What temperature do you wash your bedding?

I have been washing mine on 40° - following the care label but it seems from reading another thread that some wash theirs at 60° to get rid of germs.

Once I read that I'm worried that the germs are still there!

My washing machine only has 2 settings at 60°, one is a cotton cycle and the other is a synthetic cycle both are quite long at approx 2 hours.

How do you wash yours? :)

Same here, Worrisome! [waves]

Everything gets washed at 40, I can't remember the last time I washed at a different temperature. Even mucky baby stuff. But, well, DH, DD and I seem to be surviving with few allergies and no significant skin issues... So I'll probably just stick with what I'm doing.

Though I am tempted to put at least the towels and sheets through a 60 degree wash now every so often. Blush Though they do tend to get tumbledried, surely that kills off some stuff?

WorrisomeHeart · 29/07/2011 11:19

spireal it must be us Frolickers who are a bit mucky! Wink

HomemadeCommunistRussia · 29/07/2011 21:32

40 only wash em at 60 if they're stinky.

People worry about germs way too much IMO.

Germs are everywhere, unless your immune system is compromised don't fret about it. Grin

Feel ashamed that I do not wash the protector more that twice a year. I do wash on 60 though.

HeatherSmall · 29/07/2011 22:17

90 Shock I'd turned to 30 on the advice of Persil, will nobody think of the poor polar bears on their melting ice caps !

usualsuspect · 29/07/2011 22:19

I never wash my bedding

HeatherSmall · 29/07/2011 22:22

Now why doesn't that surprise me Grin

way2serious · 30/07/2011 15:04

Have washed my cream towels at 60 (previously only used 30) with vanish, etc this morning and have just got them off the line. I have to confess they do appear very bright and clean!!

BertieBotts · 30/07/2011 15:13

Don't the colours run at 60? Or do you all have plain white sheets?

I do towels, tea towels, dishcloths, muslins (use as changing mat) and washable sanitary towels at 60 but had never thought of doing bedding that high. Most things get done at 40 or 30. More likely 40 as DS gets food all down himself most days.

vividgingerchilli · 30/07/2011 15:15

30 or 40 unless a child has been sick, in which case 90. Towels and sheets periodically at 60 or 90.

upahill · 30/07/2011 15:21

60 on a Sunday
40 on A Tuesday and Thursday

Hello my daughter is 24 but recently her underwear has been stained badly by discharge.I usually wash everything on a cold wash.which usually is OK on quite a few things. But it won't clean her underwear or stained collars on work shirts.😯I also use cold wash cause I have a key meter so didn't want it to take all the money on there otherwise it gets really expensive.does anyone have any answers for me please.what temp to wash heavily soiled clothes on but is also money saving.thanks in advance 😊

e1y1 · 07/02/2017 14:08

60 or 95 degrees - same as underwear, towels, kitchen cloths and pot towels. Only actual clothing is washed at 40, everything else 60+

dottydee3 · 07/02/2017 14:20

40 normal detergent kills the bugs

0nline · 07/02/2017 14:29

40°C
Although I doubt it actually gets that high in the winter.

I spray bedding, especially pillow cases with that (see pic) universal de-greaser style cleaner fist and let that soak in for an hour before I actually turn the macnhine on. I think I mainly do it cos since I got pregnant I have been somewhat addicted to the smell of it. The "bump" is now 16, but I still come over all happy and madly sniffing when the bottle comes out.

Tanya why have you resurrected a thread from 2011 to mention your daughter's knickers ??????

Tanya51 · 07/02/2017 14:40

I've only just joined actually.it says post a question.so I did hoping someone would have a helpful answer.hope this answers your question

Rainatnight · 07/02/2017 14:43

Wow, I'm asthmatic and thought I was quite dust aware, but didn't know that washing at 60 kills dust mites.

What do you do if you have embroidery or anything on your duvet cover that means it's only supposed to be washed at 40. Risk it? Or just not buy those bedclothes? Grin

Rainatnight · 07/02/2017 14:44

Oh sorry, didn't realise it was such an old thread

Tanya51 · 07/02/2017 14:46

I've just joined actually didn't even know about this site in 2011.I beleave I'm allowed to ask any question hoping for a helpful answers.😊

Monkeybunkey · 09/02/2017 14:08

60 with bio washing powder and a capful of Zoflora in the fabric conditioner drawer. My machine has a 60-minute quick wash at 60 degrees. Then they're tumble dried (line dried in the summer).

JayneW63 · 09/02/2017 14:41

Went green detergent wise, use ENJO revolution, and uped the temperature I use to 60. It's a balancing act between energy use and what ends up out there in the water.

Funnyonion17 · 09/02/2017 21:13

I have white cotton, wash at 90

Missanneshirley · 09/02/2017 21:18

My machine's highest temp seems to be 60?

dementedpixie · 10/02/2017 11:26

You're supposed to ask a new question on a new thread rather than dredge up a zombie thread from 2011 though!
