Come inside for a Brew and a Biscuit and maybe even a Wine if the mood takes you.

A thread for chatter and nonsense Grin

Awww! He sounds so cute Scout. I still love it when my dcs climb in and snuggle down with me. Unfortunately I can only do it with ds if it is after 6am now. It is for the greater good though.

Toddler's wakings seem to happen between 2 & 4, tends to be around 3-ish, though. I often wonder if it's something in his sleep cycle -- it's surely not a habit because it's not every night (even when he was in his crib he'd randomly wake up around then and if I changed his nappy he'd go back to sleep asap).

carrotsandcelery · 14/05/2012 10:01

It could well be a light phase in his sleep cycle Scout. Sadly the only really "cure" is to return him, as you did, however nice it is when he is snuggled in.

I am having a rest and Brew and considering what to do for tea tonight. We have enough goulash for 2 ish and I wondered if I should give us all a smaller portion and pad it out with another crumble. Grin

I need to do a batch of ironing before I have more than I can cope with to do.

Morning all.

Another one here who remembers Windy Miller. I feel a bit Envy at your description of toddler cuddles Scout. It is lovely to have a little one to snuggle with!
When my cousins were little ( I was a teenager when most of them were born) they used to come into my bed occasionally for a snuggle if I was staying with them or them with us, especially K. I had a real shock one morning when she put her feet against my legs and I felt something ice cold - I mean really ice cold! It turned out she had bunny slippers that she loved so much she had kept on in bed and I was feeling the very cold plastic sole!

Actually guys, I could do with some support and gentle encouragement this morning. I was wide awake at 5.30am ( having taken ages to get to sleep despite keeping myself awake yesterday and being in bed by 10.30pm). Then I went back to sleep again quite heavily, did the "I'll just have another 5 minutes" thing when my alarm(s) went off and overslept! I've managed to have some breakfast and make the phone call I promised at 9.45am ( despite only waking just after 9.30am!!) but for 2 pins I could just go back to bed and pull the sheet over my head and sleep again. But I mustn't and can't of course. I have a working day in front of me and the longer I delay in getting on, the more rushed everything will be!!

carrotsandcelery · 14/05/2012 11:34

Oh dear Arti I know that feeling well. Lots of water and lots of fresh air usually helps. Try to stay away from too much caffeine or you will be in the same boat again. I also try to wind down for quite a long time in the evenings. It is not always possible but I have a better chance of sleeping if I do.

Thanks Carrots

One difficulty for me I think is that I am often teaching till 8.00pm, so allowing a long wind down and going to bed early don't exactly mix very well!

I'm still finding myself on a procrastinating/delaying tack despite a late start Blush.

I'm thinking actually, it's a bit like the perfectionist thing when cleaning. If I don't have my "ideal2 planned start to the day and feel I've "done well" with getting on with things, the tendency is to delay even more and not do anything!

educatingarti · 14/05/2012 12:16
Grin One good bit of divine intervention. Dad of one of my students has phoned to cancel tonight's lesson ( but will still pay me). They are City supporters and are going to the victory parade in town centre this evening. As it's only once in 44 years, I can see their point!

So I have less work to do which suits me fine after my slow start!

carrotsandcelery · 14/05/2012 12:17

I used to tutor at night and could never sleep after. I was the same after a parents' evening (even worse because I was always nervous and it went on until about 10.30 ish).

Can you train your body with a wind down routine? eg regular signals that it is bedtime, like you do with a baby? eg finish tutoring, camomile tea and low sugar snack, mumsnet, bed, book (no jobs)?

OP posts:
educatingarti · 14/05/2012 12:20

Yes, I might have to try and train my body a bit. I have potential 2 late nights where I do music group and another church group - stuff I really like and want to do, so that also makes the wind down a bit tricky!

Also often I get a "second wind" round about 8-9pm so it is tempting to get on with all the jobs I have procrastinated about all day then.

educatingarti · 14/05/2012 12:21

Tell you how "not with it" I am today!

I just made myself a cup of tea, then forgot I had made it and went and made another"

carrotsandcelery · 14/05/2012 12:22

I am experimenting with a new flapjack recipe. It uses bananas, apples and honey as the main sweetners with much less sugar than some recipes so I am hoping it works well. I will share the recipe if it seems worth trying.

Hi all, just lurking while I get some lunch. I seem to have hurt a muscle in my arm so can't do any heavy lifting. I have also been procrastinating all morning but I did manage to sort 1 load of washing to go in the machine (Will put it in shortly) and have updated my calender.

educatingarti · 14/05/2012 12:38

Hey Cats - glad I'm not the only one in the procrastinators club this morning!

educatingarti · 14/05/2012 12:38

Carrots - I'd be interested in your recipe if it works out.

carrotsandcelery · 14/05/2012 12:53

It is out of the oven and smells amazing. The two tests will be a) if it holds together and b) if the dcs, especially ds, like them.

Arti there is still sugar and lots of honey and fruit sugars in them so you would still have to be careful I imagine but it would probably be a much healthier treat.

They are also relatively low fat as they just contain 25ml of sunflower oil. It may all be too good to be true though.

Am back now, just been to make sandwich for me and toast for DD.

Scout19075 · 14/05/2012 13:51

I have one Toddler who's desperate for sleep but refusing to nap. I'm wondering if he's starting to drop his nap completely. Over the weekend he napped in the car, between windmills. Friday he passed out without getting up once. I know he wants and needs sleep, or at least a rest, but he won't stay in bed. I've given up after 90 minutes, thinking a nap at this point would kill his bedtime completely. MrScout might not be home tonight so I really need TS to go to bed for the night decently so I can finish the tidying up (toys, dishes, etc) and go to bed, too.

CatsSleepAnywhere · 14/05/2012 14:02

Scout I think DD dropped her nap sometime around 2.5. She now just has one on an odd day here and there so I never know if she will or not.
I think they become a bit unpredictable where naps are concerned. We did go through a stage where she would nap at 5 in the afternoon which wasn't ideal!

Scout19075 · 14/05/2012 14:16

His failing naps seem to coincide with going into a big bed. I was hoping he'd nap consistently until after the first two weeks of round two (those were a hard two weeks before, while my bod got used to the drugs). My PiL have offered to have us when I start -- I might take them up on it if he's going to refuse/drop naps.

carrotsandcelery · 14/05/2012 14:39

Scout it is the sort of age when they do drop their naps. You might be wise to go to your PIL for a while if you are going to have your own medical problems to deal with. Even the battle to try to get him to take a nap is exhausting. That stage nearly brought me to my knees without having any troubles of my own. Having other adults around would probably help a lot as long as your SIL doesn't cause stress for you all.

Scout19075 · 14/05/2012 14:44

He's got the tired whinge going on. I've put on The Maestro -- Toddler loves The Proms and it's the closest I have on the recorder.

carrotsandcelery · 14/05/2012 14:52

Can you work in a "quiet time" where his nap used to be Scout eg reading stories, watching a couple of Ben and Holly episodes, cuddling etc? If you are lucky he might drop off and if not at least you will both have had a bit of a rest.

OP posts:
educatingarti · 14/05/2012 14:57

Grin at toddler loving the proms. Sounds like if you could get some proms video and intersperse it with images of windmills, it would keep him happy for ages!!

I still don't feel awake! Confused

carrotsandcelery · 14/05/2012 15:03

Grin at the proms+windmill medley idea = TS bliss!

Scout19075 · 14/05/2012 15:28

His favourite Ben & Holly episode is called "The Elf Windmill." One non-napping day last week we watched it four times in a row.

Before his non-nap nap we had that episode and stories in bed.

Given up on The Maestro (not orchastra-y enough for him) and have just put on Creature Comforts (more for me but TS is now curled on my lap). I didn't realize, though, that C.C. is rated PG!
