need a new hob - what do you think of induction

Hello, we have 2 children 9 & 11 and the eldest has started cooking at school. Our hob is dying so the guy in the shop today suggested induction. I was bewildered since my last hob lasted 20 years! I am not really in touch with any modern technology (bar my laptop and ipod of course). He suggested they are safer.......what do you think? I was actually thinking of gas but worried the naked flame would ignite a child!Any opinions very welcome.

I haven't got one but whenever I have the money to replace my kitchen, I will definitely be getting one. I have a good friend who has one, and one of my BF cooked with one on holiday - both say that they are brilliant. Bear in mind though that not all pans work on an induction hob this explains which work and which don't. My friend had to buy a whole new set of pans when they moved

i LOVE my induction hob. heats fast, the surface doesnt conduct without a pan on it so if it gets put on accideently it does nothing, it cools very quickly, it is really simple to clean as you cant really burn anything onto it.
love love love mine.

We've had one about a year. I love it! It's an Ikea branded one, easy to clean and really easy to use.

We got a gas hob when we refitted our kitchen last year because a 5 ring induction hob was so expensive. My friend got one and goes on and on about how wonderful it is, and now I wish we'd have paid out for the induction hob.

I have hob envy Envy.

DON'T do it! We moved into a house with an induction hob and I'm itching to replace it. The hob itself works fine - the problem is that the only pans you can get to work on it are not good quality... except le cruset - but the set of le cruset I have doesn't have lids.

Our lovely griddle, wok, omelet pans, etc, etc won't work on it, and all the half-decent pans I've thought of buying aren't induction-compatible either. grrrr.

I'd go for gas hob any day... but we don't have mains gas here Sad

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/02/2012 18:37

mine is brilliant. Have pans from john lewis and they are good quality. It is way faster to heat water than my kettle, easy to clean, stay cool to touch and uses much less power than my old cooker.

I love it!! I think it is really really good.

Well impressed. We've had ours for nearly two years.

I love my induction hob, it's not quite as adjustable as gas, I got decent pans from TK maxx fairly cheaply, it cleans like a dream - squirt of mr muscle and a piece of kitchen roll.

JenniferLaunders · 03/02/2012 18:49

I'm in love with mine - mainly for the easypeasy cleaning, but it does a good job cooking too, although not it's quite as quick to alter a temp as gas I find.

You can put plates to warm on a really low setting. I also got the correct pans from TKMaxx. Would choose it again every time.

RandomMess · 03/02/2012 18:52

never thought about warming plates with it...

how do you get the hob to stay on...

schmalex · 03/02/2012 18:55

I loved my induction hob. At the moment I have a gas one (new house) and it isn't as easy to control. I used to be able to melt chocolate directly in the pan without it burning on my induction hob.

They're also very energy efficient.

If you're shopping for pans, take a magnet with you. If it sticks to the bottom of the pan then it'll work on an induction hob. There are lots of good quality pans that work on induction - most stainless steel ones do.

I'll be getting one as soon as we redo the kitchen!
