I want white bathroom tiles, seems an unpopular decision?

We are completely renovating our horrible old bathroom. It got so rundown that u could barely keep it clean so I am so pleased that we are finally doing it.

It's quite a small room. Contains bath, shower over bath (no room to have seperate shower but can put in slightly bigger than standard bath to make showering a little less cramped), sink, loo.

I've gone for modern but not too 'out there' with my choice of bath, sink, fittings etc. everything is white, taps, shower, towel rail all chrome, massive mirror over the sink. Dark grey tiles for floor. I think I will go for grey striped blind and grey towels but want to get everything finished before I make a final decision in these.

Anyway, I had chosen large white tiles. Two walls will be tiles (the ones behind the bath), the other two will be painted either white or a grey. I am getting a lot of odd looks from friends and family when I mention the white tiles.

I was thinking white tiles would be classic, simple and fairly timeless. Comments I have had from others are "boring" and/or "cold".

Any opinions would be gratefully received!!

Gah where did that text speak 'u' come from? I meant 'I'.

We did our last bathroom in all white tiles with a very thin black border 2/3 up. It looked very good. We had black Karndean lino with a chrome towel rail and a white blind. All my accessories were black and chrome and I got lots of complements when we had the house up for sale.
It looked very clean and modern.
i wouldn't worry what your friends and family think- It's not their bathroom.

GlaikitFizzog · 22/01/2012 15:02

Our bathroom is tiled in white brick tiles (not our choice we inherited it) and I would steer you away from white. I have to bleach the grout every week to keep it as white as the tiles. What about a stone effect tile like a limestone with a grey grout. I'll try to find what I mean!

BlackCatTryingToFly · 22/01/2012 15:05

I have white tiles in my bathroom but we have a border half way up which adds a bit of interest. It was decorated by the previous owners. The border has silver and black squares and a silver line at top and bottom.

I think if I was decorating with white tiles I would say use a border or some patterned tiles in with it.

PigletJohn · 22/01/2012 15:05

some people just love the look of a public convenience.

charnwoodnamechanger · 22/01/2012 15:10

Piglet- I've had several comments like that from my MIL. I've been taking more of the tiles in public loos and restaurants since. They haven't all been white!!

We have them in our year-old bathroom, we like them. There is lots of chrome and bottle green around too (vaguely 1930s inspired). Have whatever you want, I certainly think it's preferable to the beige travertine mania that was ubiquitous when we were deciding.

partystress · 22/01/2012 15:15

we have recently done en suite in large white tiles on walls and floors, with mosaic style black/grey/silver border half way up wall. I think it looks fab, but had never realised how many dark pubes one grey haired couple moult Blush. floor NEVER looks completely clean.

pepperrabbit · 22/01/2012 15:20

We have just had a very small shower room completely tiled in those large white tiles. I've a brown/cream/glass mosaic border halfway up to break it up. Cream tiles on the floor - not quite a pattern but not quite all the same colour - there's a word for it that escapes me at the mo!
I've had the tiles laid horizontally and stacked (not brick) which makes it slightly more modern (apparently Hmm).
It looks great, simple and clean - though without the border I do think it would look very stark.

TheScottishPlayer · 22/01/2012 15:46

We've just had our bathroom tiled in white (round the bath area) and I'm perfectly happy with it. I broke it up with a vertical border on the wall adjacent to the length of the bath. Our walls will be painted a greyish blue and we also have a dark grey floor so I think your plans sound great Grin

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what someone else thinks, so if you like it you should go for it.

sandycloud · 22/01/2012 15:53

we have big white tiles in our bathroom with some small blue glass tiles as a border. no one has ever commented that it looks boring. don't have a problem cleaning it either, the bigger the tiles the less grout. it looks bright and fresh. have laminate floor. kids squirt toothpaste everywhere but not sure any colour tile would hide that....

Catsmamma · 22/01/2012 15:53

if you like it then go for it.

I certainly like a white bathroom, and it's very easy to ring the changes when fashion colours come and go....a lot cheaper to replace towels/ accessories than tiles

I have big white tiles in the shower, smal black and white mosaic to break it up, and tbh the whole mosaic thing has dated, and matt white tongue and groove wood all over the rest. Chrome acccessories, and black towels and white towels.

I think colours in bathroom always date really badly and quickly, no sooner are they in than they are out! Remember how everyone lusted after avocado and whisper peach...dearie me!

ExitPursuedByaBear · 22/01/2012 16:00

We have white tiles in the shower and on the wall behind the sink, but with a border of mosaic tiles about 1" square in all different colours at about 4'. The rest of the walls are tongue and groove painted in F&B Blackened (white with a bit of soot Confused) and the walls are painted F&B palma grey (which is a bit blue). We had white tiles in the shower in our previous house as well. We have no problem with discolouration of the grout.

Go for it!

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 22/01/2012 16:01

I think it can look good... You could give it an up to date feel by using a grey grout which might be quite practical as well... Use the non tiled walls to add some more warmth or colour...

KirstyJC · 22/01/2012 16:05

White is great in a bathroom, ignore them and go for it! We did our last bathroom in white and have just bought white tiles again for this house too.

White is timeless - other colours look fashionable, therefore become unfashionable. White goes with everything - you can paint the walls whatever colour you like and it will still go with the tiles.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 22/01/2012 16:22

I'm looking at bathroom tiles too and want to do it in white :) Can anyone who has bought their white tiles let me know which ones they chose (actual colour and size)? I want a definite white and want to avoid the 'public convenience' look too...

OP - I'd ignore them, if you get it right it looks really good & fresh.

2kidsintow · 22/01/2012 17:38

We bought white tiles for our bathroom and put a border in of purple mosaic tiles from B&Q. They come in large tiles on a mesh and are easy to cut into the size you want. They do different colours.

We have the border starting high by the shower, then stepping down every couple of tiles.

I hadn't wanted white, it was my DHs choice, but it looks fresh and clean and not too 'fashionable' in a way that means it will date quickly.

bobbledunk · 22/01/2012 17:46

I have white tiles, as long as you give it a good wipe everyday and give the grout a good cleaning once or twice a week they will look lovely.

Mollymoomoo · 22/01/2012 19:53

I have white with some mosaics, never tire of white. The walls are painted and i'm bored of that!

We did use mould free grout, much more expensive but oh my it is fab, no scrubbing the grout.

BendyBob · 22/01/2012 20:02

White is lovely imo. You can change the look with different coloured towels and accessories. I'd like to have some of those matt tiles next time to save on all the polishing that I never do.

cece · 22/01/2012 20:03

I thought white tiles were fairly standard aren't they? With some sort of border. A large percentage of my friends have this, inlcuding me.

Grockle · 22/01/2012 20:09

Mine are all white with a blue moasic border half way up to break it up (and silvery-white amtico floor which always has toothpaste splodges on it). No problem with grout and the tiles always looks clean. When I moved 18 months ago, most bathrooms had white tiles which is what I prefer anyway. It won't date.

stepmad · 22/01/2012 22:07

Mine are white with a black border around the middle to break it up with crome fittings i can jazz it up just by changing the colour of the towels and the bath mat

Carrotcakeisace · 22/01/2012 22:15

I have white tiles with a thin turquoise mosaic border at window height. I like that you can change the shower curtain/ accessories and change the whole look

Oblomov · 22/01/2012 22:30

We went to Topps Tiles and chose ours today, for our downstairs toliet.
white tiles, silver mosaic border, beigey for floor. Hoping it will look nice.
