Brabantia Bins - why are they so expensive and are they worth it?

Bought a new kitchen bin the other day. Couldn't really justify an expensive one and wondered why they are so expensive but now the one we bought has broken (it was a push lid one). So wondered whether we should have spent more and bought a Brabantia? But I resent having to spend that amount of money on something you put the rubbish in. Are they really worth it or are you just paying for a 'designer name' (for a bin?!)

I think they are more solid?
I have a brabntia washing line and ironing board ant have had them for years with no problems,
I bought a SimpleHuman bin on offer in Asda recently they are normally the same price as Brabanti and it is really good.

wideratthehips · 08/10/2010 17:11

i have a brabantia bin (10 years old) and ironing board(12 years old) and they are both still like new. very sturdy in both cases and don't look like giving up any time soon

Aitch · 08/10/2010 17:13

they have a ten year guarantee, our lid broke (er, my fault) and i called them and a whole new lid arrived two days later.

ib · 08/10/2010 17:15

They are worth it. Every other bin I have bought has become hideous and had to be replaced really quickly. I probably spent the same as on a brabantia on the various ones I had before I gave up and bought a brabantia.

dexter73 · 08/10/2010 17:25

I can't remember how old my Brabantia bin is but it is over 10 years old. I have had to replace the catch on the lid and ordered the bit from Brabantia for about £2. Definitely worth the extra money.

Decorhate · 08/10/2010 17:32

I have a small one in the bathroom which I've had for over 15 years. Def better quality I reckon - it's stainless steel & I've had cheaper versions which have rusted v quickly whereas the Brabantia hasn't....

SingingTunelessly · 08/10/2010 17:35

Was just trying to think how old our Brabantia bin is and honestly can't remember. Must be years old. Still as good as new though.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/10/2010 17:36

Yes they are worth it.

The only bin which has survived the kids riding on it Hmm

MaMoTTaT · 08/10/2010 17:37

oh yes definitely worth it - I only got mine at the start of last year, but (when clean) it's just like new.

Love it!

Bonsoir · 08/10/2010 17:37

Yes, they are worth it.

And if you polish them from time to time with steel polish, they come up like new!

Scuttlebutter · 08/10/2010 17:38

We've got one and I remember getting it vividly as it was the first big row me and DH ever had shortly after we married 13 years ago. I wanted it and he thought it was too expensive. Anyway, we eventually bought it and 13 years, many house moves, and marauding greyhounds later have left it looking immacualate, new and shiny. Def one of those "you get what you pay for" things. I would wholeheartedly recommend it. Also it is v easy to clean.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/10/2010 17:39

I polish mine with baby oil.

letsblowthistacostand · 08/10/2010 22:09

One of my main pet peeves about the UK. NO THEY ARE NOT WORTH IT. AND you then have to buy expensive brabantia liners because regular ones don't fit in their very very stylish and unique shapes.

But there is nothing else, so you will have to buy a brabantia bin or a string of cheap ones that break.

ZZMum · 08/10/2010 22:15

I have a brabantia and use bog standard bin bags in it - the regular ones do fit and the fab design means you get no ugly bin bag overhang...

Was bought my bin my in laws for a xmas present 5 years ago - totally unimpressed at the time but bin is still here where as I can not remember or find any other present they bought me!

Stinkyfeet · 08/10/2010 22:20

Best bin we've ever had. Also the bags - not brabantia ones, but Tesco ones specially made for that size/style of bin - best bags. They fit perfectly and never split when lifting out.

Piffle · 08/10/2010 22:21

Asda do a great liner for my 30L brabantia bin
We are on our 3 rd lid and 3 rd redesign but all dine for free so yes worth it

emsyj · 08/10/2010 22:41

Actually I LOATHE our Brabantia bin. You have to buy the correct bags otherwise the rubbish goes everywhere. The one we had was really tall but quite thin so you had to empty it every five minutes. We got fed up with it and put it in the garage and got a cheap Addis plastic swing bin and our lives improved overnight!

Perhaps we just chose the wrong shape/size though. There's nothing wrong with the bin itself - it's pretty sturdy. Just annoying! We also have a Brabantia ironing board and that is sturdy as hell and will probably outlive us all.

Aitch · 08/10/2010 22:42

i think the 30l is better than the bigger one, you can use normal bin bags and tuck them into the liner bucket easily. seems like the bigger ones don't have the internal bucket, is that right?

emsyj · 08/10/2010 22:52

Ours is a 20L I think and that internal bucket thing nearly drove me mad!!!! That's the worst feature of Brabantias IMO.

dexter73 · 08/10/2010 22:57

I have a 50l and buy white sainsburys bags for 50l bins and you can't see them. Just as good as the Brabantia bags and a fraction of the price.

dexter73 · 08/10/2010 22:58

I don't have an internal bucket.

Aitch · 08/10/2010 23:31

lol emsyj, i do think anyone who can't work out how to get a normal bin bag over that bucket must be a bit... dim distracted. seriously, how hard is it to put a bag over, hold it tight with one hand and chuck the whole thing into the bin? Grin

MaMoTTaT · 09/10/2010 07:20

I have the 50l and I just buy the black bin bags Confused

I have to confess when I was faced with a 30l one not too long ago I did struggle to get the bag in Blush

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 09/10/2010 07:25

Like Sixty we bought a simplehuman (but from B&Q) the price is somewhere between £ & OMFG! and it has lasted us well and (when clean) looks like new.

baby oil?????

Tootlesmummy · 09/10/2010 07:29

I bought bags (50l) from Homebase on offer and they weren't that much more than black sacks. You also know that they won't split when they're full unlike other bags.

My bin is only a couple of years old but still looks as good as new. Worth the money.
I've also got breadbin, tea coffee and sugar canisters so maybe I'm biased.
