I've used Nippon bait traps with good effect. They have poison that the ants carry back to the nest so that in theory you kill the whole nest rather than just individual ants. The downside is that it takes the best part of a week to work. Also, you are not meant to use the traps near small children. Ants tend to be worse at night so we try and put the traps out after DS2 is in bed and remove them in the morning.

Please, please make sure all the powder is completely clear before you let you children anywhere near that room.

I don't want to scare you but a nurse friend of mine saw a little boy die because he had put his finger in ant powder and licked it. Just a tiny amount killed him - it is dangerous stuff.

Doff ant powder

The powder is toxic and isn't meant to be washed into the drains as I recall. Be careful using it around children and pets.

The bait traps work. My mum used to swear that curry powder did the trick - sprinkled where they were coming in to the house. Confused
