Advice please, how to clean stained toilet

I'm sure I saw a thread on this here recently but I can't find it. Anyway our downstairs loo has dark (it's stained limescale) deposit in the bowl, and a yellow stain around the rim - above the place where you squirt the stuff under the rim, it's all along the rim itself.

This toilet is the worst one as my DS uses it before going to school, forgets to flush in his eagerness to save the planet, and the wee sits there all day.

Any hints you could pass on to me?

Another vote for vinegar, it needs to be in for a good long while so we 'shut down' a loo for 24 hours.

CavemanDave - 'The boil a kettle' worries me a bit. Do make sure if you are using hot water it isn't boiling. I put near boiling water down the loo once (long story) and it was fine, did it a second time and the pan cracked and we had loo water cascading through the floor and dripping into the kitchen. It was not funny. The pan had to be replaced much to the amusement of the plumber. Blush

Avoid having the water too hot!
