Back to Fly school for September Fledglings

Welcome to the September 2011 Fledgling Flying thread! Hang up your microfibre cloths and park your buckets here!!

[Sorry - I've namechanged again - but remain SC]

This is where from the 1st of the month, we attempt to declutter and follow the 30-step wisdom of Flylady (minus cutesy language and a surfeit of e-mails) with lots of chat and support and mutual motivation along the way. (More info available here )

Humungous thanks to our previous thread leader Blue for navigating us all through the August school holidays...and for doing it so consistently and well!!

As usual we will be following a three-pronged approach - and don't worry - we are all at different stages. Some of us (SC stares at feet) -are even embarrassingly stuck at decluttering stage after two years Blush

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

All newcomers welcome!

messy I think people do say "lashing* but they don't tend to use it by itself, as in "it's lashing"..it will be used in a more florid melodramatic way.ie: The rain was lashing down, or Out in the lashing rain...in England.

Structural surveyor has been here for a while discussing building regs, glazng regs, and I don't think I am any wiser as to what we actually want... It's difficult, Architects tend to be too poncey, and engineers too realistic. However at least I now know what we can't have unless spending £££££ over budget and oodles of plannign permission

It's turning into a lovely peaceful drippy (not lashing tg)sort of day, children are playing in various parts of the house...ds will hopefully come home at 4.00. Maybe I need to go and intercept him at bus stop before he is tempted to wander off.
I have cleaned the basin, the kitchen, dusted ds's room and done lots of washing. Ds2 wet his bed again, just when I'd changed the sheets and duvet Angry so will make that up now

todo
our bedroom
make tasty snack for homecoming ds1
what's for dinner?

OuchPassVodka · 06/09/2011 15:51
Grin

It has been lashing it down here. All day. Made playing on the motorway system interesting but not as interesting as the wind. Bloody hell has autumn arrive with a bang Shock

Still knackered today. And down postponed Blackpool trip

List is short and sweet:
Get up done
School run done with bollocking from ds for making him late Blush
Blackpool done
Drop off stuff with various people done
Unload car done
Crawl into bed done
Send important text about to do
project work
early night.

The term lashing is used around here, in the context of its lashing down out there, always generally qualified with a down though. Love it. Also love the expression heaving it down which is also applied to rain. mizzling is another good rain word. But then as it rains a fair bit here i guess that is why we have so many ways of describing all the different types of rain GrinHmm

I had looked at the detailed cleaning lists. I must have done they are printed in my control journal. But i have no recollection of doing so. However as i am a fail at babysteps and still decluttering detailed cleaning is beyond me.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/09/2011 16:08

Lashing down here too (although we say pissing down if the DCs are out of earshot).

List is done (including Shred!), just need food and evening routine now. DCs came out of school in a very chirpy mood, phew, we have just had some pancakes and now they are arguingovertheWii playing happily in the front room.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/09/2011 16:25

A few pancakes left, sending them over to the naughty corner if anyone wants them.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 06/09/2011 16:42

Ty for the kind words last night. I just feel guilty for not really contributing anything other than my lists of stuff I haven't done...

done
No fly type stuff

MUST do to night
Bins
Book hotel for Christmas
Reading or writing with dd3
Reading with dtds
Hotspot/sort PGCE paperwork into one place

I am still exhausted. Early night but prolonged and intermittent power cuts caused very disturbed sleep with house alarm issues..need another early night...

substantiallycompromised · 06/09/2011 17:26

Lashing it down here too. A bit wild and woolly in the garden. Must go and rescue the g pigs.

Have just spent an hour supervising (surreptiously) dd doing homework. Much of it seems quite hard for an eight year old and I have no clue as to what I am supposed to be doing with system of signing, returning, and receiving again tests/homework scripts. Some are meant to go in file here at home. Some returned to school. System has changed since last year when we had work-book with the homework of the day described in it. All nice and simple . Now homework description goes under day when it is due - which is confusing - sometimes a fortnight ahead. Plus it is all in two languages of course (only one of which I understand). Oh dear ... I think I need to meet with one of her form teachers presto pronto. [woolly headed mother emoticon]

Dashing now to finish supper and get ready for tonight.

Tha' she blows and all that!

Huge waves to everyone

OuchPassVodka · 06/09/2011 17:28

thanks Whoknows

haunted it happens. I am very much like that sometimes. This thread is huge and fast moving and i struggle to retain the information about what people have been doing from amongst the lists. Pop in catch up with the odd post that sticks in your brain, shove the list in and wave at everyone else. We have all done it at times. Some more of us then others.

Am in hiding til bedtime. dsis leaves about then. she is currently occupying ds. need another early night.

rowingboat · 06/09/2011 17:54

Hi all

SC I just wanted to sympathise with the homework confusion. We have a couple of days when DS receives new work and I don't really understand which folder is the 'home' folder, one is supposed to be in the bag every day and one only on Thursday.
I have no idea if I am doing it properly. Probably right about asking the teacher, but she's a bit of a battle-axe. [scared face]

Swan I expect your DS2 is marking his territory. He must sense the new sheets don't have his 'scent'. My son almost always used to pee on new sheets - grrr!

Still to do
new load in machine done
pharmacy - think I have ringworm I hate that pharmacist, but he has sold me some anti-fungal cream to try???
wash floor bathroom done
wash floor kitchen done
water house plants done
water tomotoes done
washing in done
read babysteps 4-6 (focussing on hotspots - top tip SC)
buy new washing line (old one keeps snapping) done
get paint colour thingy from B&Q done - several
get new school tie for DS - this is going to trickier than I thought
Dinner???????? done - pathetic effort - poached eggs and sausages! MMm! I bet you are all wishing you could come to my house for dinner. Grin
Went out with DS to get photos of the docks for his school photo and it is spectacularly windy and blustery.

Rain I would say 'chucking it down' and pissing after DS has gone to bed.

Dyson opinions??? Any?

HauntedLittleLunatic · 06/09/2011 17:56

Oh and dyson crap....only good thing is that it gets repaired every time it breaks for first 5yrs.

Fuzzled · 06/09/2011 18:13

Dropping by on phone while hiding in loo as DS is driving me crackers.

Dyson's were brilliant previously, but in the last few years (4-5 iirc) they outsourced the manufacture to another continent, which has coincided with what appears to be cheaper plastics and shoddier workmanship.

Mine (10 yo) is wonderful as is my Dad's (15 yo?) and has never broken - needed a new hose as plastic perished after a water/foam incident, but that's it.

Friend got one 3 years ago as it's broken about 10 times. Hmm

So good reputation, but based on older models I think.

rowingboat · 06/09/2011 18:15

Haunted have you got a Dyson? I am disappointed in the suction, compared with my old vacuum.
Sigh!
OK babysteps 4 and 5 are about writing down stuff, especially voices in your head. Hmm! That's for people who haven't got around to reading them yet - kind of a crib sheet.
Have to choose some hotspots now.
I used to have two, but one is actually pretty good now - it was by the front door, but it seems to be a reformed character and now stays quite tidy.

How many hotspots do you experienced Flying people have?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/09/2011 18:27

Sorry, never had a Dyson, in fact never gad an upright, Miele cylinder for me.

Rowingboat poached eggs and sausages sounds yum! Unfortunately DS likes neither, which is a pain. The DCs have had pizza tonight, DH and I are having bacon and egg butties in front of the TV later.

Swan - my DS rarely wets the bed at home (maybe twice a year) but is pretty well guaranteed to on holiday, we never travel without Pampers bedmats. Actually that's not true, we always arrive and realise we've forgotten them and have to buy a new packet, so we've got sackloads of them upstairs. I don't know if it is an unfamiliar territory thing, or if he gets more tired / sleeps more deeply on holiday. Touch wood he's never done it in his sleeping bag while camping, that really would be a pain.

Haunted hope you get more sleep tonight. Also, there are quite a few people on here who have been on the thread for 18 months to two years, so we are more likely to chat and remember what's going on. I really hope it doesn't seem clicquey, I don't think so? Just join in when you feel like it anyway.

Feet - what's white lemonade then?

HauntedLittleLunatic · 06/09/2011 18:35

I have got a dyson (the mini ball one...DC24?) but have recently relegated it to the garage in favour of a henry. Henry miles more suction.

I don't think it is necessarily cliquey. I just worry that I am/will be taking but not giving IYSWIM.

rowingboat · 06/09/2011 19:02

Whoknows thanks for explaining about the timescales, it would be a lot easier to keep up if I could remember all the names and families and pets and aaaargh!

Haunted I'm probably going to stick with the Dyson for now, just because it is the easiest vacuum I have had to push, it is so light. I hate the stupid metal pole which is supposed to be a tool.
Next task is to find a carpet shampooer, mine is dead! Anyone tried a Vax Rapide upright?

Hotspots hmm! Probably kitchen table, it's a heap!

OuchPassVodka · 06/09/2011 19:02

One hotspot but it is rather encompassing. Blush Whole house is a hotspot atm Grin

Working on it though.

Right
Also done:
Import txt message
Caught up on emails
Panic and make decision
feel lost and resort to google
Yell at ds who will not except NO
Give ds sleep meds and shove him into bed.

Right need a list for tomo:
Up school run
check swimming kit
figure out wtf wrt ds' new kit
do a kit wash
Laundry
ironing
folding
put clothes away - including baskets of clothes not put away at weekend
School run
Ds' swimming lesson
Trial run of new kit putting on.
buy birthday cards for ds' cousins
Project work.
Early night.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/09/2011 19:15

Rowing - I was counting hotspots last week. I think there are two different sorts, the ones that attract more crap the minute they are cleared (the majority of them) and the warmspots which maybe last a week or so and then they're full of it again. I reckon in total there are about 25 in my small 3 bedroom house Sad.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 06/09/2011 19:46

I'm not going to embarress myself by counting hotspots:....suffice to say that there is at least one in every room...

coostoonettle · 06/09/2011 19:59

Good evening

well what a day! Dohball turkey dohball. Indeed. Now have to take ds to work with me. Here hoping noone wants to look at caravans in the rain tomorrow as i dont fancy dragging him round too.

Not keen on dyson here either, although im on my second. dmil bought me one as a wedding present but ive never been impressed and concur one of the best things is 5 year repairs.

Im going to apologise for lack of personals and go to bed. DD keeps interrupting me and i can tell im in for a distrubed night.

Hope you all have a great night and day tomorrow.

PositiveAttitude · 06/09/2011 20:11

Marking my spot for the morning. Ignore me til tomorrow, or I will feel guilty!!

Back to normal routine tomorrow morning. Will try and post in the morning before I head off for work. Cant promise catching up on the 319 posts so far on this thread, so will you let me jump in from here and start again?

Lovely holidays. Rubbish weather today for a last day, down hill til Christmas now!!

Hope you have all been behaving in my absence!! Massive waves to one and all!! Grin

Off to enjoy a last night of family relaxing without school routines. See you all tomorrow.

Makingchanges · 06/09/2011 20:47

Evening all

Sorry i have been awol again, madness here and been unwell again. Apparently have a uti and its just wiped me out.

rowingboat my new hoover that i'm loving is a dyson (dc24?) love it much better tham previous phillips big heavy monster thing (but i've only had it a few weeks so no expert)

sc enjoy your night out

Whoever was on about lashing, as well as rain how about something like 'lashings of custard'

Not much flying done today, spent most of time preparing for an interview i have next week. Managed to book 3 visits to schools for thurs / fri, 2x washing and hoover throught downstairs.

Found out today that i am yeast intolerant. This explains why i am always ill but covers most of my diet (and i am a total bread addict) don't know what i can/cant eat and feeling a little lost about it

Anyway off to catch up

Makingchanges · 06/09/2011 20:51

nettie i bet ds was pleased about extra days off school. Tomorrow at work with u will be an adventure for him.

Can hotspots be entire rooms Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/09/2011 21:05

MC - one of my friends is yeast intolerant, she eats a lot of rice, and soda bread is fine (also very yummy). She can't eat mushrooms either. I am not yeast or anything else intolerant, but am trying to replace most of my bread intake with Ryvita, mainly to lose weight, but I also find it fills me up for longer and it is very tasty. I don't seem to be getting so many carb cravings now as I used to, which can only be good.

BlueEyeshadow · 06/09/2011 21:06

We have the mini ball Dyson too, and I really like how lightweight it is, and the suction is miles better than our previous "hoover" - an ancient upright Panasonic. I do worry about how plasticky the hose feels though.

Anyway, have crossed off all my list except wrap presents and blow up balloons. Currently hanging about waiting for an ebay auction to end in 10 mins or so, then need to get back to it, and tidy up the sitting room and dining rooms a bit ready for the party. I can't believe my baby is nearly 2!

HauntedLittleLunatic · 06/09/2011 21:42

substantiallycompromised · 06/09/2011 22:19

Evening all. Chucking it down. Just this minute returned from a rather bracing concert. Need to catch up with thread although am being stalked by huge daddy-long-legs who seems to be attracted to desk lamp ...

Baby-step no 7 for Wednesday 7th September is here

It?s a helpful one about laying out clothes. (Although your laundry does have to be up-to-date to benefit from this one.)

Tomorrow we are still in Zone 2: The Kitchen (September 5 - 9) here

Wednesday?s mission will appear here once the website updates itself

But for a sneak-peak ahead at this week?s missions, look here Again, may need to update.

Wednesday is anti-procrastination day in Fat Fairy land.
