Fledglings “March” 31 steps away from CHAOS and mess towards domestic success...

sanguinechompa · 28/02/2012 22:38

... well, a shiny sink at least!!

Welcome to the March 2012 Fledgling Flyers thread. Park your mops, buckets and microfibre cloths here!!

A huge "thank you" to Linzer for steering us all through February - not a small achievement Linzer considering your school run/teaching commitments and with your dh travelling so frequently.

If you're house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, whinging (in my case anyway Wink) and support along the way.

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, and as we are all at different stages we will be using one of the following methods:

Here you can, for one month:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More info here and here!

All long-standing members, intermittent returnees, lurkers and newcomers welcome!!

NickNacks · 02/03/2012 14:20

Hello!

I'm here and FLYing well but under extra pressure at the moment. Dh has had a small op on his foot so off work and on crutches. No help and actually needs lots from me- making all his food and drinks and fetching stuff. I'm so tired as still minding all day and seeing to my own three, hey ho such is life!

Today's list

Mop kitchen floor done
Car tax done
Sew cubs badges
Clean bathroom half done
Hoover stairs
Cubs run
Prep new mindees paperwork
Text new client
15 mins of putting clean clothes away (I have about 2 hrs worth!!)

sanguinechompa · 02/03/2012 17:04

Hello everyone - sorry to see loads of doctor/hospital visits and health-related posts on here today. I hope all of you who are ailing (and poorly family members) recover quickly. It is difficult to stick to routines when there is any form of malady to contend with - it always requires extra determination - just at the point when one is extra feeling cream-crackered and don't have it!!

Another to add to the mix. I woke virtually on the hour, every hour, to cough splutter and choke throughout the night last night and so begged an early doc appt this morning. I've been offered antibiotics but am wibbling about whether I should fill the prescription or not.

The rest of the day was spent expectorating my way around mobile phone shops in despondent fashion trying to find a particularly abstruse piece of equipment for use in the office without success. Flying on my part = truly dismalBlush Think "to do" list may have to extend over this w/e as well Blush

Despite Lent, think we may need to break open a few bottles of Wine Wine Wine tonight!!

Nicknacks sorry to hear about your dh's foot - sounds painful - and tough on you. I don't suppose you are able to hire a wheelchair for him are you? Over here (Belgium) we can get them within a couple of hours through the local pharmacy for about a Euro a day. I know this because I've broken my ankle twice and each time happened, dh had to leave me to go to on a long distance business trip. A wheelchair downstairs/ready meals in fridge/microwave proved the best solution for independent living!! But check the width of your doorways first.

Blue definitely yes!! All boring supermarket shopping counts as Flying. Sorry I didn't see your post earlier though. Would recommend an hour's pampering instead.

Jax crikey - sympathies with all the decorating chaos and dust. It's nearly 5.30pm here so just about time to legitimately open the Wine and pour you several large ones

You too JWM you are a brave woman!! An 'onslaught' of teenage girls is a terrifying prospect. (Although use same trick myself re: mass entertaining/returning invitations in one fell swoop (albeit with 8 yr olds). Here's some fortifying Wine Plenty where that came from and well done with lobby.

Take care of yourself Bitchy glad to hear your ds is out of plaster too

MummyNickleby good to hear you have caught up on sleep at long last and exercising = v. impressive. Need to follow your good example!!

Linzer good to hear you are contemplating some well-deserved pampering for yourself. Hope you have time to follow through!!!! [stern look]

Swan arf at alarm clock mix-up but hope you are not feeling too shattered right now (proffers Brew instead of Wine) C.ongrats on driving in the mist as I know it is not your favourite thing to do!! Tis great that you have such a concrete diagnosis too. Hope the treatment works swiftly and you start to feel better soon. In our friend's case they had to tweak the meds a bit to get the right combination - but after a month or so she was a different person.

[Awards golden feather duster to *Ellie's dh] Glad to hear the docs came through for your dd too and that you feel more reassured about the situation. If it proves to be reflux- you could try raising the angle of her bed by 15 degrees or so (telephone directories under head end) maybe worth a shot???

Another golden duster award to Honu (and Honu's builders for cleaning up after themselves properly!!) Your post puts me to shame (to think I am whinging about mere cough Blush) Your day yesterday sounds absolutely shattering - I'm amazed you manage to get any Flying done at all with everything you have to contend with - and then to follow it up with a maths tutorial is frankly heroic!! Hope you and your dh are not too tired today and that you can enjoy a slightly less pressured weekend. Oh no - have just read your penultimate para - sounds like you have a tough w/e of reorganising ahead. Good luck with it. Can you call on any help????

[Waves back at Justgettingonwithit as she sprints past]

Whoknows (and Swan) sympathies re stressful tennis lessons. Doesn't sound as though the system is set up for success - far too tempting for energetic 8 yr old boys. Funnily enough, dd's lesson is on a Thurs too but I am lucky in that's it' a mixed group - just across the road from here - no waiting around involved. Agree with you about fun aspects. There are so few group activities available where dc can just simply just relax and enjoy themselves aren't there? DD would love one extra-c activity that didn't involve having to follow a strictlly prescribed set of rules (v. traditional teaching here)

JWIM glad to hear parents evening went well. You sound v. organised on home front too.

You too Droitwich I confess to sitting down (far before 10pm last night) in the midst of a lot of mess!! Hope you aren't being too hard on yourself and are allowing for a bit of "me" time.

Chitchat stomach pains sound horrid. Hope you are feeling better today and managed to catch up on shut-eye x

Scatty you are NOT allowed to say you are a rubblish Flyer on here!! Oh no!! Especially after posting v. respectable "ta da" list. YOu got loads done (especially considering you had long day at work)

Off to cook supper now - back later with steps

[Leaves large crate of Wine available in naughty corner for one and all]

done
dentist - another £££ crown and filling
doctor - vitamin D required too apparently - darn those Irish summers! Consultant also said I needed sunshine holiday! Grin Gardening, running after borrowed dog and sleeveless tops may be the answer this year...

Dh was at home today to help but so far he is helpful but sleepdeprived and grumpy Shock He just put 4 enormous muddy potatoes on to boil, denouncing the veg box scheme, before I pointed out that you usually have to wash potatoes before you cook them. I think years of lovely tiny supermarket potatoes have warped him.

Nicknacks oh dear, I thnk you should award yourself a bouquet of red roses. Could you install him with a thermos and some sliced bread/cheese etc.

Bitchy glad the cast is off; that is brilliant!

SC very many commiserations and I hope if tonight bad sleep continues you will get antibiotics. Also try the cocoa trick (contains magic anti cough ingredient as I think I was banging on about last year) I find it v difficult to sleep if I'm worrying about thngs too.

Linzer Ds was up early to get on a school minibus to Gatwick and Roma Grin we haven't heard anything about their safe arrival yet, but I think it is just school won't tell us until they safely installed in hotel. The phone rang at 3pm and I thought it would be Ds1 saying in chirpy way, Guess What Dad, We are Still at Gatwick because Easy Jet flight is delayed.. (Maybe I should just look on internet to set my mind at rest)

JWIM sleepover hell approaching here too. Dd wants a sleepover to follow a party (she is 10) with only some of the guests stayng. I can't for the life of me face putting two events back to back, so will have to stagger the entertainment.

GrownUp2012 · 02/03/2012 18:25

Hello. Last night I had so many plans to finish off my list, but ended up crashing in bed as was hit by a sudden wave of exhaustion, think taking the kids for a long walk (to get my meds) and playing in the park on the first proper sunny dry day knocked us all out a bit.

Not had one minute today to FLY either, I made the beds behind us and that was it, had to rush out to catch buses and get DS over to the hospital for his hearing test (bag was packed though, so grab it and run job), and by the time I got home it was 1pm and I crashed and slept for an hour and a half, which I seem to be doing a lot, but letting myself off because I have another UTI and have been taking twenty tablets a day for my kidney and joints, and nearly half of them have sleepiness or fatigue listed as a side effect.

Just going to shine my sink tonight and start fresh in the morning hopefully. FLYlady makes dealing with everything on top of chronic pain and illness much more do-able, I just have to find a way of stopping myself feeling guilty when I can't do as much as I would like to do and not compare myself to what other people can do.

MummyNickleby · 02/03/2012 18:54

Evening Smile
I struggle to reply individually to people as I'm using my phone to log on (keeps prying eyes away Wink )
So big waves to all Smile

I haven't exercised since [cough] 2003! Had a few health issues that caused me to go from a 6-8 to a 16 Blush
I turn [cough] 40 in December Sad so am determined to be a 12 (or less).

Although... We decided to try for number 2 last week.... I calculate I was "ripe" on wed... Bizarrely... My boobs are aching today (my only symptom with DS).. I have endometriosis but could we really be this lucky? We have been having rumpy pumpy every other day Blush

But boobs might ache due to exercise I suppose Wink

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/03/2012 19:16

MummyNick - ooh, how exciting, you never know! Might make getting into a size 12 at Christmas tricky though! I started exercising properly this time last year after years of slothdom and it has taken a while but I do feel it is part of my routine now and have kept at it (albeit with weeks off here and there for a variety of reasons). I would also like to shift a couple of stone and get rid of my size 16s, so I have decided to try and make my diet more low GI.

SC - thank you for your lovely roundups. Agree that unstructured activities would be nice sometimes. Hope the cough improves soon.

Not too much Flying today, lets make a ta-da list

Morning routine - done
School run - done
Pop to shops - done
Pop in to see friend on way home - done
Go for a run - done
Go and see another friend for coffee - done
Go to school and run gardening club - done
Lunch and watch Neighbours - done
Finish crochet square for MN blanket - done
Tidy kitchen - done
Test smoke alarms - done Important
Back to school to help with cake sale - done
Home, get DD ready for a party, luckily her friends dad has taken them both - done
Get DS's tea - done
Play football in the garden - done
15 mins of OU work - done
Send DH out for takeaway - done

OK, so not much Flying, but it has been a nice, sociable day. Glad its Friday.

MummyNickleby · 02/03/2012 19:27

Am trying to eat less / better too. I'm doing 3 classes a week (Zumba, LBT & body pump). Plan to do a normal gym session on a Monday from April, my parents often take DS out for a couple of hours.

NickNacks · 02/03/2012 19:35

mummynickleby how exciting!! :)

sc I don't think we'd get a wheelchair around our house. We have a ridiculously small house with too much furniture.

Today's list

Mop kitchen floor done
Car tax done
Sew cubs badges done
Clean bathroom done
Hoover stairs
Cubs run done
Prep new mindees paperwork done
Text new client
15 mins of putting clean clothes away (I have about 2 hrs worth!!)

SIL is taking ds1 and ds2 out tomorrow so dh and I are going to get him out into some fresh air, not sure what yet. Any suggestions ?

Will post a list in the morning - I do my home bleurgh on a sat morning so will mostly be that.

Have a wonderful date night everyone ;)

sanguinechompa · 02/03/2012 20:30

Respect to those of you who are exercising/weight-watching ...I really admire you for keeping up with the exercise Whoknows and am impressed by your X3 classes a week MummyNickleby.

(How exciting about your news btw MummyN - have fingers and toes crossed for you and your oh!!!)

I've had the most appalling start to Lent weight wise (and Flying wise) although I think the two often go together!!. Lost 2.5 kg while I was in UK. Returned to continue my love affair with Belgian bread and put it all back on again. Then had bad flu and lost 1.5 kg then recovered and have now put that back on again!!!

And I haven't managed to stop drinking yet either - (dh and I keep saying "this will be our last night"). It would have been my late mother's birthday tomorrow so will probably have a tipple in her honour too. Then we MUST stop until Easter ... Need to shift approx 12kg.

Trying to think of crutch-friendly things you and your dh could do together tomorrow in the fresh air Nicknackscan only think of horse driven carriage drive or golf cart drive around a country park. Or canal/boat trip (if he can hop on and off ok)??? Probably not much help!!

Grownup2012 you definitely definitely qualify for a temporary Flying dispensation given pain and side-effects of meds. Tis good to listen to your body and SLEEP!! Good to know the Fly system is helping though. Hope you can get a bit more rest over the coming w/e. And top marks for that shiny sink.

Thanks for cocoa tip Swan (sadly don't drink milk but will look in to subsitute). Here's to a sunny spring and summer for you!! And hope you hear from your ds soon and that he's arrived safely.

Honu · 02/03/2012 20:36

Well, after yesterday, have had a severe attack of cba / nesbitting / procrastination and am not nearly as far on as I should be. Early this morning I had about 2 hours of rabbit-in-headlights at the size of the task but had v strong cup of coffee, gave self a severe talking-to, and have managed quite a bit of work, although not nearly enough, in 15 min chunks. You know what she says - don't get too much out at once. Forgot that! She was right though.

Decided to test washing m/c and all seemed to be going nicely until I opened a cupboard door and found water on the floor of the c/b. See, I was right not to get round to filling all the cupboards Grin . Plumber came back to mend it, so now need another carefully-watched load tomorrow.

Nicknacks what your DH needs is a knee scooter. Like a kids' scooter but with the platform at knee height so the weight is taken on the knee and the poorly foot rides gently behind on the platform. I have an American friend who had to rest her foot for 8 weeks and she used one and said it kept her mobile. I lost half a stone running around after DH but have put it back on with comfort eating Blush.

sanguinechompa · 02/03/2012 20:37

Tomorrow's baby-step (no. 3) for Saturday March 3rd 2012 is here - do what we have already been doing. Shine your sink and get dressed to lace-up shoes. Suggest that you avoid the big tent though or you will be inundated by e-mails!!

No missions or zones because it is the weekend

If newcomers fancy it, they could cast their eye over the Flylady site www.flylady.net/c/lp.php here and perhaps look at detailed cleaning lists or next week's flight plan (once website updates itself)

Saturday is family fun day. More details here

Have a good one everybody!!

Hello everyone - I have had an epiphany! Have decided that, as I barely manage to flap let alone fly on Fridays and Saturdays, I won't! I will potter around cooking, baking and gardening with a bit of decluttering and fly from Sunday to Thursday.

SO bar is open. I have added a few beanbags (big squishy ones) and reclining deckchairs so there is plenty of room for everyone. Should we add a sun room for the summer?

sanguinechompa · 02/03/2012 20:43

Honu a strong cup of coffee and a stiff talking to is going to be the order of the day chez chompa tomorrow morning!! Well done for soldiering on today with work.

Hope you can sort out w/m soon - without too much mopping!

Waves to Ellie Linzer and everyone else.

Right, going to go and tidy up supper (inspired by Masterchef last night we had Thai fish curry) shine that sink and triage some laundry before bed.

Enjoy your evenings everyone!

Sounds like a plan MummyD!!! Grin Hope you can put it in to immediate effect!!

[wields cork-screw]

(I've reserved Tuesdays as my personal day for sewing and art and it's working OK so far but have to be ruthless about it - very easy to fritter away otherwise. Realise I am v. lucky to be able to do this -but worth it even if only a few spare hrs available per week - makes your more efficient at doing all the chore stuff ifyswim)

Definite yes to sun room with 'reserved' bean bag for Swan!!

After all my vowing to be Fly Baby of the Month I've really let myself down. House is worse than ever! Still tomorrow's another day Wink

I think I need to lower my expectations!Grin

I have done a bit of weeding and swept the garden path though!

LinzerTorte · 02/03/2012 21:14

Evening all,

House still not great and I'm quite annoyed about losing out on some potential work (potential client decided to go for an Eastern European agency that offered "ridiculously cheap" prices Hmm), but I've gained two new English pupils, have lovely manicured nails and DH has arrived home after his four days away. Smile

Off for an early night now, as I want to be at the hairdresser's at 8 am tomorrow so that I can be seen straight away. Grin

sanguinechompa · 02/03/2012 21:30

You and me both Neenook¨!!!

Don't worry - we'll get there Smile

I know this is a particularly vomit-inducing phrase but F.L.Y does stand for "finally loving yourself" ie no looking back, no guilt, jump in where we are at, have realistic expectations, no perfectionism, do routines as quickly as poss to free up time to do other more interesting things instead.

So pat yourself on the back for sweeping that path!!!!!

Otherwise it's too easy (as I know from personal experience) to get swept down in to spiral of guilt = being overwhelmed = procrastination = feeling even more overwhelmed = procrastination = complete standstill

OK you've guessed it - I'm typing this and procrastinating now rather than descending to laundry of doom Wink But underlying theory is sound !!! Grin

Perhaps we need to borrow pointy sticks from other Fly thread??

It's Friday GrinGrin. Peace and quiet reigns here tonight. DD in bed, youngest DNiece is sleeping over (first time she has done so, my BIL is a little PFB) so her and ds are tucked up with popcorn and dvd and dh has a new computer game so I am quietly sat in living room enjoying utter peace.

Ta da list is embarrassingly short but :-

food shop
mopped living room floor
sink shined
had bath
made dinner (cheated really, salad bar from morrisons Blush)

Another vote for sun room here seeing as i spend a lot of time in naughty corner. Inspired idea dwm.

sc how the bloody hell do you triage laundry Grin

linzer Sad about work. This happens a lot in dh's line of work as well.

neenook low expectations are the key to survival.

Am going to get an early night.

The tricky relative has been and gone . The gardener sorted the garden first thing this morning and I dashed round the house, room rescuing and crisis cleaning like crazy. Obviously, my relative (yes, Swan, it is that one) made some critical comments, but nothing too bad. The nice thing is that I now have a very tidy house and garden to enjoy this weekend Smile.

Swan - I'm so glad to hear you have a diagnosis and that something can be done to help you feel better. That's brilliant news. One of my best friends has thyroid issues, but she never has any trouble because she takes her meds and everything's fine. Hopefully, that will be the same with you. I think you should definitely take your consultant's advice about taking things easy and getting a cleaner. Hope you hear from your DS soon too. I would be waiting by the phone if I was you!

Honu - Shock. What a nightmare day! You must have been exhausted.

Mummy - oooh, I hope there's another thread baby on the way .

Linzer - sorry you missed out on some work. Grr. (Gardener really is quite tasty, by the way. I have asked him to come back regularly Wink).

SC - make sure you go back to the doc and get checked if you don't feel better soon. I know several people who have succumbed to bronchitis or, worse, pneumonia following a fluey illness.

Bitchy - glad DS's plaster is off.

Sorry, but I have to get DS1 to bed now, so can't do anymore personals, but to you all.
