What temperature do you wash your bedding?

I have been washing mine on 40° - following the care label but it seems from reading another thread that some wash theirs at 60° to get rid of germs.

Once I read that I'm worried that the germs are still there!

My washing machine only has 2 settings at 60°, one is a cotton cycle and the other is a synthetic cycle both are quite long at approx 2 hours.

How do you wash yours? :)

40 when I use the dryer (in the winter), 60 when I linedry.
mainly because dh is prone to athletes foot and I don't want to contaminate the rest of the house.

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 19/07/2011 09:21

60 due to dust allergies.

Also do towels at 60, but wash clothes at 30.

LoveInAColdChamberOfSecrets · 20/07/2011 06:35

Bedding and towels at 60, occasional 90 degree towel wash on the rare occasions there aren't any e cloths in the load, clothes at 40, monthly empty 90 degree wash to keep the machine clean.

mathanxiety · 20/07/2011 06:53

Hot wash for bedding and then hot dryer too.

Bunbaker · 20/07/2011 07:02

I wash bedding at 60 degrees due to allergies - my washer doesn't wash any hotter than that. I also do towels at 60 degrees. Dark washes go on at 30 degrees and everything else at 40 degrees.

valiumredhead · 21/07/2011 14:22

I wash at 60 to kill off dustmites.

hazeyjane · 21/07/2011 14:24

60, because we area family of wheezers.

LawrieMarlow · 21/07/2011 14:31

Everything gets washed at 40 degrees here.

bibbitybobbityhat · 21/07/2011 14:33

Long hot wash on 60 for towels, tea towels and bedding.

Almost everything else at 40.

Dh's cotton shirts at 50.

The dc white polo shirts and all the white undies at 50.

ThingOne · 21/07/2011 14:39

60 for our bedding, as we are trying to kill the dust mites not wash them
40 for the DSs' bedding unless there is blood/poo/wee (rinsed off first, obviously!)
Usually 60 for towels as well
Pretty much everything else at 30.

QuimFabray · 21/07/2011 14:41

Towels and bedding at no less than 60.

My white cotton bedding at 90, then hung up on the line - really clean and crisp :)

Lazydaisy55 · 23/07/2011 01:36

I wash towels at 60 economy setting, with powder only. I wash bedding at the same setting but with fabric conditioner.

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 23/07/2011 01:54

50 degrees, sometimes 60. I have a washing machine that allows me to set the temp, as I don't like washing my underwear at 60 (trashes the elastic) but 40 isn't enough. So I made certain that the new washing machine I bought was able to do 50 deg. the bonus is, it can also do cold, 30, 70 and 80 deg washes (as well as the standard 40, 60 and 90deg) which means DS's nappies get done at 70deg (shorter wash than at 60 and more economical than 90)

I would hate not having the 50 deg option again.

allthefires · 25/07/2011 21:01

Those of you who wash your towels at 60 or 90 - what colour are they? Worried my coloured ones would run into each other.

CeliaFate · 25/07/2011 21:05

I do them in 2 loads - bright coloureds and whites/pale

allthefires · 25/07/2011 21:11

Thank you. Will give it a go when they are a little older as still quite new!

thenightsky · 25/07/2011 21:14

My Ikea bed linen says 60c so I stick to that.

My coloured towels get 60

My white/cream towels get 95.

My machine has nothing inbetween 60 and 95 though

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/07/2011 21:22

Everything washed at 40 apart from towels at 60 (used to do nappy wash at 60). No allergies in this house tho...

way2serious · 28/07/2011 20:25

Am now panicing (sp?) as I wash everything at 30. I do often add Vanish as well but now feel very unclean. Will be stripping the beds and mattress covers and giving them all a boil wash tomorrow!!

TheMonster · 28/07/2011 20:25
basingstoke · 28/07/2011 20:29

60

mollymole · 28/07/2011 20:30

bedding washed today at 90, line dried and it is bloody lovely
i wash bedding. towels, teatowels and dish cloths on a very hot wash - i want to kill germs and mites not give them a bubble bath

allmyfriendsaremarried · 28/07/2011 20:34

Everything at 40. I see no need for doing it higher. I also have bad asthma and allergies but since I've moved to my new place it has got better and that has nothing to do with washing at a high temp. TBH a few bugs do you good. I can remember as a child helping out in a riding school getting fish and chips for lunch and never washing our hands before eating them (about 15+ years ago) and we never got Ecoli. So washing at a more evironmentally suitable temperature as our washing products have advanced so much that we don't need to boil everything is for me.

way2serious · 29/07/2011 10:00

have got the towels on at 60 - usually only do them at 30!! Also added lots of detergent and vanish as well. This should get rid of all those bugs!

WorrisomeHeart · 29/07/2011 10:12

Argh, am also feeling rather dingy as I wash everything at 40. I do put napisan in with DS's stuff as it's likely to have puke etc on (hes 9 mths) God I don't separate anymore either as I just chuck DS dirty stuff straight in the machine so it gets washed whenever the machine gets run.... Am thinking I need to overhaul my laundry procedures!
