye test proves fruitful Bitchy

Dd waiting - got to go -huge wing flaps to all! BBL

CarpeJugulum · 18/05/2012 12:14

Ooof...

Ironing done - facial at same time Grin now starting to make inroads into the backlog too, so at some point my whole house will be ironed Wink

WAH job and S&S also done, so just DS swimming. Don't know if I can be bothered really, but he'll enjoy it so even for 1/2 hour it might be worth it. Only bugger is that the pool only does public swimming until 3.40, so will probably have to wake him from nap Hmm. Will see how it goes. But MUST pick up a paper timetable as it's a faff looking it up on my phone -and leads to me misreading it and missing swimming for me

Right, lunch now!

foad · 18/05/2012 13:08

Afternoon all!

2nd load of washing in - 1st lot on line (ds wet the bed Shock)
Gym kit all ready to start Couch to 5k on Monday Confused

To do
Find supper
plant raspberries
finish cleaning bathroom
pack away winter coats Hmm
swish and swipe

Bitchy I'm too frightened to get eye test because I know they're going to want me to have bi-focals Blush
whoknows have you tried JustDance? The children have it and I have a sneaky workout on it every now and then...
Maggie Hello!

Right I'm off to boil my new kettle and have a nice cuppa before tackling the bathroom. happy flying everyone!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/05/2012 13:15

Foad - yes, we've got Just Dance 2 but I don't find it energetic enough really. When we got it I was less fit and it used to get me warmed up, but I took up running last year and am a lot fitter now, so it doesn't really do it for me plus I'm an old fogey who doesn't know or like half the music. I have had to give up the running so looking for a replacement. I have wondered about getting wrist and ankle weights to use while doing it, that would help.

I thought I had done a good job on the bathroom earlier in the week, but the lightbulb went yesterday and the new one is much brighter and showing all sorts of watermarks etc up Sad.

Just got back from gardening club, going to make a Brew then do my bedside pile and tackle pilates DVD before the school run. See you later.

foad · 18/05/2012 14:15

WhoKnows I think I am you a year ago! I know what you mean about some of the music - we have JD 1, 2 & 3 so I have a bigger choice Smile.

BitchyInTheCorner · 18/05/2012 14:18

Opticians was fruitful. contact lens prescription has been increased fractionally but will make a huge difference to my tired eyes. Aparently my eyes are trying to tell me I need to sleep Tbh my whole body is trying to tell me i need to sleep but perhaps now I will get less headaches with the new prescription.

haven't done much else as opticians in next town and I took some time to just be as this wkend is going to be crazy and I won't get the chance.

laurenamium · 18/05/2012 16:22

Hi all! I haven't done a great deal of flying today Blush

Ta da:

Worked from 7 this morning until 1
Washed dishes and put away
Will do mission as needs doing

I went to visit my mum this afternoon so haven't really been in the house (she goes to Marrakech tomorrow) I'm house sitting her house, dogs and my 16 year old brother from tomorrow until Thursday- whilst coordinating work and DD plus my own dog- oh the joys!

Also need to Hoover and dust before DD goes to bed!

Hope everyone's ok!

CarpeJugulum · 18/05/2012 16:50

AAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Got DS all ready to go swimming. Got to pool (next town as our pool doesn't have a baby pool) and it's shut for training. Which they have know about for a fortnight, but haven't told anyone about - no notices, update on web timetable - nothing!

Luckily it's not horrendously far from a soft play, so we ended up there instead. DS had just as much fun and is probably more knackered. He's now munching his way through a pizza with ham and pepper cunningly disguised under the sauce and cheese!

DH on DS duty tonight as I'm working tomorrow. Bliss - Wine !!!

BitchyInTheCorner · 18/05/2012 19:32

Ds is poorly. Proper poorly. All plans for weekend have changed completely.

I am fucking off training now instead of tomo as planned. Ds is fine with this as grandma is babysitter and she says yes to icecream easily. Grin Promised him a day curled up together watching films so flying will have to wait. As for half of my to do list that I was going to do tonight. It now no longer needs doing.

Hope you all have good evenings. Bar is OPEN!!!!! help yourselves!

CarpeJugulum · 18/05/2012 20:38

Not on to post anything, just to drink the wine. Grin

Hugs to your DS Bitchy (if that doesn't sound weird from a random Internet stranger Confused ) hope he's better soon.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/05/2012 22:18

Evening all,

Sorry to hear about DS Bitchy hope he feels better in the morning. Thanks for the reminder, I need to book a contact lens check too, I am running out of them.

Carpe, feel your pain re the swimming pool, ours is prone to shutting down at short notice because the boiler is knackered, they are a bit better at putting up notices on the website now, but we have had a few wasted journeys in the past.

Foad - I was thinking about buying the Abba Wii game (more my era!)

Lauren sounds as though you are going to be very busy. Does your mum live nearby or have you got a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to do?

SC - holiday mode sounds good, I could do with a bit of that, not long till half term now though.

Well, I have been keeping myself busy with light amounts of Flying. Went round town this morning feeling thoroughly fed up as I can't carry even moderately heavy bags of stuff at the moment and walking is uncomfortable. However I made a really good find in the local cheap shop - flock covered coathangers to stop your clothes slipping off. So I bought a whole load of them and spend a happy hour this afternoon replacing all my big fat plastic ones with lovely slim flock ones that take up less space as well as being non-slip. I also popped into Iceland and bought several packets of the frozen Greggs Sausage Rolls .

Also managed some lightweight decluttering this afternoon, of various plastic baskets in the kitchen that we chuck random bits and bobs in (screwdrivers, matches, instructions for blenders, that sort of stuff).

Off to put my feet up, watch ER and do some more crochet now. I am making squares for the MN blankets and have been pleased to find our friend from Droitwich on the threads too. And the ER, tonight I get to the first episode I ever saw, which will be good.

ToffeeWhirl · 19/05/2012 05:38

Morning all.

Today's babystep is to read Flylady's 11 commandments. Please note Number 4!

Today's routines are listed here. There are no missions because it's the weekend and you have done them all during the week... haven't you? Wink

Did my waking up at 3am thingy again, so am going back to bed to catch some more sleep before the house wakes up.

My to do list for today:

Shop for holiday Smile

That's all really. Day of working in the office. Oh joy.

Wanna go back to sleep - waaaaaaaaaaah!!! Sad
