Calling all hoarders out there......why?

muriel76 · 10/08/2011 17:10

My DH is a bit of a hoarder. Some of his family are the same but particularly his mum, she seems to keep everything. They both like to also display pointless things ie books that will never be/never have been read etc.

Don't get me wrong, it is not a big deal or anything but I do want to understand why. It's hard to understand as my mum is the complete opposite and I am the same. DH and I have agreed to give the house (another!) big clear out and it would help me to hear a hoarder's view!

(Obviously I have talked with him about it many times BTW, I am just looking for other people's more neutral insights)

Thanks for any replies.

Ooo cleverything i couldnt sell my Liberty bits! It would be like selling a child!
But i do like the idea of etsy, have already registered, but not gone further than that yet. Etsy people are so cool! Very alternative and arty, really inspirational. You have to be hardnosed to sell something you've made. But i guess you set out to make something to sell, so its different.

Solo · 22/08/2011 23:41

Noooo...I definitely can't get rid of the dresses.

The high chair has a special key that comes with it and I will find it before passing it on as it is necessary to keep it safe. It's the least of my worries :)

Poshbag Shock are you Ok? I think you should stay in bed for a few days...stay safe....

Poshbaggirl · 23/08/2011 08:31

Thanks Solo, i need to stay in bed, but got an excited '11 yrs on thursday' DD who is getting a hamster today!
Another little victory of hoarding.....i had all the hamster kit from when DD1 had a hamster 11 yrs ago! AND found it! Hurrah.

moonbells · 23/08/2011 08:44

For me it's memories. I have trouble remembering things without a 'jog' and just the sight of something like a ticket from university will bring back a whole concert as if it were yesterday. Losing my saved things would mean I'd have to live in the present and lose the past. It's the reason I've taken thousands of photos over the years, too.

It's a bit like my memory files things well, then won't let me access the files without a password.

Solo · 23/08/2011 09:58

Well, they've gone :( I have a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes and I feel like my heart is breaking, but they've gone. This is worse than the baby outfit tbh. I really hope they aren't going to sell them.
And the drivel that came out of my mouth too! Hmm

Solo · 23/08/2011 10:19

I feel sick :(

Babieseverywhere · 23/08/2011 12:25

I have been lurking on this thread. I feel very inspired by how posters are clearing out their houses and I want to join in. Certainly look enough to tackle my spare room aka the dumping ground. !

Over the last few months I have thrown a lot of children's clothes but honestly, stuffed a lot in the attic too and I worry that I kept far more than I should of. I am going to get DH to drag it down next weekend and this time anything I don't completely love and is in excellent condition will be thrown.

I did the kitchen cupboards two months ago and threw a lot of glass, plastic things I didn't use and whilst it was hard...I didn't miss a thing so I chucked the right stuff. Which is a big concern for me, that if I chuck something I will miss it and can't replace it :(

The living room is meh, OK. Covered in toys. Some clean clutter on surfaces and one massive box of paperbox I need to deal with. I like the suggestion to photograph the bills and the paper can be binned. I also decluttered the hall and cupboards recently so that area is OK. Just one cuboard to attack in the bathroom.

The kids room is lovely, clean and tidy. But I work on that regularly I want to get all rooms in the house like that one.

Our room is clean clothes central, I need to throw out all the too small/too large clothes and just keep the half a dozen items which fit me and worry about what size I will be in the future in the future. So our bedroom will be a future task. Loads of stuff under the bed. But organised and neatly packed in suitcases etc. So won't too long once I get around to it. I hope.

But oh lordy, the spare room is going to be a challenge.

  1. It has a double bed which DH sometimes uses, so made up with sheets etc
  2. Two small beds (got a new bunkbed at the weekend) with mattresses, just stacked on others things.
  3. Three 8 foot high bookshelves, crammed with many many books, including 50 teenage annuals Blush
  4. Deflated water pool (from three failed home birth attempts) and all other stuff, pump etc.
  5. A massive solid oak coffee table with mechanism to allow the top to lift and lock at a proper eating height. Used in our last house as we had no dining room.
  6. Air purifier unit
  7. 4 massive crates of craft stuff and various loose stuff which need rationalizing
  8. Nursing chair and stool
  9. Two stair gates and extension panels
10. A full size running machine. 11. Loads of computer bits aka DH's treasure and DIY bits screws, hammers 12. 5 bags of clothes some of which were meant to be in the attic and most of got pushed out of the way. 13. I assume some rubbish, not much mind just odd bit of paper so far.

After reading this thread this morning. I bravely started clearing out. I can now get 3 metres into the room and I am fairly sure what I can get rid of. So I need to keep chipping away at it.

I aim to move DD1 and DS and maybe DD2 in a few months into this room so it needs dealing with.

I am going to move 1. into box room where the children sleep atm. Sell 2, 5, 6,10. 4 we'll keep as a paddling pool for summer. 8 going to DSis. 9's need putting up again for DD2. 12 needs sorting with stuff in attic and 99% needs throwing.

As for 3. I am also going to try and sell my collection of annuals and some of my beloved books but now I have a kindle I don't read the paper books anymore, there is no need to keep them. I am just don't know if I will EVER be ready to get rid of my books.

Craft stuff (7) I have decided to give myself the small white children's wardrobe (they have a new one coming) and I going to limit myself to keeping what fits into it.

Like pp mentioned I have a lot of memory stuff, things I want to keep but I'll get my mother around to help me chuck that stuff. She lives in a perfectly minimal home and is excellent at getting rid of things.

Off to look up how to sell things on ebay. :)

nickelbabe · 23/08/2011 13:48

poshbag - hope you mend soon

solo - it's okay, you've done really well. I hope they don't want to sell them either - they'll be very useful to someone who needs them :)

nickelbabe · 23/08/2011 13:52

talking of clearing kitchen cupboards - I worked at Burger King when i was at uni, and I collected the plastic cups from Disney films. I only got 3 of them, in the end, and I'd kept them al those years in the little boxes.
When I moved in with DH, I though "why do i keep these in a box and not want to use them? they've not got any sentimental value" so I got them out and threw the boxes (ow!) and now DH and I use them for drinking out of all the time. they're the most ueful glasses we have. and oh! will they be useful when we've got toddlers!

nickelbabe · 23/08/2011 13:55

babieseverywhere - where do you live?
i'd love a birth pool Wink
(well, they're expensive and i want a HB but i'm not sure i can stretch to a pool)

Poshbaggirl · 23/08/2011 16:16

Babieseverywhere · 23/08/2011 16:36

Congratulations Nickelbabe :)

Sorry I am the far side of the country and up north away from you, plus we use the pool a lot to play/splash in with the children Blush.

Try Ebay you can get an excellent deals on inflatable birth pools.

nickelbabe · 23/08/2011 17:12

it was worth a try! :)

yes, i'm struggling to work out how the dynamics are going to work - am due 26th november, so at the worst possible time for the shop! Blush

Lexilicious · 23/08/2011 20:38

Hi again, can't remember where I was on my last post but I have now got rid of another ebay sale - an exercise bench. It belonged to DH, was about 5 years old, and we even put on the listing that you could get a new version at Argos for about £45, but it went for £33! We don't reeeeally need the money from shedding these things but obviously it's nice to have, so I have been putting 25% or 50% of the listing for charity, sort of an appropriate charity for each thing IYSWIM. This one was for Sport Relief. It helps me sort of spread out the reasoning for decluttering - that I'm creating space for me, earning a bit of pocket money for us, rehoming things to people who need/want them, and generating a bit of income for charity too. So I can't backtrack just by saying I want to retain something more than I want the space, because then I'm denying the sale to those other beneficiaries.

Finished watching the My Hoarder Mum and Me programme last night. Really sad. I have a box of random plastic tat too. Ticket stubs. Birthday cards. Champagne corks. I know exactly where it is in my Room Of Shame and it's in my head too, burning an imprint on its sides like in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This thread is becoming really useful to keep a lot of people on the right track... wondering if anyone else agrees it would be good to have it moved to a different section so it doesn't disappear after 90 days? I think only OP can ask for this though.

Poshbaggirl · 23/08/2011 20:58

Good idea Lexi. Muriel dear girl, where you gone?

Solo · 23/08/2011 23:28

You are doing well then Lexi :) good idea about moving the thread too.

ChippingIn · 23/08/2011 23:51

Solo - Biggest Hugs x You did really well and a couple of little babies are going to love you! When you've recovered a bit you will have to tell us what you said Grin

Moonbells - I'm the same. It is just like needing the password :) But for me there's also something about holding the thing that's important too - having a photo of the ticket or whatever wouldn't work for me.

Babieseverywhere - Welcome :) You are well on your way. Just keep an eye on your Mum when she comes!!

Nickel - well planned Grin Never mind eh! Anytime is a good time when they arrive :) Still - if you decide it's too inconvenient you and FedEx the baby to me Grin

Lexi - that's a brilliant thing to do - you are really lovely :) I'm pretty sure anyone can ask to have it moved - especially a thread like this that isn't really personal to the OP. MNHQ might contact Muriel to ask her if she minds or you could PM her and ask her to ask MNHQ to move it. Good thinking though - I'd forgotten it was in chat. We'll leave you in charge of that then Grin

ChippingIn · 23/08/2011 23:52

Solo · 24/08/2011 00:03

I've just been reading another thread about hoarding/decluttering here but I haven't posted and I haven't mentioned our thread as they don't seem as sympathetic on there as we all are on here...so... Shhhhhhhh!!! and take a peek.
