DD has spilt pint of milk on the carpet

I've soaked up as much as poss with kitchen roll and covered the area with salt. What next? Any tips? What's best to use to stop it smelling?

sprinkle with biologigal washing powder or bicarb.
let dry and hoover off.

Washing up liquid and rub with a jay cloth then soak up as much as poss. Leave to dry. We spilt a 4 pinter and did this,no smell.
