This was a mistake, a big mistake! I was using up a piece of fish that has been in the freezer for ages that I thought was haddock or trout.
DH ate it but took the fish out, DS ate it (well most of it), I had egg on toast :)
How do I get the smell of mackerel out of my house?
Please help me

Put a bowl of water in the microwave with a lemon cut in half on full power for three minutes and also rub furniture polish on hot radiators.

would lemon juice work? I don't have any real lemons, or furniture polish

light some candles.

Rub a little bit of fabic conditioner on the radiators.

Freshen carpets with Neutradol (doesn't smell great but brilliant for counteracting other strong smells)

SilverMachine · 19/01/2012 22:45

Sorry, fabric conditioner!

vinegar is a natural deodoriser and absorbs all sorts of smells. either spray white vinegar into the air or leave a couple of little bowls (i use ramekins) of white vinegar in affected rooms.

surely rubbing fabric conditioner or furniture polish on radiators will only add to the smell, i can't see how they would take away the smell.

Oh yes...someone raved about a smoked mackerel risotto and gave me the recipe.....so so wrong. And in fact it has put me off smoked mackerel forever!

Open all the windows and pray for wind! :D

Wailywailywaily · 20/01/2012 09:20

Right, I lit loads of candles, opened all the windows and microwaved lemon juice ( sorry didn't try the fabric conditioner/furniture polish, I just don't fancy that one)
This morning I'm not sure if the house stinks or not as we have just got used to it. Lets see if I wretch when I get home from work Hmm

Never, ever is mackerel entering our home again

ever!

My mother swore by wiping down the kitchen surfaces with diluted vinegar. She always did this after making us fish and chips Smile. (Ceres, your name makes me think of the place of the same name in the Western Cape.... any connection??)
